Didcoct. For ten years her name has been synonymous with joie de vie. Her wonderful, contagious humor, the radiant zest with which she lives life, her deep capacity for friendship - all these and many more beautiful qualities have endeared her to students and faculty. We all agree the halls of Hewitt have been far happier because Mrs. Didcoct spread sunshine here. IS Br) ' ADMINISTRA TION Kathy Burgess: Editor Our Principa j Guides the Student Body Mr. Reuben Robison received his B.S. and M,A. de- grees from Troy State and the University of Alabama. This is Mr. Robison ' s third year as principal of Hewitt. He lives in Trussville with his wife and two children, and attends the First Baptist Church of Trussville. This year Mr. Robison ' s message is dedicated to the Seniors: The best verse hasn ' t been rhymed yet, The best house hasn ' t been planned, The highest peak hasn ' t been climbed yet. The mightiest rivers aren t spanned; Don ' t worry and fret faint-hearted , The chances have just begun For the best jobs haven ' t been started. The best work hasn ' t been done. Unknown Robby, Mrs. Robison, Mr. Robison, Tracy 21 School Personnel Handle, MR. HERBERT O. EUBANKS is our assistant principal and head coach. Even though his jobs require much time and effort, he seems to handle them very effective- ly. Mr. Eubanks must also handle the discipline of the students; however, this does not lessen his popularity. He is very capable, and we feel very fortunate to have him at Hewitt. 22 Discipline, Guidance, and Records, MRS. DELIA SUTTER Mrs. Sutter has been receptionist and book- keeper at Hewitt for twenty years. She also keeps entries of each club ' s funds. Her serv- ices are appreciated. MRS. LAURA PARSONS Mrs. Parsons has been our capable record keeper for the past seven years. She handles student ' s grades, permanent records, trans- fers, and transcripts. MRS. MARION ORMOND Mrs. Ormond is an understanding advisor, who helps the students to adjust and rearrange their schedules. She also advises them on college programs and entrance exams. In spite of her busy day, she is always willing to lend a hand to students who need her guidance. MR. DAVID LOGAN Mr. Logan works three days a week at Hewitt. He is involved with Federal Programs such as the Neighborhood Youth Corps, and will assist anyone who is interested in voca- tional training. 23 P.E. Encourages Competition. The developement of the body is as much a part of true growth and maturity as the developement of the mind. The excellent P.E, department at Hewitt helps stu- dents to develop good attitudes of sportsmanship. A new phase of physical education at Hewitt is called modem dancing. It not only helps them physically, but also helps them to become more creative as a person. Students who take an extra interest in physical education may also serve as a physical education assistant , which includes helping to use good sportsmanship as well as skillful training. MRS. A modern language labora- tory is available to the French and Spanish students. In the laboratory, students are able to speak into the tape record- ers, play it back to them- selves. This helps the students a great deal in developing the proper accent. 29 Office Occupation, preparation for the business world The ever-expanding business world has come to Hewitt through courses in office occupations. This is a highly competitive field. Students graduating from office occupation are qualified to obtain positions in this competitive field. Hewitt offers a wide range of business courses. CHARLES RICE No mail can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge. The teacher who walks in the shadows of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and lovingness. If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind .. . And even as each one of you stands alone In God ' s knowledge, so must each one of you be alone in his knowledge of God and in his understanding of the earth. - The Pro pfipt 34 SENIORS Cynthia McKinney: Editor Mm ' Billy Leads the KAREN KAY ABERNATHY CONSTANCE JEANETTE ALDRIDGE MARK ALLISON CARL LEWIS ANKER Billy Morrison - President Terry Case - Vice-President Jenna Polk - Treasurer Reida Todd - Secretary Jlass of ' 71 SUSAN YVONNE BAGWELL MARY ELLEN BARBER ROBERT CLEO BEASLEY . They had two wins this year - one against the Pinson Valley Yearlings, and the other a glorious home- coming victory against Mortimer Jordan. However, a couple of really bright spots in the season were Jesse Hooks and his incredi- ble touchdown runs which led him to a place on the all-county team, and promis- ing David Morrison, who will be back next year to provide a lot of power and drive fo the team. But the Huskies should not be too dis- appointed because the entire student body is very proud of them for the grand effort. TIMMY WEST JOHN STUEDEMAN MIKE HAWKINGS MARK NEEDHAM JEFF MORRISON m . .j au ' S FIRST ROW: Harlan Taylor, Dana Bryant, Mike Case, James Criswell, Randy Williams, Vic Williams, Bobby Lepper, Don Miller. SECOND ROW: Billy Ray Lovvorn, Billy Freeman. Lee McAvoy, Bill Stuedeman, Elmer Bryant, Kenny Yarbrough, Stinson Martin, Jeff Morgan, Tommy Criswell. 