We hope that it will serve as a guide and inspiration to suc- ceeding classes. In years to come we know it will bring back many memories of the happy and eventful days which we had at H.C.S. 3 DEDICATION Miss Lourena SOVIE We, the class of I960, wish to dedicate our year- book to Mis3 Lourena Sovie in sincere appreciation of her forty-three years of ministering to the demands of young minds. Miss Sovie graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Ogdensburg, N.Y., and then attended Ogdensburg Training School. After teaching for five years, she attended Potsdam Normal School. It is only just that we extend this expression of our respect and gratitude for her many faithful years of kind and patient teaching. TO THE CLASS OP i960 Your graduation from school brings to an end the first phase of your education. These past years in school have served as an orientation period to everyday life situations. As students developing satisfaction through accomplishment of school tasks you have been laying the groundwork for the same sense of accomplishment that may be a lasting lifetime experience in your chosen vocations. Achieving happiness and contentment in our way of liv- ing is a matter of concern for each of you. If in your approach to your particular job you can see it as it affects what one does, whom one knows and often how one thinks you can make a happier way of life. I wish to congratulate all of you on your fine achieve- ments and for this excellent Heuveltonian . In future years when you turn back through these pages I hope It will bring back fond memories. I, Aubrey Duvall, will a spare tank of gas to Harry Woodside for those nights when it runs out. I, Janet Goodison, will my ability to get in trouble to Delberta Moore and Kathy Van Ornum in hopes that they graduate before they're kicked out. I, Margaret Matthews, will my smoking in the basement ability to Mr. Cousineau. I, Norma McDonald, will my dark hair to Laura Simmons so she won't have to bleach hers anymore. Ij Sharon Ormsbee, will the memory of my smiling face to Mr. Sellis and my appreciation of finer music to Mr. Cousineau. I, Irene Woodside, will a Charles Atlas course on building better muscles to Coach Conklin. I, Robert Rice, will my flirting ability to whoever may need it. I, William Wright, leave Beethoven's Unfinished Fifth to David Reynolds. I, Ronald Ritchie, will my working ability and job as foreman in the cafeteria to that lazy Mark Hanna. I, Nancy Bice, as I am taking my talents—???--with me, can only leave my connections with Denny's Gas Station to those who have car trouble. I, Lawrence Todd, leave my fiendish ability to get in Mr. Cousineau's hair (or what there is left of it) to David Todd. I, Alfred Nichols, will to Betty Rounds my first speeding ticket, one no parking sign, two safety zone signs, and a policeman's whistle. I, Peggy Boyesen, will those cozy, comfortable, elite bus rides to Linda Paquette. I, Alberta Dominie, leave my ability to pass American History tests to Maureen Gooshaw. WITNESSES: Mr. Carbol Mr, Hanagan SIGNED: Michele Moore John Chambers, Ed. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In September of 1956, we embarked 'on our high school careers. Feeling quite self-important, we chose our majors, began to have class meetings and join clubs. We elected as officers for our first year John Chambers, presi- dent; Gilbert Bishop, vice-president; Irene Woodside, secretary; and Roger Morgan, treasurer. Our advisor was Miss Eleanor Rolfe. After scattering for the summer, we returned to H.C.S. the next September to begin the first of cur three years in Homeroom 21. This year we were Soph- omores and old pros . We were capably guided through this year by Alfred Nichols, president; Marilyn Parish, vice-president; Helen Winters, secretary; and Larry Todd, treasurer; and Mr. James as our advisor. We began to inflate our treasury this year by food aales and selling beanies in the school colors. The year was ended with a gala picnic at Lazy River, sharing the expenses with the Freshmen. In September of ’58 we drifted back as knowledgeable and experienced upperclassmen. Our first major activity was choosing our class rings, which we did in November. We lost our class president, Helen Winters, to Lisbon Central, so vice-president Eva Backus stepped in and fulfilled the responsi- bility capably, aided by newly-elected vice-president Terry Ferris, secretary Karen Badger and treasurer Alfred Nichols. Of course, our major project for the year was our prom which took place on May 15th. Naturally we had to expand our treasury to meet the expenses of this project and so we undertook a series of dances, food sales and dinners, aided and abetted by our advisors, Mr. Shannon and Mr. Chisholm. Much time and effort was expended to make our Blue Hawaii a big success and finally it was ready-----complete with grass huts I Now, with fond memories of the last three years, we have toiled as sophis- ticated and world-weary Seniors. We are prepared to set the world aflame------- next year, that is. We had three large projects this year; our yearbook. Winter Carnival and our New York trip. We were ably assisted with our year- book by Mr. Carbol and Mr. Hanagan. Our first order of business was to elect our officers. The results were: Terry Ferris, president; Eva Backus, vice- president; Nancy Bice, secretary; and Alfred Nichols and Larry Todd, co-treas- urers; and Mr. Cousineau and Mr. LaRock, advisors. During the first semester we had a frantic round of money-making activities but right after Christmas we began preparing for our Winter Carnival, which was held the second week of February. We chose Winter Wonderland as our theme and carried it out with story book characters. The carnival lasted four days. We had a record hop, supper, variety show and the grand ball. It was a tremendous success and we had a lot of fun putting it on. During Easter vacation we made the long-awaited trip to New York. This was a thrill which we will not soon forget. We saw Radio City Music Hall, the Statue of Liberty, the U.N. Building, Broadway and all the other famous points of interest. Finally the great day came—June 27th, the day of our graduation. We greeted this day with mingled emotion, for, although the beginning of many wonderful years, it marked the end of our days as carefree children. We now had to face trhe world as adults. , . •••'' . KIO (STUDENT COUNCIL) The Junior Class has enjoyed a very happy and prosperous year. Although our money-making projects were somewhat limited, we managed to accumulate a nice profit on the sale of Christmas cards and refreshments at ball games. One of the biggest thrills of the year was ordering and receiving our class rings. The class voted unanimously for the same style ring. Our year ended in a blaze of glory with the annual Junior Prom on May 20. Our theme, KISMET , was beautifully executed in the decorations for the prom. Joseph Calapari's Orchestra played divinely; the entire evening was just per- fect. We are looking forward to the day when we will become seniors. We are ready to assume all the work and prerogatives that each senior class enjoys. Row 1 C_ Glidden, B. Rounds, B. Burcume, N. Willard, C. Sprowls, C. Wilson, L. Simmons, H. Howes. We finished the season in the mud and rain against a good Lisbon Central School team winning by the narrow margin of 7-6. With a good nucleus returning next fall we expect better results during that season. Row l: J. chambers, T. Ferris, B. Nichols, K. Tuggey, P. McAllister, B. Rice Row 2: A. Duvall, L. Armstrong, B. The concert con- sisted of a variety of band selections. This year's band has been a very select organization and we now have ipO members compared to 20 last year. The year's activities were compledtd with the Memorial Day parade, the Music Department banquet. Baccalaureate and the Senior Graduation. DANCE BAND MUSIC DEPARTMENT Officers Seated t V.
