I trust these reminders of Hewitt High will help you to stand up for what is right. Your school is a good school. Your stay here is fast coming to an end. Is your graduation in May gomg to-be your last one? Where are your classmates from the eleven preceding years who are not in your graduating class? Why are you still here and they are not? Each year you attend school you become apart of a select group. I hope you will become even more select by continuing your schooling. This doe5 not have to be your last graduation. Furthermore, after this year, I ' m giving up hopscotch on Satur- days. There ' s a story that ' s told on the teachers at school When they let off their steam, they lose all their cool. Mrs. Burgess for one can say more in a minute Than Mrs. ESdcoct forgets when her heart is not in it And then there are those who keep everything quiet Like our Miss Floyd who can calm any riot But at the end of the year, they ' re aU good for laughs Look at their conduct in the yearbook ' s photographs. Km sliould lia c . n n -. ;,,i! i 33 Teachers at their best! If you could only lose ten more pounds, I ' m sure it would fit. My girdle is killing me! What are those black crawly looking things? Then I forgot to say, May 1? Nuts! I ' ll never get out of the third grade! 34 SENIORS Pam Roper: Editor Seniors ' 70 JUDY ABELS JAN ADAMS DONALD ROPER ALLEN DOROTHY ANNE AMICK DOTTIE ARNDT ANTHONY OLEN AUSTIN 36 JERRY JASON BAGWELL BILLY BALCOlvIB PEGGY BALCOMB Best Yet! It was the first winning season Hewitt Trussville has seen in years. The Huskies racked up an impressive record of five victories and four losses, including Hewitt ' s first victory over Shades Valley in twelve years. Hewitt Trussville has made itself a new name in football, thanks to the superior playing shown by the Huskies this year. Everyone at Hewitt Trussville owes every member of the team a debt of gratitude. The team should also be thankful to the many students who backed them. The students showed their spirit and confidence in the team by attending the games and cheering the Huskies on to victory. Hewitt Trussville High School is justly proud of its fighting Huskies. Shades Valley got their first points when Hewitt got set to kick and the ball was fumbled behind the line. Soon after the beginning of the second quarter, Shades Valley got its first touchdown. The following two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful. Later in the second quarter,. Shades Valley got another touchdown, but it was called back. Later, Steve Waid managed to crash through the Shades Valley line to make the first Hewitt touchdown. Then the Huskies made a successful two-point conversion. Early in the fourth quarter Hewitt made another touchdown and the extra point kick was good. Near the end of the game. Shades Valley managed to make another touchdown. This brought the score to Hewitt- 15, Shades Valley-14. Shades Valley tried to make a two- point conversion and failed. During the final seconds of the game Shades Valley attempted a field goal, but the ball was off to the right and it was no good. When the buzzer sounded the score remained Hewitt 15, Shades Valley 14. 120 The Huskies rolled over Mortimer Jordon. Hewitt got the first touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. A little later Steve Waid took a punt and returned it ninety yards for a touchdown. After several plays, Gordon Marlow took a pass from Carl Anker fifty-nine yards for a touchdown. Still going strong, Waid once again got hold of the ball and carried it seventy-seven yards for another touch- down. Soon after the beginning of the second half, Mortimer Jordan made their only touchdown of the game. However, they followed this up with a suc- cessful two-point conversion. Later in the third quarter, Waid again got the ball and took it thirty- four yards for his third touchdown of the game. Late in the fourth quarter, Everette Jones caught a pass and made the last touchdown of the game. Jerry Stephen ' s extra-point kick was good, and the game ended with a score of Hewitt 46 Mortimer Jordan 8. , ._ ,.. Valley 15-14! 121 Hustlin ' Points — The The Huskies went to Tarrant stadium for the second grid- iron clash of the season. Hewitt and Tarrant both have very strong defensive teams, and this was easily the most prom- inent feature of the game. Both teams moved the ball all over the field, from one end to the other, but no touchdowns were made. The only score of the game was made in the first quarter when Tarrant received three points for a twenty- five yard field goal. It was during the second half of this game that the Hewitt Huskies turned into a well-oiled work- ing machine. When Hewitt met Gardendale, this working machine was set in motion. As a result, Hewitt ' s first victory was over the Gardendale Rockets. In the first quarter, Gardendale dashed seventy yards for their one and only touchdown of the game. Soon afterwards, Gordon Marlow took an Anker pass and turn- ed it into a touchdown. Later, Richard Reaves plunged over from the one yard line for the second touchdown. The first quarter ended with the scoreboard reading: HT-14, Garden- dale-6. Late in the third quarter, Gordon Marlow took another Anker pass for a touchdown. Early in the fourth quarter, Steve VVaid took a pass to the goalposts for the last touchdown of the game. As the whistle blew the scoreboard read: Hewitt-27 Gardendale-6. 