Though it appears at times that the English language is a mystery constant efforts are underway to solve the dilemma Because English IS a tool for other courses it is a required sublect rather than elective During the course students study the great works of English and American litera tue and build a foundation in English grammar Students develop the ability to thunk clearly to read understandungly and to express themselves skillfully and in telligently A number of creative com positions are written by the students A basic standard ot achievement is maintained by the department d all teachers of English are aware of their responsibility to see that each student achieves to his capacity ln order to measure the progress of students an English Cooperative Test IS given twice a year Vmcent Schwartz checks his answer sheet carefully since all tests are scored by the schools IBM machine 8 As chairman of the English d - partment George Peterson directs the operation of the English pro- gram and teaches English 11 and is also the 12th gra e adviser Miss Marcia Smith teaches English H and is a counselor She is also District Chairman of the Junior Red Cross Directing the speech activities for the Hibbing High School is Orville Olson.

m 2 Using the vernacular ofthe modern man, John Bucklen draws the attention of the students when he gives an impromptu speech in dramatics class. Classes in speech, drama, dramatics, and debate are taught to interested students in grades 10, 11, and 12. fx. 9 To teach an appreciation for our language is the desire of Miss Leonora Bohn, English 10, counselor, Miss Mary Barron, English 12, Chairman, Essay Contests, Ellwood Kar- wand, English 11, 12, Hi-Times, Quill and Scroll adviser, Armaine Bierk, English 10, 11, and B. J. Rolfzen, English 12, N.H.S. adviser. Other teachers of English are Miss Grace O'Hara, English 10, Miss Irene Walker, English 10, and Maynard Hendrick- son, English 11, Hematite adviser. Experiences in all forms of communication are a part of the English curriculum. ln Mr. Karwand's English 11, Warren Vincent demonstrates his ability in oral composition. Students in English 11 and 12 used Warriner's grammar workbook for the first time this year.