113 Hooks Makes All-County! The Huskies kicked off this season with a kick to Leeds ' Green Wave. Early in the first quarter, Jim Miller received the unfortunate injury which kept him off the field for the rest of the season. Leeds grabbed the first points of the game about halfway through the first quarter with a touchdown and extra point kick. The score remained the same - LEEDS 7, HEWITT - until the end of the quarter. Early in the second quarter, Leeds made an unsuccessful field goal attempt. They followed this up a few plays later with an- other touchdown, but it was called back due to a penalty against Leeds for illegal procedure. The ball changed hands several times until Leeds again got possession just before the end of the half and kicked a forty-one yard field goal. The half ended with the scoreboard reading - LEEDS 10, HEWITT 0. About halfway through the third quarter, Leeds scored on a pass and followed it up with a good extra point kick. Hewitt did not score until the fourth quarter when Ronnie Smith charged across the line. Mike Humphries was so eager to get the extra point, he kicked his shoe off making it good. The game ended with the score - LEEDS 17, HEWITT 7. 114 For the second game of the season, Tarrant came to the Hewitt football field. Tarrant drew first blood early in the first quarter with a touchdown and two point conversion, and the Huskies were weak from loss of blood for the rest of the game. A few plays later Tanant made their second touchdown and followed it up with a good extra point kick. Little did the Huskies know that they were not to score in this game. About halfway through the second quarter, Tanant got a third touchdown off a pass and picked up the extra point. Near the end of the half, Tarrant intercepted a pass and took it all the way for a touchdown. Once again the extra point kick was good. Only one touchdown was made in the second half by Tarrant and the kick was again good. As the lights went out around the field, the scoreboard read - TARRANT 36, HEWITT 0. This was Pinson Valley ' s first season, so the Huskies decided to give them a lesson in how to play football. Early in the fint quaner, Jesse Hooks got his hands on the ball and took it sixty-eight yards for a touchdown. The PAT attempt was successful. Near the end of the first quarter, Mike Humphries picked up the second touchdown for Hewitt, and the kick was good. Nearly halfway through the second quarter, Jesse Hooks scored his second touchdown of the game and once again the kick was good. Close to the end of the second quarter, Frankie Ham- ilton plunged over from the two yard line for another touchdown. This time the kick was off the mark. When the halftime show began, it was highlighted by a score which read - HEWITT 27, PINSON 0. There was lots of action but no scoring until near the end of the third quarter when Carl Anker ran the ball for a touchdown. However, it was called back on a penalty. IIS On the fiist play of the fourth quarter, Hewitt recovered a Pinson fumble and turned it into a touchdown. The kick was no good. There was no more scoring in this game and when everyone went home the scoreboard read - HEWITT 33, PINSON 0. The Huskies met the Rockets on their own launching pad. To start the game off right, Jesse Hooks made an un- believable eighty-one yard run for a touchdown. However, the extra point kick failed. About halfway through the quar- ter, Gardendale picked up their first touchdown and got the extra point. On the fourth play in the second quarter, Jesse Hooks took the ball 29 yards for another touchdown. The ball remained in play during the remainder of the quarter, but when the halftime horn sounded, the score was - HEWITT 12, GARDENDALE 7. When the second half started, the Rockets got started on a scoring streak that just wouldn ' t quit. About halfway through the third quarter, Gardendale grabbed a touchdown and followed it up with an extra point. Just before the end of the quarter, the Rockets picked up another touchdown on a seventy yard run and once more the kick was good . M r. E ■■' - ' - ii i l B ' T 0i M i H V k H 116 Around the middle of the founh quarter, Gardendale picked up another touchdown, but missed the kick. A few plays later, Butch Hall took a pass from Carl Anker 47 yards for a touchdown. The kick was no good. After several plays Gardendale made their final touchdown of the game and the kick was good. However, the Huskies managed to squeeze in one more touchdown before the end of the game. To top off a passing drive by Carl Anker and Butch Hall, Butch took the founh pass 25 yards for the touchdown. The kick failed. The scoreboard read - GARDENDALE 34, HEWITT 24. When the Huskies met Minor, they were the top team in the state and had only had three touch- downs scored against them. Hewitt ran the total up to four. Near the end of the first quarter, Jesse Hooks made another one of those fantastic touchdowns which helped to pave his way to the all-county team. His heroic effort produced the only touchdown of the game, but it really did cause Minor a lot of pain. Though the Huskies fought back fiercely, they could not score again and the game ended with the score - MINOR 32, HEWITT 7. iir CARL ANKER ROBERT BE AS LEY SIDNEY BOS WORTH CHRIS BUCKNER TERRY CASE MORRIS COUSINS 118 MIKE DUNAWAY MARK FREDERICK BUTCH HALL 11 . • . f ' , .