ff .- Y '..h' all., I l l 'Y' I I l COMMANDING OFFICER Commander George G. Galyo, USN, was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduating, he attended the Surface Warfare Officers School, followed by an assignment to the USS JOHN HANCOCK CDD 9815 as First Lieutenant and than CIC Officer. While assigned to USS HANCOCK he deployed to the Mediterranean, North Atlantic, and Persian Gulf. Upon completion of his first sea tour, he attended the Naval Post Graduate School where he graduated with distinction, and earned a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with a sub-specialty in Weapons Technology. After a year in the Nuclear Power School pipeline he reported to USS VIRGINIA CCGN 385 as Electrical Officer. During his tour USS VIRGINIA deployed to the Mediterranean, won the Battle EH and Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy. Additionally, he concurrently served three months as Chief Engineer on USS STUMP CDD 9785 during their Mediterranean and Persian Gulf deployment. Following Department Head School, he reported as Combat Systems Officer on USS ARTHUR W. RADFORD CDD 9685 where he completed the maj or conversion to VLS, SQQ-89, Outboard II, and conducted the significant certification and work-up cycle for deployment. Then he was assigned as Engineering Officer onboard USS TEXAS CCGN 395 for her major Refueling Overhaul. After his Department Head tours, he attended the Marine Corps Command and Staff College where he graduated with distinction. He was subsequently assigned to USS TICONDEROGA CCG 475 as Executive Officer. During his tour TICO deployed to the Mediterranean, and eamed her first Battle Efficiency En and the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy. His next shore assignment was Officer in Charge of the Atlantic Fleet Surface Nuclear Propulsion Mobile Training Team, followed by assignment to OPNAV N80 staff as Head Maintenance Analyst in N avyls Programming Division. Commander Galyo is authorized to wear the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy Achievement Medal, and various Service awards. Commander Galyo is married to the former Susan Lynn Salter of Charleston, South Carolina. They have three children, Michelle, George Gary, and Gail. CAPTAIN WISHES HE WAS A WOG AGAIN ....... He attended parochial schools in the Archdiocese of Washington and is a graduate of Gonzaga College High School. He holds a BA degree from Fordham University in New York fl975j. Commander Healey was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in September of 1978. His first ship tour was as CIC officer aboard USS AUSTIN CLPD-43. While on AUSTIN the ship was part of contingency rescue operations for the 1980 Iranian Hostage Crisis. In July 1981 he reported as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and plankowner of USS GALLERY CFFG-265. Following her commissioning, GALLERY operated in the eastern Pacific in and around El Salvador and Nicaragua providing surveillance support to National Command Authorities. In November 1983, CDR Healey reported to the United States Naval Academy as an instructor of Naval Science. He worked with USNA classes 1986 through 1990. After completion of SWOS Department Head School in December 1988, CDR Healey reported to USS O'BANNON QDD-9875 as Combat Systems Officer. While aboard, the ship operated in the Arabian Gulf under COMIDEASTFOR and in Sixth and Second Fleets. In August 1988 CDR Healey transferred to the staff of Commander, Destroyer Squadron Four. As staff Combat Systems Officer he facilitated Type Commander Readiness issues, Combat Systems Assessments, IN SURVS, and Cruise Missile Qualifications for the 14 ships of the Squardron. In September 1989, CDR Healey was the Command Duty Officer during Hurricane Hugo in Charleston, SC. He supervised sortie operations, directed security preparations and disaster assistance. Following the hurricane, his harbor survey work was instrumental in reopening the port. In March of 1990 CDR Healey reported to the Naval War College in Newport, RI, where he received an MA in National Security Affairs. He also holds an MA in Intemational Relations from Salve Regina University. CDR Healey served as Executive Officer of USS CALLAGHAN CDD-9945 from October 1991 through April 1993. During this period CALLAGHAN conducted an interoperability exercise with every numbered Fleet, circumnavigating the globe. The ship operated extensively in the Araabian Gulf and performed contingency operations within Iranian territorial waters which re-established the Western Traffic Separation Scheme in the Strait of Hormuz for the U.S. Forces. In May 1993, CDR Healey reported to the Officer of the Chief of Naval Operations. He developed long range programs plans and performed warfighting assessment for the Direct, Expeditionary Warfare Division CN85j. CDR Healey assumed command of USS MERRILL CDD 9765 in Hong Kong Harbor on 7 September, 1997, while the ship was deployed with the USS CONSTELLATION Battle Group. On 1 May 1998, CDR Healey assumed Command of USS HEWITT CDD966j. CDR Healey's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal Ctwo gold starsj, the Navy Commendation Medal fone gold starj, and the Navy Achievement Medal Cone gold starj, as well as various service and campaign Medals. CDR Healey is married to the former Lynne Marie Orlowski of New Jersey. Mrs. Healey is a teacher with an MA in Education.
