The juniors and sen- j, ii iors watched with pride, knowing they had chosen him to fill l the office. Sophomores looked with awe on a man who could ly fearlessly stand up and command the attention and respect of the whole student body, especially the SENIORS in the balcony. That day, although we suspect that Ray was at least the tiniest bit scared, he showed his willingness to take on the responsibility l of guiding the efforts of the student council to keep Hickman li ll marching toward the goal of a better school. Have you ever stopped to realize that Hickman's library is considered one of the best in the state of Missouri? Our librarian works on the assumption that history is being made rapidly, and therefore it is important to have as much current material as possible. This includes six daily newspapers, and sixty magazines a month, in addition to 6,ooo individual volumes. Much of the success in the smooth operation of our library depends upon the good service and cooperation of Mrs. Gibbany's eighteen assistants. Study has made these Sophs better citzfzens. The principals, the chorus, and the orchestra pitched in to make the show a success. Mr. Ellis and Mrs. Kresse were the musical directors and Mrs. Mfilliams and Miss Ingrum directed the dramatics. The Art Department under Mrs. Long, the Home Economics Department under Mrs. lfVarhurst, and the Manual Training De- partment'under Mr. Forbes worked with the Music Department to maker Sweet- hearts possible. , The plot centers around Sylvia, the adopted daughterlof Mother Goose, who becomes engaged to Prince Franz of Zilania despite her love for Lieutenant Karl. The climax reveals, however, that Sylvia is the real Princess of Zilania, and she discovers that she really loves Franz. This led him into the school vaudeville-and a carload of trouble., l 1 The trouble reached out, and, as the play danced a merry leap-frog of exuberant youthful fun, it l involved a Hollywood scout and the Rus-sian conductor of the symphony orchestra, the conductor offered a scholarship-which .lay had been working toward-and the scout offered a Hollywood audition. Dilemma. Of course, everyone offered a way out. We were over 600 strong them, and all the while our football Kewpies were on the stage getting ready to tell us what they would do to our 'finvaders from the North. The next thing we knew our pep leaders were yelling, c'EXtra, Extra, Extra, and that night we yelled until we were hoarse over that triumph. Then came hlex- ico-well . . . Remember, too, our Homecoming, hunting the Jay, crowning our queen, the downtown parade, our game with Jefferson City, after game dances, musi- cal programs, verse choir, plays, and other assemblies. Homecoming Assembly Homecoming day with the Homecoming Assembly is one of the most anticipated days of the school year. This year the setting was an autumn view, amid trees of brilliant hues. The queen's throne was taste- fully decorated in purple and gold. Homecoming,' in gold was across the purple arch. In the center was a large football with 1947. It was beneath this that our queen sat. YVelcome Grads with little Kew- pies holding purple streamers was across the back of the stage. Mfe think Mrs Long did an excellent design for our stage. The students in art classes paint and fix stage decorations and Mr. Forbes and the shop boys do the building. Many said, This was the most beautiful Homecoming stage we have seen. The program was presented by the speech depart- ment under the direction of Mrs. Mfilliams. The play was The Long Kewpie Dinner or YVho Got the Bird. ' Ted Marriott, Master of Ceremonies, introduced the plot by talking to Polly Middlebrook about a party she was giving for the football team. She was worried about the refreshments, since YVaymond, played by Randy Paulling, was the refreshment committee. It develops that he was stalking the Jeff City Jay Bird, a sickly creature played by Glenn Troelstrup. The program continued with the intro- duction and crowning of the queen by Bob Ballard, captain of the football team. Finally, after a bang the football men feasted on Jay Bird. Novelty extended throughout the entire play and the unexpected al-4 ways popped up when least expected. . Charles Sullivan, who was Master of Ceremonies, spoke at length on the topic The Best Junior Class in Missouri. Following this, James Frisbie, the junior Vice-Presi- dent, crowned Norma Branham and jim McBride as Jamboree King and Queen. The curtains were drawn and a terrific explosion was heard. When the smoke had cleared, we saw the ,Royalty and the Master of Ceremonies. He announced that a terrible thing had happened. The Juniors had been blown into oblivion by a Sophomore Saboteur and we would see them '4At the Pearly Gates. A St. Peter's court was in the middle of the stage and to the right was an elevator shaft and a registering booth. As each Junior approached via the elevator shaft, St. Peter ques- tioned them concerning their personal qualifications for Heaven. Each demonstrated their rights for admittance by a song, a skit, a dance, or bits of dialogue. To climax the act, the Devil in person, represented by Bill Rutledge, appeared to seek admission. After evidence of repentance on the part of all, St. Peter admitted all of the Juniors into Heaven. The Junior Assembly of 1948 was one that will not be forgotten for many years and it has set a goal of beauty, splendor, amusement, and wit that many Junior classes of the future will strive to attain.
