Second row Pace Faurot Maxwell Craven Deuser Haley Bondurant Liming Smith Third row Fowler Sims Thornton Leyden Whitt Beary Marshall Ellis Tutt Fourth row Sutton Lee Riggs Weatherly Galllvan Tutt Hummel Durrett Flfth row Bolte Burkeholder King Taylor Martin Wyatt West Comfort Not pictured Mlll1IOH Douglas The purpose of th1s SOC1Cty 1S to recognlze those 1nd1v1duals who have been outstand1ng 1n scholar ship and serx ICC and who possess f1ne character and great leadership ab1l1ty A maximum of flfteen percent of any class may become members of the Natlonal Honor SOC1CtY The first five per cent 1S taken 1n durlng the second semester of the junlor year the next f1V6 per cent goes 1n the first semest r of their senror year the last five per cent are taken 1n the flnal semester of the senlor year To be el1g1ble for membershlp the person must be first of all 1n the upper third of h1s class Thls upper thlrd is then voted on by the present members of the National Honor SOCICIY and the school faculty The f1nal dec1s1on was made by a faculty commlttee composed of f1VC teachers and the pflnclpal This year the SOC1Cty entertalned the new members by holding teas after the two tap assemblles These teas honored the 1n1t1ates and the1r parents as well as the members and their parents The 1n1t1ates are tapped by the members of the society with a membership cert1f1cate rolled in the form of a scroll and bound by ribbons of the school colors purple and gold Upon taklng the pledge to Natlonal Honor SOC1Cty the 1n1t1ates are then prnned with a pledge r1bbon of purple and gold They are allowed to wear th1s rlbbon unt1l they buy a Natlonal Honor Soclety p1n This p1n IS gold 1n the shape of a shleld Placed on th1s shleld IS a torch and four letters S C L S The torch s1gn1f1es the ever burning light of knowledge The letters stand for the four ldeals of the SOC16ty scholarshlp character leadership and service Through the supervlslon of Miss Ruth Ingrum, faculty sponsor, the N3t1OD3l Honor Soclety has completed many worthwhile projects Among them are selling cfokes for the P TA and selllng candy durlng the lunch hour and at the basketball games and at the end of the year they had a banquet The soclety also recognrzes an outstandlng sophomore by presenting th1s 1nd1v1dual w1th a CRESSET or a school act1v1ty trcket They also sponsor an honor roll publlshed at the end of each quarter honoring students who have at least two E s and two S s 1n S0l1d subjects W1thOUl a doubt membership 1n this society IS one of the flnest honors a person may obtam t Hlckman :air ,Aan 7 ' 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 ' ' 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 ' ' 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 ' : 7 7 7 . . 9 9 9 9 ' 9 - 9 - K . - - Q ,' , . . , 1 e - e - . . . 0 Q - 7 , N I Q . . . . . . . . . 9 S ' - . . 9 9 9 ' 9 9 - 7 0 0 3 7 0 o o I . . .
