FOREWORD — With the passing of time, the echoes of our school life will grow fainter and fainter, and then die away. Gone forever will be the routine of school life, the fun we had, and the friends we made It is the hope of the 1955 Annual Staff that, as you glance through this book in the years to come, you will recapture those moments --and the echoes will begin again. ____it-____ IIEmClTIOK Mrs. Myrtle Bailey We proudly dedicate the 1955 Bluff to Mrs. Myrtle Bailey as a means of thanking her for all the things that she did to make our last year of school the happiest. We will always remember how she went out of her way to help us in everyway that she knew how. May we at this time thank her for all the wonderful things that she made possible for us throughout this year. 4 Senior Class 1954-55 Carlos H. Lannom PRINCIPAL Thomas D. Osment SUPERINTENDENT MRS. SENIORS Four years ago, the Senior Class of 1955 entered Hickman High School embarking on a new phase of our edu- cation. As we looked into the future, we only received a slight idea of what it held for us. We wondered who would advise us and give us assistance when needed. Now as we approach the end of our preliminary training, we wish to express our deepest appreciation for the wonderful guidance and training we received from the fac- ulty and from our parents during the four most wonderful years of our lives. FRESHMAN YEAR We entered our Freshman year with fifty-eight students. Helen French was our candidate for Miss. H. H. S. Her business manager was Joe Ed. Garrison. We represented two boys on the basketball team. Our class officers were: President-Pete Holcombe, Vice President-Earl Calhoun, Secretary-Treasurer-Malcolm Gohnson, our class sponsor was Mr. Alton Riddle. SOPHOMORE YEAR We entered our second year of high school with a class of forty-nine students. Being sophomores, we were still classified as children; however we ourselves felt a bit grown up. Nadine Pickett was our candidate for Miss H. H. S. Her business manager was Darrell Vowell. Nadine Pickett was also elected cheerleader and we had four boys on the ball team. Several from our class were represented on Who's Who. Our class officers were; President- Bill Oliver. Vice President-Shorty Hammock, Secretary and Treasurer-Peggy Jo King. Our class sponsor was Mrs. Martha Hale. JUNIOR YEAR As Juniors, with a class of forty-seven students, we enjoyed our most prosperous year thus far. It was our duty to earn money to carry the Seniors on a trip. Without the help of our sponsor, Mr. Rust, and the wonderful co- operation we received from Mr. Franklin Jones and Mrs. Earl Pride we could have never achieved our goal. Our reward for all the hard work was a wonderful week in New Orleans, Louisiana and Gulfport, Mississippi. We won the Miss H. H. S. contest for our candidate, Anna Merle Hornsby and her business manager, Johnnie Boyles. We represented one cheerleader, Lachon Garner, and five boys on the basketball team. Nadine Pickett was chosen basketball queen. One member of our class was selected Favorite and several were represented in the Who’s Who. We presented a play No Boys Allowed, ” which proved to be a big success, with the help of Mr. Jones and Mrs. Earl Pride. We sponsored a May Festival with our candidate, Carolyn Barnett. We also sponsored a Negro Minstrel with the help of Mr. Jones. Mrs. Earl Pride and Mrs. White. Our class officers were: President-Darrell Vowell, Vice-President-Anna Merle Hornsby, Secretary-Kathryn Tipton, Treasurer-Shirley Samuels. SENIOR YEAR We entered our last year of high school with forty-six students one of the largest classes thus far to have ever graduated from Hickman High. We wish to thank Mr. Ozment, Mrs. Myrtle Bailey and all other teachers who helped guide us through this year and who helped us publish, what we consider, a very successful annual. We won the Miss H. H. S. contest for our candidate, Peggy Jo King, and her business manager, Earl Calhoun. Nadine Pickett was elected cheerleader and we had five boys on the ball team. We had several members from our class selected in Who's Who and six were chosen as Favorites. Our class officers were . Peggie Ann Wilkerson 37 When I boarded the plane in New York for Hickman, I was filled with excit- ment with the thought of going back at last to my home town which I hadn't seen now in eight years. From the bits of news I've had in the past years, Hickman has grown quite a lot since I graduated from the old Alma Mater in 1955. Well we'll see: I had just reached my seat when the stewardess came through. She was none other than Ann Cox. She stopped to say hello and she told me she really enjoyed her work. She meets so many interesting people. She told me she had a letter from Kay Eason and she is now head nurse at the hospital in