«A. The Huskie team went to the Dora Invitational and came back with a second place trophy. The H- T basketball record is one that has always been great. After much work from the players and steady coaching by Coach Jimmy DeVenny , the Huskies were ready for one of the hardest seasons yet. The first game with Springville, was played at Hewitt ' s gym. The tradi- tion carriers breezed through this one with the final score of 60-42 and started off the season great. Next was Hewitt ' s most colossal rival, E. B. Erwin. The team has been led in their struggle by Buddy Lucy and David Reed this season. The hard work shown by Bill Abemathy and Doug Morgan has really paid off, because thus far in the season, they are the two top scorers. By being fast on their feet and having lightning fast reflexes, Danny Kincaid and Lee Cordes have managed to become the top rebounders. The team is really putting out a lot of effort toward improving, and they do indeed show a great deal of prom- ise for future years. 129 FRONT: Ted Smith, Robert Maddox, Steve Ginn, Bill Abernathy, Rickey Davis, Johnny Melvin. Tense Close Games Put Hewitt Trussville baseball began to draw crowds last year, thanks to a great team, and this year ' s team was no disap- pointment. As crowds massed around the baseball field, tense and excited, the Husky sluggers moved up and up in the county standings. A tense, but victorious (2-0) game against Gardendale moved Hewitt Truss- ville into the county semi-finals. But, on their way to the top, the Huskies were shot down in their prime by Minor (3-1), ending the season with a record of 14-10. This year ' s team was certainly one to take pride in. Every player should be proud of the great job the team did and the new name that they are making for Hewitt Trussville in baseball. 130 I HT in Spotlight i4m )31 FRONT ROW: Ronnie Smith, Drake Pelham, Bill Wright. SECOND ROW: Frankie Hamilton, Lynn Phillips, Jesse Hooks, Bobby Cordes. Movin ' Out! Unfortunately, there has been little specta- tor interest in track at Hewitt Trussville. This is unfortunate for both the participants as well as the students at Hewitt, because if the students at Hewitt had gone to the track meets, and there were many of them to go to, they would have been proud to have seen their school so well- represented. They might have seen such things as Herbert Brown long- jumping his way to thestate track meet with a jump of over 19 feet. They might also have seen Jesse Hooks run away with second place in the 220 yard dash at the Jefferson County track meet at which Hewitt also placed fifth in over- all competition. 132 They might have gotten to meet boys on track teams from all over the state if they had come to the annual Hewitt Trussville Invitational track meet. If they had come to the Invitational meet they would also know that it is the largest track meet of its kind in the great- er part of the South. There is a lot more to track than just a bunch of muscle-bound guys running round and round a track all day. At Hewitt Trussville track meets, at least, track involves the pitting of one man ' s skills against those of another, with the names of their respective schools in the balance. This spirit is well portrayed by the Hew- itt track team and the student body should take great pride in the fact that they are so well represented. W.C.A. with whose method of work and program it is in accord. The primary objective of this club is to provide opportunity for girls to develop their lead- ership potentials and have a sense of personal re- sponsibility for today ' s world. The Y-Teen goals are to grow as a person, to grow in friendship with people of all religions and nationalities, and to grow in knowledge and love of God. Requirements to become a Y-Teen are that a girl be in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grades, is wil- ling to devote herself and her time to the better- ment of the club, and she must enjoy making others happy. Each member is devoted to the service of her school, home, and community. This year some of the Y-Teens ' services have been: taking Halloween pumpkins to the children at the Gateway Mercy Home on Halloween; tak- ing Thanksgiving baskets to needy families, and working at the Goodfellow Store, which supplies toys for needy children at Christmas and they took gifts to the Children ' s Ward of the University Hos- pital. These are just a few of the many ways that Y-Teens prove they care. Miss Y-Teen TERESA HARLOW 180 Officers Connie Aldridge, Pres.; Teresa Harlow, Vice Pres.; Gloria Garrison, I.C.C.
