Employingour many skills, we have excelled in every phase of high school life--scholastically, athletically, dramatically, and socially. The memorable events of our senior year will be called to our minds with immense joy and satis- faction. Scholastic accomplishments and rewards have been numerous, athletic records have been broken and re-established, and only a class like ours could have pro- vided so many lovely girls as queens and princesses. Our Senior Play, Flight Into Danger , was an amazing success which showed off our talent in a dramatic play. The excellent prom was the social event of the year put on in our behalf--thanks, jun- iors! With these activities, we tucked away a few sentimental souvenirs to help us recall in our coming years, our tremendous senior year. We feel especially privileged to have had two great honors bestowed upon our class: we are the first senior class to have sung the new Alma Mater of Hiawatha High School, and, we are the first also to have had a foreign exchange student--Joselito Britto, our friend from Brazil. His keen intelligence and charming Brazilian per- sonality have made him popular among the students of H.H,S, and the people of our community. As we come to the end of a long journey, we now realize these have been some of the best years of our lives. Each year, as they have discovered, the load becomes heavier, but their efforts have not been in vain. Those enrolled in biology developed unheard-of willingness--commonly referred to as intes- tinal fortitude. Scholastically, the juniors rated high, as indicated by the percentage of class members consistently on the honor roll. Nine junior lettermen were added to the H-Club as a result of their outstanding athletic abilities. In spite of costume and production difficulties, the juniors were successful in staging a spectacular play, Annie Get Your Gun , which, judging by the audience's reaction, was the best pro- duced for many years. The Junior-Senior Prom is definitely considered the most talked about and most appreciated social accomplishment of the junior year--and all for the seniors. Secret meetings and prom conferences aroused the attention and curios - ity of all the senior class members many weeks prior to the big evening. Efforts to raise money included the play and concessions at football and basketball games where the juniors exchanged goodies. for money in order to add to the class treasury. The class of '66 has added much to the success of Hiawatha High and is now impatientlyawaiting the arrival of their senior year! 'O-swf 7' 1 ln... Follow the leader--French stylel j ,vll .. . . I do it every time SOPH OM ORE The sophomores are now in full swing of their exciting high school careers. Having added to their credit one full year of association with upperclassmen, they feel that they are as much a part of everyday life here at Hiawatha High as anyone. The strange thing is that they are proving this to be true. Nearly all sophomore courses taken this year were electives giving the sophomores the new responsibility of choosing many of their pre- ferred classes. Those students who took geometry are to be admired for their courage in attacking the difficult concepts of planes and solids in space. The English classes have been acquiring valuable experience at writing term papers and doing re- search work. To 'student typists, who tried their best to type their names correctly, timedwritings presented a multitude of obstacles. A big class project to boost funds for their coming prom was a food sale. The sale was a success, the profit adding much to the class treasury. Being a class of cooperative people, they achieved many great things and are looking forward to their junior and senior years, with longing anticipation. E? in R if.. 1 ff' si ,W 1 FRE HME The freshmen have finally completed their first year of high school. This past year, though quite different from previous years, was triumphant for them. To these students, this year will be one of their most memorable to be spent at the high school. They have surpassed all expectations scho- lastically, athletically, and socially. The honor roll is evidence of their grade achievements withagood percentage of the class members represented. In addition to the required courses, the freshmen have had the experience of picking one or two elective courses to complete the program. As ninth graders they have shown a definite ability athletically with great promise in carrying out our sports program. Two class parties and picnics have relieved them from school Work, as have the various organiza- tions in which they participated. One of their class parties was a Christmas dance, held to introduce Santa to the kiddies, They went all out on this dance and had a very good time. Study halls and seventh hours were relinquished to type copy, cut and paste pictures. Night meetings as well as after-school sessions were many, and to the chant of when can we go home , much was ac- complished. A lot of work goes into publishing an annual, but upon completion, the finished product is more than ample reward for the hours of pondering, meditating, and crying over the material used and rejected. As any staff member will verify--it's all a part in publication. Knee deep-in discarded copy on deadline day, we strived to meet the requirements. Aleta Spaulding, Jane Schock, and Miss Owen attended the Kansas State University's yearbook workshop in early summer. We are proud to acknowledge that Aleta was selected as a member of the Wildcat Staff. The workshop proved to be arewarding experience inlearning the techniques of layout and advertising. A sincere thanks goes to all students, including Randy Starr, who helped with the photography, to all faculty members, and