Design For Living By JANE NEWLAN Win,ning Senior Essay In Gods great world there is one cherished gift which has been awarded to every individual-1 life. Although there is nothing comparable to this treasure, it is the one thing that the majority of the people let slip through their fingers like worthless grains of sand. Once the moments of life have passed away, they can never be regained and put to a more satisfactory use. There is no doubt that if we realize the value of life and the importance of spending each second like a hundred-dollar bill, we shall live a happier and more worthwhile existence. Since the beginning of time life has always been held in the highest esteem, but it has never been considered too great a price for one person to give his life that the lives of others may be saved. Scientists for years have devoted their en- tire lives to explore the unlmown in an effort to safeguard, prolong or rescue a life from the clutches of death by disease. Capital punishment is an example of the value of life as regarded by society. Certainly if to lose life is the worst of all fates, to have life should be recognized as the greatest privilege attained by anyone: therefore, how can anyone treat life like a toy or a piece of clothing? How can any person put life in a closet and use it only when he feels it is necessary? Life is an investment that God has made in us. It is our bounden duty to show our Creator that He has made a good investment and to pay Him baclc by putting to best use the resources in our power. ln order to spend life with discretion, the smallest components of life, seconds and minutes, must first be utilized fully. Even the most trivial act may be a poor expenditure of time if there exists behind it no underlying or obvious motive. However, one should not limit his actions to finan- cial or scholastic achievement. An effort aimed at enjoyment, health or relaxation must also be considered sensible. However, having a purpose alone is only half the battle of spending moments wisely. Unless every plan of action is carried out completely and results can be shown, obviously the incentive was not strong enough in the first place. Part of life consists in associating with others. Friendship is almost as essential as rest and nutrition. Unfortunately human beings often have a tendency to involve themselves in an artificial web of friendship from which they benetit little. Friends should have common interests and should be able to offer one another advice, experience and knowledge, as Well as companionship. Fre- quently it is advantageous for an individual to seelc the friendship of those who need his intel- lect and ability. Such a relationship tends to round out his personality by giving him the assur- ance that he is assisting others and performing a useful taslc in life. If the union of two minds gives the opportunity neither to absorb nor to offer knowledge, assistance or experience, once again life is being expended carelessly. Adolescence is really the decisive era in life when every moment's value must be estimated with the most scrutiny. By wasting the all- important moment, a youngster may seriously affect the outcome of his later life or future career and live to regret his mistake forever after. Even before adolescence the idea of life's importance should be instilled in a child so that he will be adequately prepared for the trial in life that he will soon be called upon to face. Not only a person's career but his personality as well may tend to rest on his altitude during adolescence. A foolish youngster, who is deaf and blind to the fact that he should devote his every moment toward enlarging his lcnowledge of the world about him toward some other purpose that will later benefit him, will grow into a lazy, and ig- norant person, laclcing in any of the characteris- tics of a successful individual. Vvhen adolescence is 'treated as only a time for fun and diversion, an unhappy adult life results. Instead of budgeting the iniiuential moments of youth, a person will try to talce on the impossible burden of shaping his life when it is half over. Middle age is the proper time to reap the benefits of a youth spent wisely. It is the time to talce those few extra moments that one denied himself in his youth. The person who never wastes a second of his life, who has a purpose for his every act, and who can find an accomplishment in everything he attempted, will never exist: however, the indivi- dual, especially the adolescent, who persistently endeavors to follow such a pattern toward self- improvement has a one-way ticlcet to success.
