.yn nglzrinlfing Mir!! joreign Hickman boasts one of the finest language departments in the state. It is one of the few high schools which offers three years of Latin to its students. There are nine instructors in the language depart- mentg Mrs. McTurnan, Mr. Stawski, Mrs. Delmez, Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Holmes, Miss Ingrum, Mrs. Boeger, Miss Hawkins, and Mrs. Lanser. Foreign languages are of particular interest to many students. In addition to learning to write, read, speak and under- stand the language, the student gains a great deal of knowledge pertaining to the customs, culture and geography of the country he is studying. No foreign language is required at Hickman, but courses in this field are strongly recommended, especially to all students who are planning to enter college after graduation. These are Sophomore English, Junior English, Composi- tion.and Grammar, and Literature. Sophomore and Junior English teaches the fundamentals of composition and literature and gives aconcen- trated review of basic grammar. Three years of high school study in this field are required, and a fourth is highly recommended. Composition and Grammar is offered only to seniors and is basically a preparatory course for college work, Literature, under the instruction of Mrs. McTurnan, is both interesting and valuable. Good literature is read and discussed, and the student receives a background in this field which leads to appreciation of fine literature for the rest of his life. In Math. Purdue, Kansas University, Columbia University Sponsor: Blue Triangle National Honor Society The mathematics department at Hick- man offers six outstanding courses to its students. Algebra I, an elementary course in algebra, gives the student the necessary preparation for the more advanced courses which are offered at Hickman. Plane Geometry is the basic course in geometry. This class prepares the student for further studies of this type, such as solid geometry, and stimulates his reasoning power. Algebra H is offered for those who wish to go further in the study of numbers, and is recommended for students who wish to attend a college or university. Trigonometry and Solid Geometry are more advanced courses in mathematics, Each of these is a semester course andthey are usually taken together as one solid subject. This year a senior mathematics course was added to the curriculum, This new course offers one full credit and the con- tent of the course touches upon many advanced and college preparatory mathe- matical topics.