especially to our patient sponsor, Miss Owen. Attending all home games, these girls now have the use of a bus to attend out-of- town games. Besides backing the boys at games they plan pep rallies, after-game parties and climax the year with the Squaw-Letterman Banquet in honor of the outstanding athletes and Squaws. In addition, they arrange and sponsor the Homecoming Dance and the Sweet- heart Dance. All of these events are anxiously awaited by a reat many of the students. The girls enjoy p anning and presenting the pro- grams for pep rallies. These are greatly appreciated by the boys--and the other students enjoy them too. Aiding the girls with pep rallies and arrangements for other events is Mrs. Cowley, the Squaw sponsor. This year some of the projects of the Squaws were selling sweatshirts, pennants and stickers. Good sportsmanship, a strong principle of all athletics, is created and upheld by this pep club as they boost the team on to victory. Any athlete having lettered in any field of sports may become a member. The purpose of the club is to promote good sportsmanship and to further the knowledge of sports. The club journeyed to Manhattan to observe the grueling match between Kansas University and Kansas State University in football. The chance of a lifetime came to senior high girls at the auction of the lettermen as two-day slaves. The Kansas Association for Youth has approximately 19,000 members, of whom we are proud to have 88 in our Senior Kayettes. The objectives of our club are Religion, Personality, Leadership, Service, Appreci- ation, and Recreation. With the help of our sponsor, Mrs. Nadine Percy, the Kayettes are striving to reach these objectives. As part of our service, we support Chuen Har, an eight-year-old Korean girl. She has been our foster child for nearly three years now. She began primary school in September of 1964 and is doing very well. This gear they enjoyed the friendship of Joselito ritto, an American Field Service Exchange Student whom they helped bring to our school. The club sponsored the annual Halloween party held after the Halloween Parade as they have done for a number of years. Also some of the members of the club attended the Kay-Kayette Conference held at Effingham this year. At this meeting they obtained some new ideas to put into effect in their own club. The boys planned and sponsored the Grade School Track Meet held this spring. This track meet took cooperation on the boys' part and they seemed to have done very well. To the enjoyment of the entire student body and many others, the boys held the Kay Car- nival this year. They worked hard for this event, but they had loads of fun, too. This club is an asset to our school and it pro- vides an outlet for the boys' abilities in leadership, creativeness and especially in excess energy. STAGE BA D Q 3 I ff, r 50 ACTIVITIES HOMECOMING QUEEN Sue Trojovsky H OMECOMING Our lovely 1964 Homecoming queen, Sue Trojovsky, was escorted by Mark Allee, with Aleta Spaulding and Peggy Buis as attendants, escorted by Gary Howard and James Reed, respectively. The Homecoming candidates were voted on an d selected by the football boys, with the season's tri-captains serving as escorts. The Squaws and the H-Club each thought that the other had bought the crown, but it was soon realized that one had not been purchased. Quite hurriedly, someone con- tacted our '64 Sweetheart Queen Debby Groves, who graciously lent her crown for the evening. The following day, a crown was presented to Sue, with sincere apologies for the misunderstanding. Red, white, and blue convertibles carried the girls onto the football field while the Hiawatha band, in the formation of a crown, played Somewhere Over The Rainbow for Sue, Moon River for Aleta, and A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody for Peggy. After the game with Sabetha an elaborate dance was held in the Armory, with midnight blue and white carry- ing out the theme, ln The Misty Moonlight. Adding to the enjoyment of the evening was the music fur- nished by the Marysville dance band. We will all remember this Homecoming as the time the queen's crown was nearly forgotten. This year's fiftieth annual Halloween Frolic will linger in the hearts and minds of our students for many years to come. This year's celebration will be an especially memorable event to one member of the senior class, Miss Dolly Hatfield. Dolly was elected by the student body to represent Hiawatha High in the Queen's Pageant. She was kept very busy for a week prior to the celebration attending many social functions. On the night of the Queen's Coronation Pageant the judges were forced to reach a decision as to who would reign over the festivities for 1964. Miss Hiawatha, radiant in an ice blue formal with a dark blue sash trim and trailing tie against the background of the Royal Coach, was chosen third runner-up. Aleta Spaulding and CayCurless served as Royal Pages. One of the first floats in the parade was the Queen's float graced with five beautiful young ladies. Hiawatha students are justly proud that their school was represented by such a talented and lovely girl. zzz: :mm , In .aw v- . A SWEET HEART QUEEN SWEETHEART v During the halftime OI our victorious game with Powhattan, the Squaws and the cheerleaders formed the traditional heart and the three candidates were escorted into the center. The suspense mounted and it was finally announced that Miss Linda Weaver was our beautiful 1965 Sweetheart Queen. She was given a bouguet of red roses and a kiss by her escort Mike ermann, who realized that he had not crowned her. He then crowned her and kissed her again as was necessary and fitting after the cor- onation! The queen and her court were seated in a place of honor to reign