MISSING SPOON FOUND IN SALAD Contrary to the usual humorous remarks about can openers and burnt sauce pans, the home economics department trains girls to become efficient home makers. Classes in cooking and homemaking teach the girls the most economical means of food buying and preparation. In Family Living students discuss family problems. Clothing classes help the girls to learn how to sew. In the spring of the year, many of the girls participate in the Betty Crocker cooking contest. fi GAIL Korpi and Pat Campbell prepare fruit for a salad in foods class. Under new directorships in chorus, band, and orchestra, the music department experienced continued growth. Moving from the band to vocal music, Mr. Clyde Hill established four chorus's, a mixed chorus, a boys' and girls' chorus, and the Blueiackets chorus. Mr. James Baldrica moved from the Lincoln Junior high school to assume control of the high school band. ln charge ofthe string orchestra for his first year at Hibbing was Mr. Richard Baer. Various public and school concerts were given by the music groups during the year. NEW musical arrangements are checked by JAMES BALDRICA, band director, CLYDE HILL, vocal mu- sic department, and RICHARD BAER, orchestra di- rector, instrumental music. TEEN-AGE MISPLACED IN LIBRARY Located next to the main study hall, the library is accessible to all of the stu- dents. Well stocked with reference material, fiction and non-fiction books, the high school library is a haven for the scholar. When a student is not in class, he is assigned to one ot the three study halls. During this period he is expected to work on outside class assignments. Sometimes a student may be excused from study hall to work on extracurricular projects. Teachers assigned to the library and the study hall do not have other class assignments. KATHLEEN Stuntebeck browses among the books in the section devoted to novels. All English classes require the students to supplement their class work with outside reading. The high school library carries the latest reference material for all departments of study. 22 DISPERSING books to the students are Mrs. JESSIE LYMAN, Miss MARGARET BRIGGS, head librarian, and Mrs. BETTE VELLELLA. With careful thought and planning, the group participates in such diversified activities as the Talent Show, fcfreign exchange studentproi- ect and assembly programs. A major project of the Council has been to bring a foreign student to the Hibbing High School each school year and to send a Hibbing student to a foreign country each summer. The Council meets the fourth hour on each Tuesday in the Balcony Conference Room. Here complaints and suggestions of the students are considered and investigated. Frequently, questions which touch on basic school policy must be explained to the students. 24 This group of students is a legislative and and not an executive body. All officially chartered clubs are represented in this group, and the chartering of these organizations is one of the annual constitutional duties of the Council. Under the guidance of the faculty advisers, Mr. Paul Kinney, and Mr. Elmer Salvog, the president of the Council, Robert Lindemoen, delegates authority to the other officers. TEACHING CHOSEN AS CAREER In I9118 the Iocal chapter ot the Future Teachers of America was formed. The pur- pose is to help prospective teachers gain an insight into teaching and an appreciation of the profession. Among the many activities of the club, the students assist the teachers in the elementary schools at various times ot the year. DURING 1959-60 From Vanersborg, Sweden, to Hibbing, Minne- sota, came Catherina Weister to spend a year in an American school and community. Through ar- rangements with the American Field Service, the Hibbing Student Council sponsoredCatherina as this year's foreign exchange student. This charming soft spoken young lady was a member ot the senior class. Her course ot study included English, Latin, American history, soc- ial studies, and speech. Mutual understanding and appreciation cer- tainly has been the result of this contact be- tween Sweden and Hibbing. .Q It E 'il V? ,,4 ' ,gf At the annual Hollyberry Tea sponsored by the Girls' League, Catherine presided at the punch table. Opening the season, the gridders squeaked by a highly underrated Moorhead team, 7 to 6. Collin Versich proved to be the hero as his extra point kick proved to be the margin of victory. ln their opening conference game of the season, the Jackets encountered an inspired Greenway team and were defeated, 19 to 0. Next meeting the tough International Falls Broncos, the squad led by Jerry Fena and Paul Ricci, broke loose in the second half of a hard fought game and subdued the Broncos, 13 to 0. BLUEJACKETS SECOND IN DISTRICT Hibbing's Basketball team got off to a very slow start this year, losing 5 out ot their first 7 games. This was due to the reason that they had only one returning starter and because they played some of the better teams in this region such as, Gilbert, Superior Central, Bemidji, and Crookston. The team also had numerous starters during the year. Even though they were having a bad year, the team was never short on aggressiveness and eagerness. This paid otf because after Christmas the team really started to play well. In their own District the team tinished third. 126 The Blueiackets defeated such watin 55-49, Nashwauk 53-47, and Deer River 73-44. The Jackets were defeated by such out- standing teams as Chisholm 49-44, and Green- way 6O-49- This was a good finish after a pocr start. This was due to both the hard work of the players and their coach Angelo Pergol. In the District 28 Tournament, Islibbing defeated Nashwauk 57-47 and then took Green- way 47-39. They then met Chisholm for the Championship and were defeated 59-51. Thus ending a very successful season tor the hoopsters.
