HARRY ROOSEVELT WILSON ROOSEVELT TRUMAN 'F' The Square Deal The New Freedom The New Dea1 The Fair Deal 4 ebicafion To Mr. Joel Hewitt Burgess Throughout the history of the American Republic, the people have chosen from among themselves persons with outstanding social traits whom they could use in places of leadership. These men, whether village school masters or national Presidents, have played a vital part in the development of our great American tradition. When men who are chosen for these places prove themselves to be faithful to their charges and responsibilities, it is with pride that those who follow salute them. In this spirit, the Annual Staff dedicates the 1950 MEMENTO to- our principal, who, even in his first year of service to us, has demonstrated qualities worthy of the highest calling of man-LEADERSHIP. Deaicafion MR.JOEL HEWITT BURGESS mfg it ,mi -way 7-Le Genfufz Our grandparents ushered in the twentieth century under stars of peace that they might understandably expect to shine on a hundred years of uninterrupted progress. But our parents have lived through two world wars that still rever- berate with perplexity for every nation and race. Today we stand at the half-way mark of the century, conditioned by the after- math of these wars, their problems unsolved. None of the questions that con- front our generation has a facile answer. Too inexperienced to make compre- hensive suggestions, we yet modestly and tentatively offer a few things as our contributions. Ours is the hope of youth and the courage of the strong. Ours, the vision of the idealist joined with the determination of the resolute. We dare to believe in a better day for all mankind if the students in our school and the hundreds of thousands like us are prepared to think clearly, sacrifice as necessary, and work unremittingly for the common good. The foundation for our endeavors has been laid in Hewitt High School. We shall repay the teachings of our alma mater by carrying her ideals over into the realm of practical and devoted citizenship. By the way that we resolve the diffi- cluties of 1950 and the decades to follow will the twenty first century be de- termined. In this consciousness, we pledge the mid-century, and look forward to the stars of peace that shall shine in serenity when we, having lived our three score and ten, shall welcome in the year 2000. Education, the hope of youth, youth, the hope of democracy: democracy, the hope of the world. ,1 S-a ,, -- ,,+ 1 f -,-'--- If 1 .'.- lg 5' N ,Z -ks If -A V f ' SEX , -'Jig f - Hi- L- , L- 'lv' ,2..41- ' ! :l1 if'i-jl6i- F NFTE tg ' '!r xl? GRACE ROBXSON Sen m I Yourself Choic ' e, ' ERS mid-Genfuty As the school bells ring at the beginning of 1950 we stand at the mid point of the century, looking back to its beginningg looking forward to its end, wondering, fearing, hoping. Change has been the dominant characteristic of the last fifty years. Ordinary living is much easier and more varied today than in 1900. Technological develop- ment has cut away the miles and brought us far closer to Europe and Asia than were New York and San Francisco fifty years ago. It has shortened working hours and given men various means of enjoying this new leisureg it has cut the drudgery of housework and freed women to take their places as citizens in today's world. Vastly expanded facilities have brought high school education within the reach of all classes. Medical advances have added about twelve years to the average life expectancy of the high school Freshman and have done much to alleviate pain and suffering. An awakened social consciousness has made us more aware of the value of a human life and has given us new respect for the individual. But most marked of all is the changed position of our country in the world. Two world wars and the atomic bomb have pushed us off our rock of isolation, changed our smug superiority to European conflicts, and elevated our country to the foremost posi- tion among all nations. In spite of all this progress, we teenagers find much to criticize in the national and international affairs of the last half century. Soon the responsibility of the world leadership will be thrust upon us and we shall discover that no one is a per- fect seer, able to predict the result of word or deed. If we wish to see the world move toward the more perfect civilization of which we dream, we must keep alive our youthful ambitions, our enthusiasm and will to do as we assume the respon- sibility of adult life and enter into full citizenship. Q Let us look for a moment to the year 2000--end of a century. Although it seems lost in the future, most of us will be alive then to account for our steward- ship. What will the record be? Ifthe New Year' s bells of 2000 are--like the bells of Tennyson--to ring out the oldg the feuds of rich and poorg the centuries of warg if they are to ring in the new: the thousands years of peace, redress to all man- kind, the valiant man with larger heart and kindlier hand, we young people must begin to forge those bells now. In the scale of the destinies, brawn will never weigh so much as brain. 'FC . F65 iff ,Q Olillll ul.. .- 545+ 97155 AVEKJ 'fe-u.. 0 Aug, 1-.. 5 0 HUKIVG F U A! Q.. .- ff' KR ,umm LH 56610 A . oy. G 71.16.42 To 'Ilia '49 Huskies The 1949 Huskies- -a team of big little football players--a mighty little team- -a team that didn't win many games by score but morally they won them all. The '49 Huskies were probably the fightingest little team that ever came out of Hewitt. They had two things that make any kind of team complete--the fight and will to win. Yes, that's what made the '49 Huskies, that and forty boys who wanted to play football. Last, and by no means least, the team had two of the best coaches ever to be at Hewitt--Mr. Jim Owen and Mr. Paul Wills. They taught the Huskies what they knew and they stood by the team when times were good or bad. Yes, these things made the fighting '49 Huskies. Let's take a look back over the '49 football season at Hewitt. The first game of the year with Mortimer Jordan was probably the biggest and best game of the year since it was the first game to be played in the new stadium. The Huskies rolled over the Blues by the score of 25-6. This was Hewitt's greatest night in football. The second game was lost to Tarrant High School by a score of 13-0 but victory was ours in the next game, the Huskies winningover Leedsby a score of 14-6. For the next three games the team was subject to defeat, losing to Fairfield 19-0, to Jones Valley at Powderly 13-0,and to McAdory 13-Q, this being the first defeat for the Huskies in their new stadium. At the homecoming game The Huskies rolled over Warrior by a score of 13-0. This was a great night for the team. In the eighth game of the season, the Minor High School handed the Huskies their worst defeat of the season--26-0. For the next game John Carroll High of Birmingham came to Trussville and beat the Huskies by a score of only 7-Og whereas they were supposed to beat by at least 20 points. For the last game of the season the Huskies traveled to Oneonta to play Blount County High School on Thanksgiving and ended the season with a score of 19-0 in favor of the opposing team. The '49 Huskies--the fightingest big little team to ever come out of Hewitt- -will never be forgotten. It takes courage to win and a good sport to lose. . V ef BEA U IIZESW ,,ff4,, 0 jf?
