She attended the University of Alabama and Florence State where she received her M.A. and B.S. degrees. Mrs. Roby has served Hewitt for ten years. She lives with her husband Ray and her boxer in Roe- buck Plaza. She enjoys cooking, traveling, and intelligent humor. Mrs. Roby is an active member of the Trussville Church of Christ and is a serious student of the Bible. Because of her desire for students to learn and apply their knowledge and her hard work, we proudly dedicate the 1968-69 Hewitt-Trussville Memento to Mrs. Wilma Roby. 18 ADMINISTRATION Martha Mitchell: Editor 19 Our principal musi 20 3e chief overseer MR. REUBEN ROBISON received his B.S. and M.A. de- grees from Troy and the University of Alabama. This is his first year as principal of Hewitt, but he is experienced in this field through being principal of Minor High School last year and assistant principal here at Hewitt several years. Mr, Robison thinks Hewitt is composed of the best faculty and students with which he has ever been associ- ated. His pet peeves are students who linger in the halls, long hair, and short skirts. Mr. Robison lives in Trussville with his wife and two children and attends the First Bap- tist Church of Trussville. This is Mr. Robison ' s message to the students and faculty of Hewitt: As the years pass, life should grow earnest. Each year comes but once. Its lights and graces, its joys and griefs leave their marks; but it goes away forever. Its works, ff undone, must remain undone. As you look through this yearbook, we hope that you may see the mark you left at Hewitt Trussville High. Faithfully yours, Reuben Robison 21 Behind the MR. HERBERT O. Here, a team member is missing. And here, a club president. A voice in the mixed cho- rus you no longer hear. Class rolls are one name short- er. These holes are hard to patch and it will take time to do so. It takes a mighty big person to fill all these places, and Bill Hicks was a mighty big person. More than just physically big, he was big about just every- thing. For his football team and school, he gave; he gave his very best. In mixed chorus he not only sang, but was also a leader. HT added three, new, well-qualified coaches to its staff this year. We would all like to think that they had a lot to do with Hewitt ' s victories. But this is not all that makes a victory. First you have to have a good team. Then you need a stadium full of enthusiastic students to raise the morale of the players and a loud rousing band to instill a feeling of excitement in the team and the students. And there must be a troup of pretty cheerleaders to inspire ev- eryone. This makes for a good team. This makes for good school spirit. This is Football - Husky Style. HERBERT O. Hewitt Trussville started its football season with a swell of ex- citement. A long-awaited victory instilled excitement in every stu- dent when the Huskies trounced Leed ' s Green Wave. In the first half, Richard Reaves scored all four touchdowns, and Mike Smith was ready and able to add the needed extra points. An exceptional showing was made by the Husky defense and offense consistently throughout the game. HT met Tarrant on Friday the thirteenth and it was an unlucky day for the Huskies. Tarrant scored twice on runs of nine yards and thirty-five yards. Meanwhile, HT wasn ' t just sitting idly by. In the third quarter, the Huskies really got on the ball and Richard Reaves made a run from the HT forty-yard line to score. The extra point attempt was a failure and Tarrant maintained the score of 14 to 6 till the end. Corner proved to be an upset to HT. Huskie Misfortune: Corner hit HT early m the first quarter with an impressive pass. The extra point, which didn ' t seem important at the time, turned out to be the one which decided the outcome of the game. Later, after struggling to move the ball away from our own goal line, HT punted to Corner. Then Skip Turner intercepted a Corner pass and set up our only touch- down with only 9:35 left to play. The all-deciding extra point try was no good and HT fell to defeat. 116 Vlar ' 68 Season HT went to Mortimer Jordan seeking vengeance for last year ' s score of 13 to 12. HT went out strong early in the game and kept Jordan away from our goal until the second half Meanwhile, during the second quarter, HT marched over the Blue Devils to score on a Perr) ' -to-Turner pass. HT came back into the second half with a nearly infallible defense which threw Jordan for loss after loss, but, with only thirty-nine seconds left in the quarter Jordan snatched an HT fumble and scored. They then went for two and missed. MJ kicked off to HT with only seconds left in the quarter. After a fifteen yard penalty for clipping, HT fumbled on the eighteen-yard line and Mor- timer Jordan recovered. The quarter was