THE LOST OPPORTUNITY She awoke early that particular moming As she looked around the stark bare room which she called her own she thought to herself Today will be the last day that I will have to face these barren walls again She packed a little bag with one loaf of bread and some hard cheese She dressed in her warmest clothes which were not many and around her head she tied a small scarf which had patches sewn over the holes On her feet she wore a pair of heavy shoes the only sturdy part of her outfit ln this manner she quietly stole out of the little shack not awakening the only other pair sleeping in the only other room As she walked out into the cold moming air she became alive Looking first to the right and then to the left she proceeded forward Her heart pounding and her brain going over each step of her prepared plan she advanced She kept thinking I MUST stay calm I WILL stay calm No one was in sight yet she knew that at any minute at any point she could be stopped and questioned This area parttcularly the area ten miles between her shack and the border would be heavily guarded but she would take her chances Running now to get to the protection of the woods her breath came in gasps but she kept on Finally in the shelter of the trees she slowed down and rested but not for long She had to keep going she could not stop After a short rest and a bit of the bread she continued on her dangerous way Stumbling over hidden branches her legs were bruised and her hands were cut but she struggled on High above she heard the sounds of the forest The trees were singing hurry hurry as the wind rushed through their naked branches While looking up she stumbled she pushed on It was now six hours slnce she had left her humble dwelling and she hoped that the others had not called the police lf the latter were true she had to hurry for the time would grow short She stopped once more but could not stop long She was halfway to her destination and only had time for a minute of rest a little bite of cheese and a piece of stale bread this being the last bit of food until she reached the border The day grew darker and the air grew colder Her feet were numb and her hands had no feeling within them but her strength had not given out for within her heart beat as strong as ever She thought Only a few more miles and l shall be free That was the only thing that kept her body and mind moving She had planned this day for years and now her plan would come true She was close to the border now which meant that she must slow down her welfare lay in her ability to be quiet and in her alertness She was crawlxng now instead of walking The ground was cold against her hot face and she could feel the hard and Jagged stones and vines as she crawled forward on her stomach Slowly very slowly she edged her wav along the ground until she saw the barb wire fence Her heart stopped beating as she stared at the marvelous sight in front of her Slowly and cauttously she wormed her way forward every now and then turning to see if anyone was in sight Ten five three feet more to go and she would be free A few more when out of nowhere a shot was heard She stared dumbfounded trying desperately to stand and run but collapsing in front of the barb wire With her last bit of strength her hand grabbed under the wire and as the life ebbed from her body she clasped to her heart the soil of a free country June Feldmann Twelfth Grade 48 . U . ' . . ' and twisted one of her ankles. Pain shot through her leg, but her determination was far greater--