Hickman, where Shirley Samuels is making a name as a very successful doctor. I arrived in Hickman at 10: 15. Well, it doesn't look like my friend, Mrs. Parker, she was Peggie Wilkerson back in school days, has arrived yet. I sup- pose her twins are keeping her busy. I sat down to wait for a cab when in walked Vernon Oliver, an old classmate. He told me he now drives the bus between Hickman and Chicago, a new route just recently put on by Greyhound Lines. He also said that Swayne Ayers, now a famous artist, is in New York doing well, and that Helen French is secretary to American Airlines. Well, that's what she always wanted to be. Right then a Bradley Cab drove up so I said good-bye to Vernon and went my way. The driver was none other than an old friend, Gerald. He now has three cabs of his own. We began talking about old friends and he said Peggy King is now a big star living in Hollywood. She's starring tonight at the new Ritz Theater just recently built by Earl Calhoun. Kathrynn Tipton is a well-known popular singer now engaged at Stork Club owned by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hammock. Mrs. Hammock is the former Betty Wright. He said Dale Pats is assistant coach to the Hickman Wildcats who haven't lost a game this season. When we arrived at Peggy's, I found that it was company and not the twins that had detained her. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Henderson and their three children were visiting from Texas. Mrs. Henderson was Miss Carolynn Barnett. Carolynn said she is working as a beautician in Texas. After our helloes were said we settled in the living room to catch up on the news. There I learned Mrs. Harold Ross otherwise, Nadine Pickett, is acting as personal secretary to her husband, now coach at U. K. Gene Cagle was expressed as another Liberace. Delores Ross is teaching sixth-grade at Hickman Elementary. She's been teaching now for six years. Dora Dean Callison is working as a stenographer but not for long, she's engaged to her boss with a June wedding planned. Shirley Jackson is happily married and living on a farm in eastern Ken- tucky where she and her husband raise some of the finest race horses ever known. Then Peggy said she had made reservations at the Stork Club for dinner and when we arrived there it so happened our table was next to that of three 38 former classmates. Roena and Dale Chaney and their guest Mrs. Billye Joe Newton. Mrs. Newton was formerly Mary Gene Wiley. Roena is working as secretary at Rice Auto Insurance Company owned by Fred Rice. Dale has his own cleaning shop and Mary Gene is working in the new department store down town as dress stylist. Jan Sargent is modeling there. During dinner it was announced that Miss Tipton would have an accompanist tonight, Mr. James Hclcombe lastest baritone rage in the country. The next day I decided to go down town shopping. On the way I met Joe Ed. Garrison. I noticed he was wearing a badge and when I got closer I could see it said Sheriff of Fulton County. I stopped to chat a moment and he told me his sister, Ruth Anne Garrison was assistant manager of the new Ritze Theater. I made comment on the many improvements in Hickman and he told me a new mayor was all Hickman needed for that. By the way he's none other than David Lawson. I said good-bye to Joe Ed. and continued walking down the street. The first thing I came to was Bill Oliver's Billiard Hall. Well Like father, Like son they always say. Then I noticed a big sign that read Cochrum and McMullins' Buick Motor Co. so I crossed the street and sure enough there were James Calvin and Jimmie Dale looking happy as can be. Just made a big sale to Mrs. Albert Markham formerly Billye Jeanne Phipps. They have recently built a new $40,000 home in Tiptonville. While I was looking over the stock I asked about some of my former class- mates that I hadn't heard about. Peggy Castleman Hamblen is still living here and her family numbers 5. Joyce Callison is working as secretary to the General Motors Company in Detroit, Michigan. Mildred Johnson is living in Memphis now. She is working as a nurse in the Baptist Hospital. Anna Merle Hornsby is another one who has decided its better to leave home She is modeling at Goldsmith's in Memphis. Sarah Ann Rogers is now a world famous hair dresser in London. Wanda Pierson is the stand-in for Marilyn Monroe and doing right well in Hollywood. Melva Jo is on vacation from her job as telephone operator. She is on her way to Florida. Mrs. Bobby Jo Whetherly, the former Lachon Garner, is very happy in her surburban home in Henry Addition. I wanted to get a paper before I started home so I left, Jimmie Dale and Cal vin and headed for the Hickman Daily Reader office. I was surprised to find that Thomas Standridge is editor of this paper and he