Shortly after his parents received the notice of his death, this poem arrived. It was written by one of the men who served with him at the time of his death. Seven fleeting months! That's all the time they gave you, lady Seven precious months from out your 21 bright years, Seven months that found you in the garb of battle cladg Seven months of marching, drills and blood and sweat and tears. Seven months from Heuvelton to some- thing called Pau-golg Seven months from a peaceful town to a bitter rendezvous: Seven months to train and fight and answer Freedom's cally Seven months of sacrifice for what was right and true. Seven winging months! That's all the time it took you, lad, To brave Korea's seething hell and find your Destinyg Seven months of hopes and fears and giving all you had To break a tyrant's greedy grip and set a country free. Seven months: And now you sleep in your own native land, Private, First Class Breckenridge- such was the rank you had: But seven centuries from now when heroes' deeds are scanned You'll rank not only first class but among the highest, lad.
