RILEY WHITAKER, He- wilt’s new basketball coach, graduated from Livingston State with a R.S. degree. MR. ROBERT M. HAYNES re- reived a M.S. degree from Auburn. Mr. Haynes has taught at Hewitt 13 years. MR. FRED P. WHITTAKER, JR. attended B’ham-Southerrr and Peabody College where he obtained his IJ..A. and M.A. degrees. He has taught here 10 years. MISS JANICE HYDE, a new teacher, graduated from R'Ham-Southern where she received a B.A. degree. She sponsors the Future Nurses. Science Today science is one of the most important courses offered to students. This field is growing and developing constantly. The Science Department has the utmost in modem equipment and the best in instructors. Courses offered are General Science. Biology. Chemistry. Physics, and Advanced Biology. The Advanced Biology is something new. It is a more extensive and thorough research program. This is a wide-open opportunity for the planning of future biological or medical fields. 18

Physical Education Participation in competitive sport , responsible conduct. and health fitness are the purposes of physical education. The Physical Education Department stresses good sportsmanship and health through a well-rounded program of activities. Each student who has a special interest in Physical Education can take part in supervising activities hy being an assistant. Intramural sports enable members of the athletic department to participate in sport events on » friendly basis. COACH I.ARRY CORF, is an- other of our new roaches this year. MISS MARY ANN BOST. a new teacher, has a B.A. degree in Education. She sponsors the Girls’ Athletic Club. MRS. PAT SMITH, sponsor of the Sr. Cheerleaders, has taught here 2 years. She received a B.S. degree from Howard College.

MR. ROBERT T. HITT, sponsor of the Mixed Chorus and choral director, has a B.S. degree from U. of Ala. He has taught here 2 years. Choral The Choral Department at Hewitt is one of the finest anywhere. Anyone interested in music may join the 1 toys’ or girls’ Glee Club. The Mixed Chorus is Hewitt’s l cst voices joined together. To get into this organization, one must audition and l c voted on. Hewitt’s Music Department is active in all county and state competitions and usually comes out with flying colors. This is due to hard work and cooperation by both instructor and students. Library For research and leisure reading, our library has excellent facilities available to all students. Added to these facilities are the many new ! ooks we obtained this year. The librarian. Mrs. Hill, is always ready to assist any student who needs help. Many students help in the library during their free periods. Among some of the jobs they perform are checking out books, seeing that they are relumed, and keeping the l ooks straightened on the shelves. MRS. MARY HILL, Hewitt’s li-hrarian, ha? a B.S. degree from MIm. State College for Women. She sponsors the Library Club. MR. R. H. KENDEIGH attended Colorado State, has a M.A. degree, sponsors the Dance Band, and has been here t years. Band The Hewitt-Trussville Marching Band, under the supervision of Mr. Kendeigh. is one of Hewitt’s main assets. From their heart-warming presentation, to their superb marching formations, to their riotous college rivalry songs—they keep their listeners in constant awe. Everyone at Hewitt is proud of the band, and we hope they will keep up their excellent work in the future years. 19
