After a week of campaigning during the spring of 1953, which provided countless posters to wall- paper the halls, the topics of many discussions, and the lively cam- paign assemblyg the student body voted on our student council of- ficers for 1953-541. The new of- ficers, who were announced at the awards assembly, were entertained later at the senior banquet. The officers had many meetings dur- ing the summer to plan the coun- cil's activities. They also helped Mr. Schmitz and Mrs. Williams with a banquet which was held before school started. At this ban- quet representatives from all Hick- man activities talked together about the year's activities. During this year the officers worked very hard to make this school year the big success that Was wanted. Making it successful were: Co-President Larry West, Treasurer Rita Thornton, Vice President John Buchanan, Secre- tary Aileen Faurot, and Co-Presi- dent Larry Marshall. The first semester student coun- cil sponsored a bang-up Home- coming including a pep rally, pa- rade, and dance. With the 35505.00 Student Goifernment from Christmas card sales the Christmas Pageant and second se- mester student council activities were financed. Sales of. souvenirs and beanies to the sophomores was another project. A Visitation trip was made to Wyandotte and Shaw- nee Mission High Schools, both in Kansas City, a mock student coun- cil meeting was presented in an assembly, and a juke box W a s bought for the use of students dur- ing the noon hours.
