French, Spanish, Latin MRS. MARY B. D1DC0T has been here 6 years. She attended Howard College and U. of Ala. and has her A.B. and M.A. degrees. She sponsors the French Club. MRS. FRAUKE BRACKIN' was educated in Germany where she received her B.A. degree. She has been at Hewitt 4 years and sponsors the Art Club. The Foreign Language Department has continued to expand to give ample opportunity to students interested in languages. All French and Spanish students have the language laboratory at their use. The lab provides an opportunity for students to speak the language and actually hear themselves through tape recordings. Hewitt offers thorough two-year courses in Latin, French and Spanish. MRS. BETTY GARRETT, a new teacher this year, attended Howard College and U. of Ala. for her A.B. and M.A. degrees. Art and Mechanical MRS. ROBBIE STANLEY ha taught at Hewitt 9 years. She attended George Peabody and Car-son-Newman where die received her A.B. degree. She is sponsor of the Latin Club. MR. WILLIAM H. BOSTICK, sponsor of the Compass Club, has taught at Hewitt 13 years. He has a B.S. degree from Auburn Uni-versity. Drawing Students interested in painting, sculpture, and ceramics arc assisted in expressing their individual talents in the art department. A variety of classes give students a fine chance to use their particular abilities and imagination to great advantage. The mechanical drawing courses offered at Hewitt are very extensive. The first two years give the basic theories of the course. The third year of this course goes into architectural studies. 20

MR. ROBERT T. HITT, sponsor of the Mixed Chorus and choral director, has a B.S. degree from U. of Ala. He has taught here 2 years. Choral The Choral Department at Hewitt is one of the finest anywhere. Anyone interested in music may join the 1 toys’ or girls’ Glee Club. The Mixed Chorus is Hewitt’s l cst voices joined together. To get into this organization, one must audition and l c voted on. Hewitt’s Music Department is active in all county and state competitions and usually comes out with flying colors. This is due to hard work and cooperation by both instructor and students. Library For research and leisure reading, our library has excellent facilities available to all students. Added to these facilities are the many new ! ooks we obtained this year. The librarian. Mrs. Hill, is always ready to assist any student who needs help. Many students help in the library during their free periods. Among some of the jobs they perform are checking out books, seeing that they are relumed, and keeping the l ooks straightened on the shelves. MRS. MARY HILL, Hewitt’s li-hrarian, ha? a B.S. degree from MIm. State College for Women. She sponsors the Library Club. MR. R. H. KENDEIGH attended Colorado State, has a M.A. degree, sponsors the Dance Band, and has been here t years. Band The Hewitt-Trussville Marching Band, under the supervision of Mr. Kendeigh. is one of Hewitt’s main assets. From their heart-warming presentation, to their superb marching formations, to their riotous college rivalry songs—they keep their listeners in constant awe. Everyone at Hewitt is proud of the band, and we hope they will keep up their excellent work in the future years. 19

Mathematics MRS. BETTY THOMAS, sponsor of the Math Club, has been teaching here 1 years. She has a B.A. degree from B'ham-Southem. MRS. NEI L BURGESS, sponsor of the Knitting Club, has taught here 2 years. She has a B.S. degree from Alabama College. MISS RUTH EVELYN PEER. teaching here 6 years, attended Ala. College, New Orleans, and the U. of Ala. where she obtained her A.B., M.R.E. and M.A. degrees. MRS. VELMA SCRUGGS attended Alabama, where she received an A.B. degree. Tennessee, and Howard Colleges. She has taught here 10 years and sponsors the Red Cross Council. Tiie Mathematics Department offers a choice of several courses to the student interested in this field. Offered here are General Math, Plane and Solid Geometry, Algelrra I. II, III, and Trigonometry-. Through varied courses, students of all abilities and interests have been taught mathematical skills and practical logic. Courses taken in suggested sequence establish a firm basis for the more complex problems students will face later. Home Economics By participation in homemaking activities in home economics classes, girls find practical experience for future use. In these classes students become adept at sewing, cooking, and family living. MRS. SUE S. GUNTER, here for 5 years, attended U. of Ala., has a B.S. degree and sponsors the Service Association. 21
