SARA DON HENRY 19 Class History There is an old saying--“Your high school days are your happiest days. We feel that this is so because we have had fun at old Hickman High School. As class Historian, I am to tell you of the exciting and of the dull things of our four years in high school. We entered the freshman year with 43 very “Green Freshmen enrolled. Speaking of “Green Freshman, we had all the other classes, which had gone on before us, beat. I do not think we would have made it without Mr. Laurence Jones to keep us in line and to cheer us up. Ourofficers were : President, Richard Cartwright; Vice President, Boyce Ross; Secretary and Treasurer, Martha Sue Williams; Sar- gent-at-Arms, Charles Cooper. As you know, the sophomore class has the name of “Prissy Soph- omores. Believe me, every one of us girls was walking a very straight line. Our sponsor was Miss Vivian Caldwell. We had 38 en- rolled that year. Our officers were; President, Jo Ann McCllean; Vice President, Charles Davis; Secretary and Treasurer, Peggy Tipton; Sargeant-At-Arms, Charles Cooper. Our Junior Year consisted of much work. We made money for the Junior-Senior trip. On the trip, we took the Seniors to Kentucky Lake and stayed four days. To explain what happened, and how we liked the trip, would take too long. We had four days swimming, little eating and no sleeping. Our sponsor was Mr. Leslie Roehm. We had 34 enrolled as Juniors. Our officers were: President, Jo Ann McCllean; Vice President, Billy Joe Roberts; Secretary, Holt Jones; Treasurer, Richard Wilkerson. JULIE TERRET Class Poem Now gather around you Seniors, and lend me all your ears, We won't disgrace, the human race, by talking about these years. Sammy Adams is right, and pretty bright, and as he heads the list. He's pretty mean, at seventeen, and says he's never been kissed. We wouldn't avoid, for we enjoyed, the company of James Black, He's not at all sad, he seems too glad, he won't be coming back. We all know, Kenneth Blincoe, and no one will see him grieve, For 4 long years, he's been up here, and now he's ready to leave. Now I'd quote, about Ernestine Choate, and I'm sure she'd agree. To be a teacher, and marry a preacher, is her ambition you see. To hear his voice, Bud Halterman's choice, is to be our coach he raves, Neglecting the noise, I pity the boys, they'll all be nicotine slaves. Sara Henry it's said, they call her Red , would like a job at the show, From six until ten, patronizing a friend, when to the movies they go. Gerald Jackson's clever, he'll endeavor, to marry and live on a farm, And once his wife, gets out a knife, he'll find not all of her's charm. Politics, is what Holt Jones picks, and in it he puts every cent, Leave a year, then come back here, and you'll find he's President. Here's James King, truly The Thing , there's nothing he didn't achieve, He's been so bad, the teacher's are glad, he's up here and ready to leave. Where Jo Ann McClellan, makes her dwelling, to us is still unknown, Marrying Boyce Ross, she won't be boss, for he's the head of the home. Fay Morrow's hurrying, she may be marrying, when she crosses the bridge Who I don't know, but this much is so, it's a boy from down on the ridge. A good word, for Royce Ritchie I've heard, is he's a good boy although, Being out late, from eight 'til eight, isn't exactly an angel you know. Bill Roberts rule, was stay at school, and sometimes he'd be in the gym. But what a pity, if it wasn't Union City, Woodland was calling for him. Here's Boyce Ross, who said he'd be boss, because he's much of a man.. But I'm sure his wife, will hook him for life, and his boss will be Jo Ann. Glenn Sargent I fear, was mean up here, and would stay if he could, The teacher's appeal, it cannot be real, he's actually leaving for good. Julia Terrett's deed, was one to succeed, a feat that's never unknown, But will this strife, make her a good wife, and also head of the home? Julia Terrett's deed, was one to succeed, a feat that's never unknown, But will this strife, make her a good wife, and also head of the home? About Claudy Thomas, it's not a promise, on what he plans to be. But I believe, that he'll achieve, anyway, a bachelor's degree. For better or worse, to be a nurse, is Harriet Townsend's wishing, I'm sure that she, will get a degree, by working for her ambition. Betty Watson's carreer, is written here, and surely it won't harm her, For the rest of her life, to be the wife, of a prominent Hickman farmer. No one knows, what Sue Williams chose, but we are sure her knowledge, Will help her dear, throughout the year, if she chose to enter college. Richard Wilkerson will agree, this with me, he's pulled many a caper, And we both believe, what he has achieved, could not be put on paper. John Wright will live on Bond Hill, and never again will he grieve. For he will face, his life with Grace, and happiness he will achieve. Patsy Williams it seems, will end her dreams, as she's in a hurry. And after she, gets her degree, we believe, that she will marry. By doing the best I could, and still no good, the job is only half done, The poem will show it, that I'm the poet, or at least an excuse for one 21 Richard Cartwright Class Optimist As Optimist of the Senior Class of 1952, I find that the mem- bers of our class have all been of a happy turn of mind. They have always tried to look on the bright side of life. We shall always feel that our years in school have been the happiest years of our lives. We shall always remember our teachers, and friends, and also all the wonderful times we have had. One of the outstanding achievements of the class was the taking of the Seniors of the previous year to the Kentucky Lake State Park. We were then the members of the Junior Class. Another achievement was the publishing of the “WILDCAT of 1952. Some additional achievements made by various members of the class are as follows: We have furnished cheerleaders; we have had our share of honor students; we have staged successful plays, and many of our members have made enviable records in basket ball. Our graduation is a climax to our high school years, but will only be a beginning of trials far greater than we have ever known. Before leaving we wish to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to the faculty, and especially to our Superintendent, and Sponsor for the annual, Mr. T. D. Ozment. Without his help and assistance, the