CLASS HISTORY Four years ago, the Senior Class of '53 entered Hickman High School, embarking on a new phase of our education. We looked into the future with only a slight idea of what it held for us. We wondered who would help us when we need- ed advice and assistance. Now that we are approaching the end of our preliminary training and looking forward to Commencement, we can look back and recall how our many questions were answered by those who have guided us through these fruitful years. The members of our class, individually and collectively, are indebted to those persons who have helped us in achieving our goal-- Commencement in Life. FRESHMAN YEAR Our class entered its freshman year with forty-nine members. We were as green as some of the classes before us, of course, but after seeing the lower classmen in the last three years, we do not say we were the greenest class ever to grace the halls of H.H.S. Although we were new to high school life, our members quickly became a part of the pattern which people say is the happiest time of our lives. Shirley Cooley was our candidate for Miss H.H.S. Her business manager was Billy Garrison. We were even more honored when Jo Gaddie was selected as a cheerleader and Paula Horns- by was chosen as part of Who’s Who. Ruth Council was our participant in the April Fool Queen Contest. Our class officers were: President, Billy Garrison, Veep, Bobby Wright, Secretary, Harold Garrison, and Treasurer, Gerald Dunnagan. Our sponsor was Mrs. Alton Riddle. SOPHOMORE YEAR We began our second year in high school with a class of forty-six members. We were beginning to feel very bold, but we were soon quieted with Now, little sophomore, don’t be so bold. You're only a freshman one year old. We were very active our sophomore year. Our selection for Miss H.H.S. this year was Maxine Logan. Her business manager was Billy Garrison. Jo Gaddie again was selected for cheerleader and Del Rhea Roberts was elected attendant for the Basket- ball Queen. Several members of our class achieved a position in Who's Who and we made ourselves known on the bas- ketball court too. We also had one of our classmates selected for a Favorite this year. Our class officers were: President, Billy Garrison, Veep, Bobby Wright, Secretary, Paula Hornsby, and Treasurer, Ellise Dobson. Our sophomore sponsor was Mrs. Alton Riddle. JUNIOR YEAR As juniors we enjoyed our most prosperous year thus far. It was our duty to earn enough money to take the seniors on a nice trip. Without our sponsor, Mrs. James A. Mitchell, we could never have achieved this goal. The reward for our hard work was a five day trip to Lake Tanacomo, Missouri. We also won the Miss Hickman High Contest for our candi- date, Alyce Glyn Stahr, and her business manager, Harold Garrison. We were well organized in school activities this year. We furnished two cheerleaders, Del Rhea Roberts and Jo Gaddie, six ball boys, and Basketball Queen Paula Rhodes and one attendant, Paula Hornsby. We presented a play There Goes the Bride with the help of Mrs. Alton Riddle and Mrs. Ben White and surprised even ourselves with its success. We furnished part of the Favorites and Who’s Who for this year also. We began a school paper, THE JUNIOR GAZETTE, which became a successful and much needed part of our school. Our class officers for the year were: President, Billy Garrispn, Veep, Bobby Wright, Secretary, Paula Hornsby, and Treasurer, Jane Kearby. SENIOR YEAR In September thirty-three dignified seniors mounted the steps of H.H.S. We did not know exactly what positions we were to fill as upper classmen, but under the guiding hands of Mr. T. D. Ozment and our class sponsor, Miss Vivian Caldwell, we soon learned what we were to do as seniors. We selected an efficient annual staff to publish the '33 BLUFF. We were hailed as successful journalists when we once again published the school paper now called THE DIGNIFIED CHATTER. We provided several basketball boys and a cheerleader, Jo Gaddie. Our class monopolized Who's Who and Favorites. Paula Hornsby was selected Basketball Queen and Paula Rhodes was elected as an attendant. Jerry Castleman and Corrinne Sharp were crowned Mr. Miss H. H. S. in a very impressive ceremony. We gave a Negro Minstrel which was a tremen- dous success. Our class officers were: President, Billy Garrison, Veep, Bobby Wright, Secretary Paula Hornsby, and Treas- urer, Shirley Cooley. We are at the end of our high school career now and as we look back we realize that we have not prospered badly, instead we have set a goal for those who follow to strive to obtain. We would like to say thank you to each one who has helped to make our high school days what they have been. 26

CUSS POEM Our Golden Days they say are o're I say they've just begun The hoDes we have, the goals we score Shall spring from school days fun. This little class of '53 is full of fun as fun can be They sweat and fret, hoping to get their grades given free. Frank Allen says for Forfourlong years I was hoping to be free But I won't tarry. 