Mathematics improve reasoning power Geometry, general math, and Algebra I, II, and III arc among the courses offered by the Mathematics Department. These courses are for students in- terested in mathematics. It is important that students know the mathematics that are essential for everyday life. MRS. BETTY THOMAS received her B.A. degree from Birmingham-Southern. She has taught at Hewitt for seven years and sponsors the Math Honor Club. MRS. VELMA SCRUGGS, sponsor of the Red Cross, re- ceived her B.A. degree from Alabama College. She has taught at Hewitt for thirteen years. MISS RUTH PEER, sponsor of the Student Council, has taught at Hewitt for nine years. She received her A.B. de- gree from Alabama College, and her M.R.E. and M.A. de- grees from New Orleans Baptist College and the Universi- ty of Alabama. ■5 •X MRS. NORMA BUSBY is teaching her first year at Hew- itt. She received her B.S. degree from Auburn University. 27

Business and office occupations aid wide range of careers Students who are planning a business career should be pleased with the wide choice of subjects the Business Department has to offer. Three years of office occupations, starting in the tenth grade are offered to stu- dents planning a clerical career. Subjects range from typing and shorthand to business law and business math. MRS. BARBARA KERSHAW attended Liv- ingston State Teachers ' College, at which she re- ceived her B.S. degree. After having been away from Hewitt for three years, she is back for her third year ot teaching here. MR. HORACE PANNELL received his B.S. de- gree from Livingston State College. This is his second year at Hewitt. MRS. SIBYL M. ANDREWS, sponsor of the MEM- ENTO, has a B.S. degree from Mississippi State Col- lege tor Women. This is her third year at Hewitt. MR. CHARLES H. RICE received his B.S. degree in Business Administration from Jacksonville State Uni- versity. This is his first year at Hewitt. 26

Coaches fulfill double need The coaches at Hewitt teach regular classes as well as supervising the athletic programs of our school, which include football, baseball, basketball, track, and wrestling, and the physical education classes. This makes their job and responsibility doubly important and time-consuming. We appreciate all the time and effort the coaches give our school. MR.
