Studies of social condiditons World History, American History, Alabama Histor -, Economics, Government, Civics, and Communism are courses of vital interest. These courses show how man has bettered himself and the world around him through the ages. By learn- ing about the past, we are preparing for the future. As a result of these courses, we become better citizens, who are able to take part in a democratic government. This is the main aim of the social studies department at Hewitt. MRS. BRENDA MILLER sponsors the Y-Teens during her third year at Hewitt. She received her B.S. degree from Jacksonville State University. MR. WALTER STEPHENS has taught at Hew- itt eleven years. He received his A.B. and M.A. degrees from Birmingham Southern College. MRS. MARY-HELEN VICK, chairman of the Miss Hewitt pageant and Senior Play, has taught at Hewitt nine years. She received her B.A. from Samford, M.A. from Alabama College, and A. A. from the University of Alabama. MR. JOHN F. DYER, sponsor of the Speech and Drama Club, has taught at Hewitt fifteen years. He received his A.B. degree from the University of Ala- bama. 25

Science probes deeper into the mysteries of existence MR. FRED WHITTAKER, JR. sponsors the bank .u Hewitt. He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Birmingham- Southern and Peabody College. He has taught at Hewitt four- teen years. It is essential that students take courses offered by Hewitt ' s Science De- partment if they wish to keep up with the rapidly expanding field of sci- ences. This offers courses in general science, biology, advanced biology, chemistry, and physics. Hewitt-Trussville has some ot the most modern equipment and the best trained teachers possible. This insures the best possible science program to be found anywhere. Students who wish to take a more extensive course in biology should take advanced biology. It is tor students going into biological or medi- cal fields. MR. ROBERT M. HAYNES attended Auburn University, where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees. Business and office occupations aid wide range of careers Students who are planning a business career should be pleased with the wide choice of subjects the Business Department has to offer. Three years of office occupations, starting in the tenth grade are offered to stu- dents planning a clerical career. Subjects range from typing and shorthand to business law and business math. MRS. BARBARA KERSHAW attended Liv- ingston State Teachers ' College, at which she re- ceived her B.S. degree. After having been away from Hewitt for three years, she is back for her third year ot teaching here. MR. HORACE PANNELL received his B.S. de- gree from Livingston State College. This is his second year at Hewitt. MRS. SIBYL M. ANDREWS, sponsor of the MEM- ENTO, has a B.S. degree from Mississippi State Col- lege tor Women. This is her third year at Hewitt. MR. CHARLES H. RICE received his B.S. degree in Business Administration from Jacksonville State Uni- versity. This is his first year at Hewitt. 26
