Cracking records in practically every meet, the swimmers won the first meet easily from Chis- holm breaking the national medley relay mark. In the next meet with Gilbert, Hibbing won easily again. The paddlers then met their most formidable rival. Virginia. Individual bril- liance triumphed over all-around team strength in the meet and our team won by only one point. Little regard was paid to rec- ords in that Hibbing equaled the state 50-yard dash, cracked the state 100-yard breaststroke and free style marks and the medley record. Virginia beat the state free style relay mark. Eveleth, Chisholm. Coleraine. and Ely were the next to fall before the powerful local speedsters. with Coder cracking the national breaststroke record in the first. In the return meet with Eveleth the Blue and VVhite again won. The second meet with Virginia gave Hibbing a decisive victory this time. The Aces achieved their greatest fame as a medley relay team with Captain Werller swimming backstroke. Glen Coder, breaststroke, and Iohn Gillis, crawl. As a medley combination they proved the best that any high school in the nation has yet produced, demon- strated by national records which they established in the 150 and 130-yard medley relays. In their individual events the Three Aces outclassed everything in the state, VViren setting a new otlicial state record for the 100-yard backstroke, Coder doing the same in the 100-yard breaststroke and Gillis establishing new times in the 50 and 100-yard free style events. As a reward for a season of outstanding work the Three Aces of the Hibbing champions were sent to Philadelphia to try their luck in a na- tional meet sponsored by the Penn Athletic Club. Their luck was good. and they managed to bring home six medals and a cup for three hrst places and a second, as well as a new national record in the 150-yard medley relay. Hibbing's three-man team won second in the nation. placing next to a full team from Tren- ton.