over. On the first play in the fourth quarter, Jordan scored. Again the two-point conversion was no good. With only minutes left in the game, HT put together its best drive and scored again, but, once more, the PAT was no good. As the whistle blew, the scoreboard read: HT - 12 . . . Richard Reaves was the big man in the Husky defense with 145 yards in twenty-four carries. Hewitt got off to an early lead after Steve Waid returned the opening kick-off fifty-nine yards to the Huffman twenty-nine yard line. Five plays later. Reaves scored from the five. Smith ' s extra point kick failed. In the second quarter, Huffman moved ahead, but Hewitt came back with a sixty-yard drive capped by a three-yard plunge by Dan Perry. Smith missed again, but Hewitt lead 12 to 7. Huffman again moved ahead in the same period, but the second halt ac- tion wasn ' t over. Hewitt pushed in from seventy-nine yards out with Reaves scoring from the three. Perry passed to Waid for the extra point. In the third quarter, Gordon Marlow intercepted a pass to put HT in business again. Reaves carried it in from 46 yards out and Smith kicked the final Hewitt point of the season. ■F9W r Mack Gives All; Smith Tries for Citadel MITCHELL TOMLINSON NEWTON WILLIAMS MIKE SMITH ARNOLD SELF FRED RODDAM DAN PERRY Ht-ii ' H r ■= i H ' 4] 41 Wm-k MM ' L JIB m H M cf :?- ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' B EDDIE McQUEEN DAVID McCLUSKY ROBERT JOHNSON 118 f Eleaves Leads Pack: Marlow Grabs ' em All DANNY COSBY FREDDIE HAMILTON GORDON MARLOW BRIAN MAY RICHARD REAVES JERRY STEPHENS ROBERT TAYLOR SKIP TLIRNER STEVE WAID 19 Basketball: Most Exciting Year Ever Basketball at Hewitt-Trussville was truly at its best in 68-69. It started with a six game winning streak, showing the Huskies a spectacle they had never seen before. With six wins and one loss, which H-T suf- fered against Shades Valley, Coach Dwight Nor- ris led the fired-up cagers to the Shades Valley Tournament. The Huskies entered the tourna- ment with high hopes of beating Valley this time and going on to place in the tournament, but val- ley drowned these hopes with a close victory over H-T. After suffering this defeat, H-T prepared for the county classic and blazed their way to the county-wide tournament after beating Leeds, Huffman, and Gardendale. In the first game, new Castle knocked the Huskies out of the first two places with a 77-52 victory over H-T. The Huskies being led by Coach Norris were deter- mined to take third place by edging the Berry Bucs 56-55. (continued) Hands off, It ' s mine! ROMANCE LANGUAGE CLUB This is the first year that the French and Spanish Clubs have combined. The main reason for combin- ing these clubs is to interest all students in foreign languages. Membership is based on high grades, character, and interest in school activities; and, of course, a person ' s interest in French or Spanish. The members learn about life in France and Spain and they create an un- derstanding of these nations people. Since the world has become smaller, it is important for all persons to have an understanding of other na- tions and people, which is being accomplished by this club. Membership is open to students who are enrolled in the art classes and students who have taken art and wish to further their art work. Our Art teacher, Mrs. Frauke Brackin, has made it possible for the students at Hewitt to receive many awards from the Alabama State Fair, scholastic exhibits, and the Fine Arts Club ot Birmingham. Y-Teenji The Y-Teen Club is a part of the Y.W.C.A. with whose Method of work and program it is in accord. The primary ob- jective of this club is to provide opportunity for girls to devel- op their leadership potentials and have a sense of personal re- sponsibility for today ' s world. The Y-Teen goals are: to grow as a person, to grow in friendship with people of all religions and nationalities, and to grow in knowledge and love of God. Membership of Y-Teens is open to any girl in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grades providing that she is willing to work for the betterment of this club. Each member is devoted to the service of her school, home, and community. This year some of the Y-Teen services have been: taking candy to the Gateway Mercy Home for the children at Hallow- een, taking Thanksgiving baskets to needy families, and taking jars of candy to the ch ildren at East End Hospital. At Christ- mas the Y-Teens worked in the Goodfellow Store, which supplies toys for needy children, and took Hewitt-Trussville High School ' s Christmas decorations to the Gateway Mercy Home. Also at Christmas, the Y-Teens took gifts to the Chil- dren ' s Ward of the University Hospital and to a needy family. Miss Y Teen JUDY LEATHER WOOD 176 Officers Judv Watkins. Pres .
