A homemaking department to give the girls the same opportunity that the agriculture department was giving to the boys was installed in 19 -0. The present modern structure of steel, brick and glass was opened to students of the district in 1953. As enrollments increased rapidly, a large wing to the existing building was added and the elementary grades moved_into the shining, beautiful addition in 1958. The dedication of our beautiful new school building will take place in the spring of 1959. A sesquicentennial ob- servance, depicting the progress of ed- ucation in our community during the past 150 years, will be a source of pride to the inhabitants of the Heuvelton school district. The student body, too, is deeply grateful for all the opportuni- ties offered to them that were not even envisioned in 1809Ā With what astonishment and amazement the students who en- tered the small log-cabin school in 1809 would gaze at the shin- ing school and modern facilities that are offered to the village students in 19591 A stroll through spacious classrooms, modern trade school unit, at- tractive homemaking apartment, commodious gymnasium, and up-to- the-minute science laboratory would be an almost unbelievable experience to students who gath- ered around a pot-bellied stove and laboriously wrote with chalk on a small slate. In the winter of I808-I809 the first school in this community was opened in a log cabin near the site of the present building. Dyer Badger was the teacher, and classes were conducted only during the winter months. The present site was sold to the district in 1822 by Jacob Vanden Heuvel, a wealthy landowner. A stone building was erected in 1825. The stone building was torn down and a large wooden structure was erected in 187UĀ« As the need arose, this build- ing was remodeled to keep pace with the ever increasing student body. The library, laboratory, office, and high school classes eventually were placed on the second floor while the grade school classes convened on the first floor. In 1935 an agriculture wing was built, and a full time agriculture teacher was hired. In 1938 a full time music teacher was added to the teaching PKfflfl? • IS m 1 -; •' i t . vgf-ytw i r ♦ aĀ v Tfssfiwsia ā– -• V K• i.V ! • I v • V :.%;7i ?f..4 _ -f JJm Miration Mr. Donald Cousineau Mr. Donald Cousineau came to Heuvelton Central School in the fall of 1955Ā He has been our class advisor during our freshman, sophomore, and senior years. Prom our lofty perch we gazed condescendingly up- on the seventh end eighth graders. We were now bona fide members of the high school student body and we were determined to rise and shine. Our first fund-raising projects, selling greeting cards and pens, were successful and our treasury began to grow. To celebrate the conclu- sion of the freshmen year, our class had a wonder ful picnic at Postwood Park. Our officers for th yesr were: Judy Ketcham, president; Sally Cutwey, vice-president; Kathleen Davis, secretary; Sheila Sprowls, treasurer; Mr. Donald Cousineau, advisor Now we were wise end experienced sophomore In addition to our demanding school studies, we realized we would have to begin raising money in earnest if we wished a senior trip to materialize We hustled all yeer selling candy and ice cream at football, baseball, and basketball games. Our advisor occasionally wondered of we were eating the profits ourselves as our financial balance at the end of the year was not what we had anticipated. A picnic at Lazy River in June terminated our activities for the sophomore year. Officers for the yeer were: Judy Ketcham, president; Lenore Flynn, vice-president; Kathleen Davis, secretary; Mary Witherell, treasurer; Mr. Cousineau, advisor. Our junior year was packed with busy ictivities of all kinds. First of ell, we selected our high school rings! Every member of the class badgered our long-suffering secretary until the rings arrived, and then we proudly strutted throughout the halls with our hands held aloft so that everyone could admire the gleaming circlets of gold. We again sold candy at basketball games, conducted many successful food sales, and worked like beavers to raise money through community suppers. In May, our fabulous Junior Prom took place. To carry out the theme, How Deep Is the Ocean , we painted fantastic and colorful denizens of the sea on large well murals. The enchanting evening was climaxed by the crowning of Roger Ferris and Carol Browning as King and Queen of the prom. Our class officers were: Nora Sauter, president; Kathleen bsvis, vice-president; Rita Smithers, secretary; Kathleen Havens, treasurer; Mrs. Kuchler and Mr. Russell, advisors. Exciting end rewarding experiences filled our days as seniors. Senior officers elected were: Kathleen Davis, president; Bernsrd Finley, vice-president; Sheila Sprowls, secretary; Kathleen Havens, treasurer; Mr. Cousineau end Mrs. Kuchler, advisors. Our biggest task of the year was the publishing of The Heuveltonian , the school yearbook. With Mrs. Hendee as advisor, we labored long and hard, and we finally sent the completed pages to the publisher. The annuel Winter Carnival, held in February, was a mammoth success. Why, we even managed to secure two television per- sonalities to crown Queen Judy Ketcham and King Bernard Finley! With these activities completed, we began preparations for our trip to Washington, D. C., during our Easter vaca- tion. A tour of the Supreme Court, Senate, end House of Representatives filled us with respect for our government officials. Visits to the Mellon Art Gallery, Smithsonian Insti- tute, and Museum of Natural History made us more deeply appreciative of our culture and heritage. June 23 and graduation day at lest ar- rived! Although we were anxious to begin new experiences, we all realized that the four challenging end rewarding yesrs spent at the Heuvelton Central School will be remembered and cherished by all of us. jllflllUUl MU, II 1 I IV' (Elas0 ijtetarg Row 1: M.A. Brecy, B. How important we felt the day the rings ar- rived and the whole school ad- mired our choice! To raise enough money for our class projects, we scur- ried around town selling greeting cards and novelties. In May, the annual Junior Prom took place. Our theme, Blue Hawaii was beautifully exe- cuted, and the entire student body complimented us. In a more serious vein, we all began contemplating our future careers, and many of us made what may prove to be the most important deci- sions of our lives. It was truly a momentous year! Row 1: A. In addition to a heavy schedule of school subjects, we enthusiastically participat- ed in all school activities. To raise money for our antic- pated senior trip to Washing- ton, we sold greeting cards and candy, held several suc- cessful food sales, and solic- ited donations for a skating doll. As a result of these business ventures, our treas- ury balance was considerably improved. After a success- ful sophomore year, we are looking forward eagerly to °ur junior year. We have participated in all school activities. Many of our class members take part in band, chorus, sports, cheei leading, FFA, FHA, and other organizations. During the Winter Carnival, which was sponsored by the senior classj we were justifiably elated when our ice statue of Thumpei the Disney rabbit, won first prize!