over the last half of the game. Following the game, a lovely dance was held in the beautifully decorated Elementary School Aud- itorium. Several factors contributed to the over- whelming success of this production. First, each part had to be given to the person who fit the part most closely. The casting was superbly done and each character played his or her role to utmost perfection. Second, the hours of practice are not to be denied. As any junior will tell you, the many early morning and late evening rehearsals that preluded this play were worth the suffering for the success they brought. Third, the costuming done on this type of p ay is no small task. Private homes and attics were searched for just the right dress or suit to be convincing, and new clothes were designed and made to fit the parts of each character. Finally, and most important to the play was the excellent direction of Mr. Carl Blackwood. Without his guidance, imagination, skill and patience the play would not have been the outstanding success it was. And for each bird I getcha, ya gotta give me two nickels and one dime. Now, how I used to do this? Was from right ear to eyebrow? From left ear to right ear? Oh, well, I maybe make bad mess, butl try. Having 21 per cent of their 72 members on the honor roll or honorable mention at some time during the year is indication of their high scho- lastic standing. Their ability to mix well was appar- ent in the great interest shown in organizations--- Kays, Kayettes, and Papooses. By participating in these organizations the students gain the leadership and experience needed to make their senior high clubs more successful. The big dance this year was the annual Sweetheart Dance sponsored concur- rently by the Junior Kays and Junior Kayettes. During the evening, a King and Queen were selected to reign over the Sweetheart ceremonies similar to those held by the senior high. Athletics are becom- ing increasingly important to these junior high boys, who, as freshmen next fall semester, will begin actual participation in high school sports. Besides the many class parties and organi- zational functions, these students will probably remember most their eighth grade commencement exercises, which are held in May with the distri- bution of diplomas, certifying that junior high days have come to a close, andhigh school is just ahead. ,gi 15 Kathryn McCoy President William Jones L .M ,IYHIQ A Vice-President finlg? 5 Judith Middendorf ,541 ' Secretary-Treasurer Q Carol Swaim X' , Student Council .gif Janet Argabright E., 4 Diana Atlakson -if Lam ert Baile Y it ' ' 5 Leslie Banta y V- Steven Bevan ,I Terrence Bogan ..., ' Af? .fi i 1 , I --Wi' Ii? U ,, if EVE TH GRADE Being new in the halls of H.l-l.S,, the seventh graders had a trying time getting used to the rituals of junior high. These various routines, such as new schedules and rushing from class to class-- trying to be on time, were not always easy to master. Once they adapted, they did exceptionally well scholastically, athletically, and socially. The seventh grade boys played soccer quite often this year due to the influence of our foreign student, Joselito. For the first time they chose class officers, participated in school organizations, and had class picnics and parties. They had a picnic in the fall at Sycamore Springs and enjoyed roller skating. Also, to the amazement of the girls, some of their classmates mastered the art of dancing by going to their class parties. New responsibilities were taken on with all these new activities. To guide them in all these responsibilities were Mr. McBride and Mr. Jeff Anderson, their class sponsors. This has been a year of trials and triumphs for this class and it will not soon be forgotten. JUNIOR HIGH SWEETHEART A nominating committee of Junior Kays selected four girls as candidates, two from each class. Likewise, a committee of Junior Kayettes also named four boys. The two organ- izations voted on the eight candidates, a penny a vote. On February 15, the money was counted--the girl and the boy with the most pennies became the 1965 Sweetheart royalty. This is the big social event of the year, talked about for months before and months after. It is also the money-making event of the year with the money being sent to Meals for Millions. 1--2--3, 1--2--3--3--3--. Without these advertisers and boosters it would be most difficult to publish this book. We urge the students to show their gratitude by patronizing these advertisers. We would also like to say thank you to our most efficient sponsor, Miss Grace Owen, without her patient guidance the '65 Redskin would and could not have been published. We hope that this book will recall many happy events and memories . . . all school dances, athletic events, musical programs, contests, class parties, friends and class- mates for the 1964-65 school year at HJ-l.S. Truth and honor be our watchwords As we ever onward go. Grant us grace, oh God our Father, That thy blessings on us bestow. Words by Mr. R. E. Weide FARE WELL As we walk through the halls of H.H.S. for the last few times as students, we feel a pang of regret as we realize our magnificent high school days are swiftly coming to an end. We recall our wonderful times shared with class- mates and the many friends we shall leave-be- hind to carry on the traditions of our beloved school. We marvel at the way our charming foreign student, Joe , has made himself one of us and participated in our customs as we say, So long, it's been good to know you! We especially want to thank our three spon- sors for helping make our senior year the greatestl As we say thanks and best wishes to all , we hope to be remembered not for our occasional lapses but for our high purposes and our successful endeavors.
