Some look forward to this trip for the hrst time: some. for the second. Once more they were the cele- hrated guests ol the Canadian city. Had yoti 'tuned in. you might have heard our hand broadcast over station CKY. Alter a very hectic week of this. that. and many other things. otir wandering musicians re- turned home only to start once more. As the summer advanced they took part in conventions and holiday celehrations. Later on they went to the Minnesota State Fair. Here they proudly paraded with Hashy uniforms. shiny instruments. hrisk music and smiling drum majors. This indispensable organization pro- moted school spirit with its many lively marches. With a shrill hlast of the drum maior's whistle. eighty hand memhers dressed in their crisp, hlue uniforms straightened to attention and fell into step for a parade down Howard Street. This was almost a weekly event preceding each foothall game during the tall. The hand. which has proved to he one of the inost important musical organizations in the school. played a prominent part during the foothall and has- laethall seasons hesides appearing at the usual school functions. VVith snappy music the hand reassured the team memhers that the school was hehintl them. The concerts. which included numhers played with remarltahle understanding and ability. merited a great deal of admiration from the concert-goers. Our hand department this year was a great success. .Xll the memhers worked hard and as a result we have a very peppy musical organization. .Xnother victory was added to the school hand April 5. when the niemhers presented another outstanding program he- lore an appreciative audience under the ahle direction of Mr. Stelfen. The program was a dithcult one and one for which the hand deserves mttch credit. Row one: L. W'ellems, Lantlgren, Flynn, Pukkila, Johnson, O'Connell, Sinztmark, S. Kosltinen, Lomoro, F. To cut or not to cut-that was the question that faced the News stall throughout the year. Iournalism classes, correlated with senior linglish. took over the puhlishing of the High School News for the school year. Under Miss VVhite's supervision, the two jour- nalism classes alternated in preparing the articles for each issue. The stall. consisting of Irving Miller. editor-in-chief, and liarhara liechtel and Frank Lomoro. literary editors, did the planning and editing. 'Visits to the Hihhing Daily Trihune gave the stall infor- mation on how a newspaper is run. Another stride forward was taken when the News ioined the N. S. P. Cracking records in practically every meet, the swimmers won the first meet easily from Chis- holm breaking the national medley relay mark. In the next meet with Gilbert, Hibbing won easily again. The paddlers then met their most formidable rival. Virginia. Individual bril- liance triumphed over all-around team strength in the meet and our team won by only one point. Little regard was paid to rec- ords in that Hibbing equaled the state 50-yard dash, cracked the state 100-yard breaststroke and free style marks and the medley record. Virginia beat the state free style relay mark. Eveleth, Chisholm. Coleraine. and Ely were the next to fall before the powerful local speedsters. with Coder cracking the national breaststroke record in the first. The Aces achieved their greatest fame as a medley relay team with Captain Werller swimming backstroke. Glen Coder, breaststroke, and Iohn Gillis, crawl. As a medley combination they proved the best that any high school in the nation has yet produced, demon- strated by national records which they established in the 150 and 130-yard medley relays. In their individual events the Three Aces outclassed everything in the state, VViren setting a new otlicial state record for the 100-yard backstroke, Coder doing the same in the 100-yard breaststroke and Gillis establishing new times in the 50 and 100-yard free style events. As a reward for a season of outstanding work the Three Aces of the Hibbing champions were sent to Philadelphia to try their luck in a na- tional meet sponsored by the Penn Athletic Club. Their luck was good. and they managed to bring home six medals and a cup for three hrst places and a second, as well as a new national record in the 150-yard medley relay.
