TX T' ix X The Battle of the Buttons An unadorned shirt alone there sits, Exhausted from the tiring war of wits, Forced hrutally into a fight so vile, By unrelenting laws of lvy Style. Before this pretense to the throne was feigned, The nude straight collar undefeated reigned, With never a sign to tell that days would come, W When laurel wreaths helong to other ones. And now the field with dye of threads dark stained, The huttoned collar vantage now has gained, But in the end victorious who will he, Remains for future years' results to see. My Brother's Executioner I have lived, and I am old With hiting memory of hearts so hold, For I have seen, and I have done Things from which simple men would run. I sit here thinking all the time, In this hlaclc asylum of mine, Furl have memories, oh yes, I have done little, hut should have done less. I saw my own helovecl friend. I saw my brother reach his end, I felt his pain when the guillotine hit, And I was present at the pit. I cried and cried hut to no avail, I couldn't malce him cringe with fear, lcould only hy his graveside, drop a tear. So now I have come to the end of my life, The end of all trouhle, the end of all strife. Morhid and gruesome I surely must soun', For I was the executioner in our town.