said Patricia Wiley is one of his best reporters. While we were talking, G. B. Terrett walked in I asked him what he was doing now and he answered, I'm still an old bachelor doing as littl as I can get by with. I glanced through the paper and found that Darrell Vowell is playing baseball with the Cardinals these days. In the Personal column I noticed where Miss Erma Jones takes time off from her dancing studio to be home for the summer. Erma Jones CUSS OPTIMIST Having been chosen Optimist for this Senior Class of 1954-55, I may be inclined to be a little too boastful, but we are indeed proud of our many a- chievements, and the high honors that have been bestowed upon many of our class members during our high school days. There has never been any goal too high or any project too steep that we have not completed with flying colors. We have stuck together through all difficulties and problems and worked as a class. During our Freshmen and Sophomore years, there wasn't much that was re quired of us except to attend classes and stay out of trouble. We were, in most cases, successful after we got over our greenness at being in high school. However, our Junior and Senior years have been busier and more difficult ones. Last year, we took the Seniors on a most enjoyable trip to New Orleans and Gulfport. This year, we have put out an annual that excels all, we feel. Coming to the end of this, our Senior year, we cannot help but realize that this year could not have been nearly so successful, prosperous, or pleasant without the aid, fellowship, and co-operation of our sponsor, Mrs. Myrtle Bailey. As you can see, we are, indeed, a very optimistic class. We are looking forward to great things in the future. We feel that many of our young men and women will stand out in the various fields in which they choose to enter. We hope that you will always look to us, the graduating class of 1954-55, with great pleasure and admiration. Anna Merle Hornsby CLASS PESSIMIST As pessimist of the Senior Class of 1955, I would like to tell you of a few of my likes and dislikes. (Mostly dislikes. ) First of all I don't like the idea of getting up at such an unearthy hour to be at school by 8:15. They expect me to sit up here and study myself into in- sanity until 3:15. Another thing, I don't see why the teachers don’t let us get up and leave class when we get tired instead of having passports telling what time we leave, where we go, what we do while we're gone, and what time we get back. If the teachers would only let us tell the truth and say we're just bored and would like to take a 5 or 10 minute break, but no, they make us do everything to get out with as many details as they can get. Another thing I don't like is the idea of radar in the halls where the principal can sit in his office and catch us when we go out the side door to Trusty's. Don't get me wrong now, I like progress in anything, and would like to see our school a modern one with all modern inventions, but I don't see any sense in over-doing it. A senior is universally recognized as a creature of wonderful dignity. Why won't people respect it? Why, the juniors sometimes even dare to sit down in our very presence, and even the sophomores have on one or two occasions for gotten to lift their hats. Well, I will quit talking now as I guess you people are getting as bored of hearing me talk as I am by seeing you people yawning in my face. B. Terrett, Robert Hunter, Pete Holcombe, Jerry Williams, Darrell Vowell, and Jack McKenzie. The Wildcats had won eight and lost seven up until Jan- uary 18, 1955. The Wildcats had very good backing from the crowds who followed each game on the road and at home. Un- der the coaching of Mr. Carlos Lannom, they hope to win their remaining games. The Wildcat's team of 1954-55 had one of the best balanced ball teams of any team in the past. The main five included four Seniors and one Sophomore; they were: Shorty Hammock and Bill Oliver holding down the guard positions, with Robert Hunt- er and Pete Holcombe playing as forwards and G. B. Terrett playing the pivot, with help from Darrell Vowell, Jerry Wil- liams, Phillip Grissom, Larry Lloyd, Ralph Chamberlain, Jack McKenzie, and others. --Pete Holcombe Jerry Williams Carlos Lannom Dale Pate James McMullin m David Lawson Jack McKenzie Larry Lloyd Clarence Jones Shorty Hammock G. The Kittens showed very promising during the 1954-55 basketball season with a very impressive record with 11 wins and 4 losses. They will be depended upon in the future as the Wildcats. They were led by Darrell Vowell who led the scor- ing and was a demon on the backboards, followed by the fine playing of: Jerry Williams, Jack McKenzie, Phillip Grissom, Ralph Chamberlain, Larry Lloyd, Clarence Jones, Bud Hook- er, Fredrick Pierson and others.
