Social Studies MRS. MARY-HELEN VICK has taught at Hewitt-Trussville tor eight years. She received her A.B. from S.unford and her M.A. from Alabama College. MR. WALTER STEPHENS graduated from Birmingham-Southern College where he re- ceived his A.B. and M.A. degrees. This is his tenth year at Hewitt-Trussville. World History, American History, Alabama History, Economics, Government, and Communism are vital courses in our educational world today. In these courses we see how man has bettered himself by evaluat- ing his past experiences. This is essentially what social studies means. As we learn of the civilizations of the pas t, we prepare for the future. Thus prepared, we will take our places in society fully qualified to take on responsibilities of a citizen and to participate in a democratic govern- ment. This is the aim of the social studies department here at Hewitt. MISS BRENDA HOLLY attended Jackson- ville State University from which she received her B.S. degree. This is her second year at Hewitt-Trussville; she sponsors Y-Teens. MR. DWIGHT NORRIS attended Austin MR. JOHN F. DYER, sponsor of the Boy ' s Peay State College where he received his B.S. 4-H Club, received his A.B. degree from the degree. This is his second year at Hewitt- University of Alabama. He has taught at Trussville. Hewitt for 14 years. 29

Science MR. ROBERT M. HAYNES is the sponsor of the Red Cross. He has taught at Hewitt- Trussville for 15 years. He attended Auburn University where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees. MR. JIM C. ISRAEL has taught at Hewitt- Trussville for two years. He received his B.S. degree from Samford University. He is the sponsor of the Future Nurses Club. MR. SAM LANDMAN, JR. graduated from Auburn University where he received his B.S. degree. This is his first year at Hewitt- Trussville. MR. FRED P. WHITTAKER, JR. has taught at Hewitt-Trussville for 1 3 years. He received his B.A. degree from Birmingham-Southern and his M.A. from Peabody College. The field of science is growing and expanding con- stantly. Science is the study of cause and effect. The Hewitt-Trussville Science Department teaches the causes and effects of natural-governed phenomena by offering courses in general science, biology, chemistry, physics, and advanced biology. Hewitt-Trussville has some of the most modern equipment and the best trained instructors possible. Th is is to insure the best possible science program anywhere. Advanced biology is for students who wish to take a more extensive and thorough course in biology. This course is for students going into biological or medical fields. 28

French, Spanish, and Latin The Foreign Language Department offers ample opportunities for the students to further their interest and knowledge in languages. French and Spanish students are able to use the language laboratory. In the laboratory they are able to speak the language and then hear themselves through tape recorders. A thorough two-year course in Latin, French, and Spanish is offered at Hewitt-Trussville. MRS. MARY B. DIDCOCT has taught at Hewitt-Trussville for 7 years and she sponsors the French Club. She received her A.B. degree from Samford and her M.A. from the University of Alabama. MISS SOPHIE HEMPHILL is the spon- sor of the Spanish Club. This is her first year at Hewitt-Trussville. She has a B.A. degree from Birmingham Southern. She also attended the University of Madrid. MRS. ROBBIE N. STANLEY has taught at Hewitt-Trussville for 1 1 years. She has an A.B. degree from Carson-New- man. She teaches Latin and English. Band The Hewitt-Trussville marching band is one of the finest anywh ere. From their great performances at football games and pep rallies, to their superb march- ing formations — they keep their listeners wanting to hear and see more. The color-guard also does a fine job. Everyone admires the band and wants to con- gratulate them on their performances and hopes that they will keep up the good work. MR, JOE V. SUMMERS has taught at Hewitt-Trussville for 2 years. He sponsors the band. He has a B.S. and M.A. from the Lfniversity of Alabama. 30