111 probably marry, last you'll see of me. Kathryn Bradley's folly is being jolly and happy as a lark But she's no fool, she's going to school, to boss the Little Ark. George Bush claims he is a genius and perhaps he is right. He wants to be a millionaire and for all I know he might. Jerry Castleman deals in cars, or should I call them junk He'll nearly choke to find he's broke, when payday comes, he's sunk. To be a preacher is Terry Cashion's ambition Watch out Billy Graham, you've got some competition. It's Pearl Coffey's run, she's lot's of fun, in fact she is no bore Now keep this tight, but I think I'm right, she'll run the ten-cent store. Shirley Cooley, our treasurer, all our checks she'll write She’s hard to beat, she doesn't cheat, but who can tell, she might. Eldon Easterwood, just another boy without a brain But let's be fair he's always there, even if he is raising cain. Jo Gaddie for four long years has helped the school to cheer She prohably would again next year except she won't be here. Vera Lou Garner likes to study or so at least I'm told In fact on getting shorthand I'm just sure she’s sold. Billy Terrell Garrison for four years has been our president He doesn't shirk any kind of work, in fact, he's Heaven sent. Harold Garrison would rather play basketball than eat The way it seems he's for the team and strictly hard to beat. Donald Hammock, best looking boy as voted in Who's who But that's not all, in basketball, there's not much he can’t do. Paula Hornsby, liked by all, is friendly as can be She'll go far and likely star, in this world, you'll see. Richard Hunter, a studious lad. is not so bad He'll climb the ladder if the rungs aren't bad. Jane Kearby, most dignified senior, would surely like to be Like Emily Post if her manners would only agree. Ray Kemp, slightly wild, if he dosen't go insane I pity he, the end will be, he'll end up wed to Jane. Maxine Logan, prettiest girl with the Pepsodent Smile She's got lines like a Cadillac and they're always in style. Jeanette Oliver, a bashful girl, but very nice to know She's always been, everyone's friend, for you reap just what you sow. Dorothy Petty works at Claude's by being his car hop On a rainy day, inside she'll stay, hoping the cars won't stop David Roberts, known as Judge, a service station man To the girls a joy, most bashful boy, I think we understand. Del Rhea Roberts, I'm sure she'll find will miss out on all the fun When she says, I do. she’ll think she's through, but she has just begun. Paula Jean Rhodes, speed queen of the cars If she doesn’t slow down she'll end up behind bars. Alyce Glynn Stahr is pretty as can be, from near and far It might be found, she's Hollywood bound, to be a movie star. Corrine Sharp, queen of Hickman High I'm sure will hate to graduate, but she must say goodbye. Louise Kiphart joined us late A refugee from the Sunshine State. Rowland Wiseman grumbles about everything he can see He doesn't know, or doesn't show, that isn't the way to be. Yvonne Yarbrough, this years Editor of the Bluff Is. as everyone says: Brother is she rough. Leon Harris has a mania at school for being late He'll sure show, he ought to know, if he gets his diploma, it's fate. Clara McClellan last but not'least, in everyone's book Is not leaving she's taking, if it's not all took. I guess you know, at least, by this time I'm the one who set these words into immortal rhyme. It’s not so hot. I guess I'll stop, before we have to fight But before I go. I’ll let you know, call me Mr.........Bobby Wright. Bobby Wright

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the class of nineteen hundred fifty-three, do hereby make and declare this to be our last will and testament, to be read on the 22nd day of May, before the students who will remain at Hickman High School after we are gone. The will was witnessed by the president of the of the Senior Class. Alyce Stahr wills her trying to have long hair to Peggy Taylor. Corrinne Sharp wills her pidgeon-toed walk to Peggy Jo King. Richard Hunter leaves his nickname, Henry , to Paul Mansfield. Russell Hutchins leaves his great ability to David Lawson. Dorothy Petty wills her ability to stay out of trouble to Jacqueline Turner. Kathryn Bradley wills her height to the first person who needs it. Jeanette Oliver says she is just leaving. Louise Kiphart leaves her big mouth with pleasure to some bashful freshman. Ray Kemp wills his speed to Ellen Kearby. Del Rhea Roberts wills her blonde hair with which she was born with to some peroxide blonde. Yvonne Yarbrough leaves her ability to stare Mr. Mitchell down to some poor, quaking freshman. Rowland Wiseman wills his ability to get along with Mrs. Mitchell to Joe Blincoe. Clara McClellan wills her ability to pass geometry to Jan Sargent. Bobby Wright leaves his genius to the teachers hoping they will use it as wisely as he did. Shirley Cooley wills her dimples to Dolores Ross. Jane Kearby wills her ability to be dignified to Shirley Samuels. Paula June Hornsby wills her ability to get a Garrison to Nancy Hollis. Terry Neal Cashion leaves a snapshot of himself here hoping that it will keep the girls happy while he is gone. Jo Gaddie wills her ability to be cheerleader four years to Wanda James. Sue Hall leaves her 22 waist line to the two Patricias. Leon Harris wills his ability to go to school one day a week to Earl Calhoun. David Roberts leaves his place on the BLUFF staff to Joe Ed Garrison. Jerry Castleman leaves his favorite teacher, Miss Sublette, to some lucky junior. Frank Allen wills his ability to run around during school hours to Roger Harris. Harold Garrison wills all he has left behind to Rayburn Garrison. Billy Garrison wills his ability to be president four years to Don Blincoe. George Bush wills his red hair to Dale Chaney who has tried unsuccessfully all these years. Paula Jean Rhodes wills her unused shorthand book to Nadine Pickett in hopes she will have a better use for it than she did. Eldon Easterwood wills his Stevenson button to Mr. Riddle. Donald Hammock leaves his good looks to little Socket. Maxine Logan wills her Pepsodent smile to Shelly Harris. Pearl Coffey wills her height to Harold Loyd Ross.