publishing of our Annual would not have been possible. Now that we are graduating from Hickman High School, I, in behalf of the Senior Class of 1952, bid a fond adieu to our beloved Alma Mater. JAMES H. KING 22 Class Prophecy It is now the year 1961 and I have just finished the regular baseball season. I have been playing for the New York Yankees. We are starting our first game of the World Series this week in St. Louis. Guess who is pitching for the Cardinals — “Frog” Wilkerson. He has won 20 games for the Cards this season. I flew from New York Yesterday and met Harriett Townsend on the plane. She told me all about her big plans for becoming the top designer of the U.S. She was returning from her New York Annual Designer’s Convention. I enjoyed seeing her. We stopped in Washington for refueling; several passengers got on. We noticed a familiar face--that of Claudy Thomas. He is now the Editor of the Washington Sun Daily. The three of us had a grand time together until we parted in St. Louis. After I checked in the Statler Hotel I went to a Night Club to dine. As I walked in the head waiter approached me--it was Royce Ritchie. We talked while I ordered. Suddenly he had a big surprise for me. He brought over Betty Watson and her husband. They told me that Julia Terrett and her husband were also up for the game. It is now the big day for the big game. While I warmed up I heard familiar voices. It was three old buddies; Sam Adams, Glenn Sargent, and Ken Blincoe. They were having a grand time and said that they had just robbed a bank. I believed them. I also noticed two more excited fans; Mr. and Mrs. Boyce. Mrs Ross is the former Jo Ann McClellan. I noticed six children with them. Boyce jokingly said he was raising a family to fit his 15 chair shop. Well, it is a week later and the Yankees brought home another pennant. I started to Hickman on the bus. Martha Williams climbed aboard. She is the personal secretary of the President of the Atomic Power Plant at Paducah. As we rode along on the bus we noticed several signs stating the new “ Black Jackson planation. James and Gerald have done well. Billy Joe Roberts met me as I got off the bus in Hickman. Gee, it was good to be home. He took me down to see his new modern car business. Holt Jones was there looking over a big car. Said he was trying to buy a car to fit his large family. After our chat with Holt, “Bunyan and I decided to go see the movie. As we entered the show we met Ernestine Choate, who is now the Assist- ant Manager. In the lobby we were delighted in seeing the former Patsy Sue Williams, whose husband is one of uncle sam’s boys. With her was the former Faydell Morrow. Her husband owns the largest gold mine in Alaska. The picture show was very interesting but I enjoyed the news reel most. I was surprised to find that “Hassel Cartwright, a very famous poet, is now in England. However, I was more surprised when I saw that “Bubba” wright is now a football player on the University of Kentucky team. Before I returned to New York I wanted very much to see two more of my old classmates. First I wanted to see “Salty” King who now owns the most beautiful and modern grocery store I have ever seen. He has certainly done well, and I am very proud of him. 23 Class Prophecy Last, but certainly not least, is, and shall remain in my memory, the best friend I ever had. They say that the best of friends sometimes fight, well we must be good friends because we've fought enough. I guess by now you know I’m talking about Sara Don Henry. Now that I’m through I guess I’ll go collect my $50, 000 I made this year. CHARLES HALTERMAN Class Pessimist For some unfortunate reason I was picked for Class Grumbler, this year. Just why did this happen to me? Now that I've been picked for it, boy, am I going to grumble. First thing comes English. Wny do they teach English? Most people know how to talk, at least I do. .Lets take the study hall, now. They should let you sleep instead of making you strain your eyes looking at books. You can't walk down the hall without running into Mitch . He says Where are you supposed to be? You'll tell him. Well, get there, he'll say. And another thing I don't like is having to run to the office every time you're tardy or miss a day. Now take Miss Caldwell, you can't help it if you're tardy four or five times a week, can you? She used to be young once, didnH she? 1 don't see why some people make A's in school. I never make over a C. If I'm lucky, 1 might make a B. Most of it would be luck, if I did. Why do some people get out of school and the rest of us have to stay in? They should have at least one Holiday a week. Oh! but no, you must stay and study your little bitty seif to insanity. I don't see why they don't run a bus to the houses in the winter to keep us from freezing stiff. Of course, some of the kids have cars to go to school in. Well, I have two cars, too, my great big, good two feet. We never get to do anything at this school except study and study. At tim2s when I go to bed at night, all I see is books, and more books. Why, I don't see what keeps kids from going raving mad at school. You raise up and ask some- body passing by, Say, what time is it? They'll say, What do you care, your not going any place, are you? Then that makes me very unhappy. In the summer time the bugs and mosquitoes are so bad, when you shut the door, they start coming in the windows. Then you shut the windows and they start coming in the door again. Life sho does get worrisome, don't it? JOHN C. MITCHELL AND THE WILDCATS Under the fine supervision of Coach Mitchell the Wild- cats had a very successful year. Although they had a few drawbacks during the season. The Wildcats had some very tough games this year, but some how they managed to come out on top. Some- times they might have looked a little sluggish, but you could always bet they were going to show up before the game was over. The Wildcats had a rather tough schedule, but they didn't let that bother them at all, after they had won the first few games. They wanted to keep winning and they did. After the successful year was over the Wildcats were looking forward to winning the tournaments that were facing them. Also were the fans, that had been faithful to the fighting Wildcats during the year. BOYCE ROSS 48 LEFT TO RIGHT: Patricia Jo Gaddie, Betty Jo Watson - Captain, Del Rhea Roberts, Sue Hall.