122 Huskie Way When Hewitt met Minor, it could be said that this was the meet- ing of two of the strong winning forces in the county. Minor, with a home-field advantage, scored first, but the Huskies came back quick- ly. The strong defensive game of the Huskies was thwarted by the Minor offense. Hewitt and Minor vv ' ere pretty evenly matched, swap- ping points, until the final minutes of the game. Hewitt was ahead, 14 to 7, when, as the Birmingham News described it, The Huskies were bombed by the bomb. After two long touchdown bombs, Hew- itt was seven points down when the clock ran out. 123 Reaves makes a block; Anker throws the pass; DONALD ALLEN CAPxX ANKER ROLAND BEARD I- :. _ iBLRT l;i;aslly BOBBY BRAND CHRIS BUCKNER TERRY CASE DANNY COSBY MARK FREDERICK 124 Turner makes a grab; Taylor runs ' em down; MIKE GIBSON DALE GRIFFITH CLIFF HALL ■REDDY HAMILTON EVERETTE JONES JIMMY KEYEES GEORGE LANCASTER MIKE LANDMON GORDON M A RLOW 125 Marlow goes for TD; Stephens kicks for PAT. The team went all out to make it a winning season, which brought great results. Competition was very stiff and the crowds were wild with excitement. Goals were made quickly and accurately and the ball was mov- ing all the time. Spirit called for quick thinking, actio n, and strength for a fast, hard game. Our boys proudly demonstrated this spirit. The team, led by Skip Turner, captain, and E. B. Hanks, co-captain, scored a 76-67 victory over Springville for their opening game. Erwin was a great disappointment when the final score was 57-68, in favor of Erwin, but a comeback was made with a win over Mortimer-Jordan, Shades Valley came as another loss. The Huskies made easy victories at Corner and Tarrant, but the Walker County Tournament was as upset to our team when Walker County sustained the r 128 their best in basketball lead making the score 88-72. Enslcy showed us great competition in over- coming the Huskies by two points, leaving the score 57-55. Hewitt swamped tlie Green Wave with one of their best games. The Huskies made a great show in rack- ing up points to make an 83-79 victory. The Huskies were on their toes at Gardendale as the score rose and fell for both sides. Another Huskie victory was made when we walked over Warrior with an 87-79 win. At this point, the Huskies have done great with 7 wins and 4 losses, but they are expected to do better in the future games. The first games were for experience and practice as the Huskies prepare to do their stuff. E. B. They are struggling to at least overtake their opponent. The squad is doing the best possible to keep the Hewitt- Trussville wrestling record the way it has always been, great. Being always the best possible, the wrestlers have been a real crowd drawer. Since the hard working Hewitt- Truss- ville wrestling squad and the expert coaching by Coach Harbuck has proven to be the winning combination, and with this continuation in ex- cellence, the wrestlers will remain victorious for a long time. There was previously very little spectator interest in high school baseball at Hewitt, but due to the kind of playing seen at Hew- itt ' s baseball field this year the crowds around the field have really started to grow. Hewitt had an impressive record of five wins and five losses. At one time there was a tie for first place between Hewitt, Leeds, and John Carroll. John Carroll ' s victory over Leeds narrowed down the tie, but heightened the tension, Hewitt met Carroll on the afternoon before the prom and the crowd was a big one. Everyone was especially tense and the game was close. Both teams played magnificently, but Hewitt fell to defeat under a score of John Carroll - 1, Hewitt- Trussville - 0. 136 H-T Baseball excitement draws big crowds LEFT TO RIGHT: Tommy Carwyle, David Martline, Bobby Smith, Carl Ajiker, Terry LanJrum, Billy Morrison. 137 HT hosts big Invitational Meet Each year Hewitt- Trussville High School hosts a gigantic Invitational Track Meet. This year the event took place on a cold, windy Saturday and there were track teams from over forty high schools and thirteen junior high schools. Hewitt- Trussville High School was well- rep resented in many events and Hewitt- Trussville Junior High sent their large track team to compete in the junior high school competition. E. B. Hanks and Jesse Hooks had very little competition when it came time for the high jump. At the outcome, these two boys were competing with each other. The two Reaves brothers ran for Hewitt- Trussville and Freddy Hamilton was outstanding in the high hurdles competition. Hewitt- Trussville takes great pride in its ex- ceptionally fine track facilities and is proud to be able to make them of use to others. 138 FRONT ROW: Chris Buckner, Frank Hamilton, Jimmy Yates, Fred Hamilton, Ike Shoults, Jesse Hooks, Bill Wright. The Hewitt- Trussville Savings Bank is operated successfully by work of the students and the sponsor- ship of BTNB. The Savings Bank operates just like a large bank only on a smaller scale. The Savings Bank is just one in a number of Junior Achievement companies. This year the bank has more than doubled in its percentage of students banking. The homerooms going 100% in banking a number of times are given banners. At the end of the year the homerooms that go 100% the most number of times are to be given an ice cream party. The board of directors and room tellers do much to encourage banking. With the help of Mrs. Fry, sponsor from BTNB, and Mr. Whittaker, school spon- sor, the bank workers learn the entire banking sys- tem.
