The football season was off to a smashing start when Heuvelton defeated Parishville with a score of 19-13. Five games were played in all. The most exciting was the Heuvelton-Lisbon game which re- sulted in a tied C20-205 score. Although there were no official spectator buses, many students found other means of transportation and were present at the games to offer team support. The changing of the name to The Bulldog Bulletin, the including of more interesting material, and the borrowing of new ideas from other schools: all have helped to makeThe Bulldgg a better and more informative newspaper. However, editors Rosella Todd and Cheryl Stiles admit that much remains to be done and hope that next year's staff continues, under the HOLE direction of Mrs. Smithers and Mr. Mushtare, to improve The Bulldog Bulletin and accomplishes its goal of informing and entertaining the students at Heuvelton Central. The National Honor Society fopposite: topl, whose membership is limited to students with an 85 or better Regents average, met again this year with a larger membership than ever. This can be taken as active evidence of the growing emphasis on scholarship at Heuvelton Central. The Student, Council Copposite: bottoml, for years a dead organization was reactivated this year with an impressive membership. Under the guidance of Mr. Kinne, the Council assumed the difficult and delicate task of re- presenting the students of Heuvelton Central. F. H. A. This year the F.H.A. had a total of MS members. Twenty-five of these were new members and were initiated in October. Our officers this year were as follows: President, Beverly Conantg Vice President, Nancy Ferrisg Secretary, Sonja Biceg Treasurer, Pat Lanctog Newspaper Reporter, Linda Blanceg Woodwardg and Student Council Representative, In November we attended the Fall Rally at Hammond Central School. Q Qu- Al- Contrary to the popular belief, agriculture offers truly unlimited op portunities for employment in the United States and in fact all over the world today. It is true that the number of farms is steadily declining' This, however, is to be expected as our farmers become more and more efficient through the use of labor-saving farm machinery, improved tillage practices, better varieties of crops and profitable farm management. While the number of persons who earn their living from farming is on the decline, the total number is increasing. During the past year the members judged at the judging contests and made Delhi Dairy Judging Tour, in Iowa, and the National of people needed in the field of agriculture the Heuvelton FFA has been very active. Struggling with slimy glue that just won't stick. Almost catching pneumonia because the glue smells so much you have to open windows. Nearly chopping off fingers in the paper slicer in order to trim paper to that last sixteenth of an inch. Inky typewriter ribbons that smear the copy you've worked on for an hour. Pictures which need to be enlarged in order to be used and therefore set production back weeks. fc 1'c 'ic Our yearbook means: Having four staff members show up for meetings. Money problems. Pleading with the Senior Class to get their baby pictures in. Constant setbacks and disappointments.....UUhat do you mean the photographs can't make it?.....NDon't tell me this pic- ture is too big for the page or I'll screamin It means wondering if our yearbook will ever see production. And yet would we change places with anyone who has not had this experience? Not a chance! All we hope is that through our blood, sweat and tears we have produced a yearbook which will serve as a pic- torial record of the year 1963-64 in the years to come 'I v' - ss' 1 HQ- ,H , , A 91 WTYW - Q :, ,E 1, it Fi fi' . US All America loves to sing, and Heuvelton is no exception. The year 1963-eh was a busy one for chorus members-busy, different, and fun. Membership in chorus rose to about 80, an all-time high, as old and new members poured into the cafeteria to participate in rehear- sals. In October we elected chorus officers: President, Bill Jenk- issong Vice President, Joan Davisg Secretary-Treasurer, Verna Jean Thornhillg Student Council Representative, Nancy Ferris. we'd hardly finished elections and Christmas was upon us. Gaily we plunged into our Yuletide music, and by concert time we were pre- pared and confident--well, as confident as our nervousness would allow. Chorus sang the beautiful nChildren's Prayern accompanied by band, the first time such an attempt has been made. And for the first time that year, we sang on the stage. At every rehearsal, Mrs. Thornhill put chorus through a certain routine designed to improve and strengthen our singing. This was the first time chorus had come into contact with vocal technic, and need- less to say there were grumbles and mutters every time Mrs. Thorn- hill told us to stand up and get some elbow room. KNO doubt people would find it strange to see eighty students flapping their arms about like birds, but it worked as far as our singing was concerned.3 Right after Christmas we tackled new music, and things zoomed on to an end. Valley League, spring concert, and graduation would be nextg then sum er, then another school year. Yes, it certainly was a busy year--busy, different, and fun. CHOIR S e people refer to it as 'Select Chorus'. Others call it 'Special Chorus' or WThe Heuveltonesn. Anyway, it denotes a group of highschool students who sing because they like to, and like to because it gives pleasure to people. The members themselves consider it pretty special, because it not only is a fine singing group, but a lot of fun, too. The rehearsals are held at night and at first glance one would mistake it for a social gathering. The girls come dressed innslacks and sweaters, and the boys come with an air of relief that homework - unfinished, of course - is left at home. Everyone enjoys joking with the others until Mrs. Thornhill says that it's time to settle down and work. Even when the music is especially difficult and it's rough going, the atmosphere remains relaxed and informal. This is a welcome situation, since everyone sings better if they are not under pressure. ' As its name implies, chorus is composed of selected students who have been tested both privately and in highschool chorus by Mrs. Thornhill. Thus, naturally, it is quite an honor to be a member. Most of them have gone to Valley League, and a few have gone to the Sectional AllfState Music Festival at Potsdam. Chorus is especially proud of Ronnie Simmons, who sang in All-State Chorus. Despite the impression I may have given of students merely having a good time at rehearsals, the members do work hard on their music. Perhaps the rehearsals are so much fun because everyone is doing what he enjoys -- singing. At any rate, when the curtain goes up, at either the Christmas, Spring, or Graduation Concert, and the audience sees a very impressive group of robed students, and listens to a fine program of well-sung music, Heuvelton can't help but be proud of Special Chorus, and the me bers can't help but be proud that they are in it.
