'477Z Congratulations to the Annual Staff, and Senior Class for the fine contribution you have made to the Heuck's Retreat High School for the year 1953-l95LL. You have shown by your efforts that you can work with others in accomplishing a given task. I am sure that you take pride in having an opportunity to leave something tangible to your Alma Mater. World tension has increased the number and kinds of educational opportunities open to young men and women. Existing conditions which prevail in religion, morals, manners, economics, politics and other human relationships challenge the best efforts of home- makers, teachers, citizens, and church people. Your demonstrated intellectual culture, your participation in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, your record of cooperation with students and teachers, your high standards in morals and manners, and your unselfish concern for the welfare of others, revealed many times during this session, qualify you to play many important roles in the civilization of your generation. Your Alma Mater has great faith in you and your potentialities for good in a world sorely in need of the traits of character and of the standard of morals and manners which you have so graciously exemplified throughout your high school career. Sincerely yours, 53. 2f,'4L.z':-M.. C. V. Linton, Supt. ,I ? ,155 ez ,z if-4:21, if STI' if '14 ,f K 'F WH? 7 4' ,., lo, . .I . 49 , x Jxxxl f K f ,rio moto AvAuLAsLe ? MR. C. V. I shall endeavor to unfold this History to you in a brief but pleasant manner, hoping to bring you the most happy moments and to the Histaian of some future date who will have to write the greater deeds of our Seniors, the very best to you. It was the latter part of August 1941 when fifteen brilliant but educable children bounced in the door of dear Ole Heuck's and landed at the feet of Mrs. Addienell Crawford, much was to be learned by students and teachers. The Brst years of our school life was bright and acdveg those added to our able list of veterans as our early teachers were: First, Mrs. Addienell Crawfordg Second and Third, Mrs. L. L. Bullardg Fourth, Mrs. T. I. Rutledge: Fifth. Mrs. D. B. Draneg Sixth and Seventh, Miss Frankie Nell Horton. After much moving around we settled down in the fifth grade with our present class with few exceptions. Those winning the eighth grade medals were, Edouida Barry and Luther Bullard. Mr. Hugh V. Britt was our sponsor in that grade. In 1949 a battle worn little group of students entered the year that begin our high school days. Our president was Edouida Barry and our candidate, Bobbie Jean Case, was crowned Miss Heuck's Retreat. Also Bobby Tolar came back to tu from Mobile, Ala. Bobby was our second addition since Theda Carlisle who came to us in the eighth. The tend: grade provided us with another great shock. Edith Thames became Mrs. Thomas Earl I-lonea, thus we lost one more. Again our President was Edouida Barry and Bobby Jean Case wae the crown for Miss Heuck's another year. Theda Carlisle won the Athletic award and Edouida Barry the History award for that year. Our Junior year was most exciting. Mike Oberschmidt was our President. Those starring in the Who's who were: Edouida Barry, Betty Jo Flowers, Jerry White. Eugene Lee, Mike Overschrnidt, Peggy Kavanaugh and Bobbie Jean Case. Those leaving were Peggy Kavanaugh and getting married Bobbie Jean Case. Our play, 'The Able Miss Cain under direction of Mrs. H. H. Ward was a big hit. Our biggest event of the year was the entertaining of the Seniors with a picnic at Percy Quinn State Park. In 1953 an humble little group entered the twelfth grade minus Mike Ober- schmidt who deserted us to go to Co-Lin, but Co-Lin in turn aided us in helping us gain Srirley Coker, and Eugene Lee dropped out. Our President is Luther Bullard and those in the Who's Who are Betty Io Flowers, Edouida Barry, Theda Carlisle, Bobby Tolar, Luther Bullard, Dorothy Callendar, Jerry White and Slirley Coker. Mrs. W. P. Evans directed our play, Professor, l-low Could You! and again we were a big hitl Dorothy Callendar again captured the crown of Miss Heuck's. We have oodles of plans fm graduation, parties and trip to Florida. l444?'w It's a beautiful April morning. the air is sweet and clean, the year is 1970. Well, what's up? Oh, the class of '54 is having a wonderful reunion and who is the first to speak: of course our Senior Class President, now Dr. L. S. Bullard. He is in top health, a bit plump but the same ole Luke. He's even Papa, three times so. Our attentions are turned now as another distinguished Gentleman enters. It's Jerry White, done well he has. He is a big timber man, has a mansion and owns 500 acres of the best land in Lincoln County. Well, the guests are gathering more rapidly, we see Mrs. Billy Ray Stewart, nee Betty Jo Flowers, and four fine children. She tells us she now owns six oil wells and is one of the social ladies of New Orleans, having a summer home near Enterprise. Bobby Tolar, now a very very distinguished Gentleman arrived a minute ago in his Cadillac. He is indeed a highly sociable gentleman, as well as being Editor of a well known nation wide newspaper. On his arm is a lovely brunett, well, well. At last here is Dorothy Callendar. She is now a secretary to a most popular United States Senator who hails from Missouri. By the way Dot tells us that she is engaged and to a home boy, she'll make it yet. Theda Carlisle R.N. has just shot in. She's a nurse in the Baptist Hospital in Jackson. She says that Doctors aren't so bad at all and she just loves to take care of ailing people. The honorable Mr. Ward is now being announced. He's a quiet family man but has a nice size farm, 300 acres and also a contracting business for ready cash. Mrs. Bullard, nee Shirley Coker, just slipped in. As Jim said, 'She did finish college but she now has three more courses to take, two girls and a boy. Mr. Chance QGeraldj has hopped through the door. The cute Dot Quinn landed him. Besides being a good provider and father, Gerald is a slick businessman. In a few more years we predict Johns -Mansville shall have to take down their signs. Well, now just look, the former Miss Barry, finally. Yes, Edouida is a lawyer of considerable renown. She tells us it took, of course, longer than she expected to become famous but just wait. She has already had her biggest case, a nip to say yes at the altar, but with a companion who is also interested in affairs of law. They regxesent in legal matters of one of the biggest corpora- tions in America. Oh, by the way if all these predictions don't come Ulle, I'm no bigger fool than you. Your Prophet 44: Wall and 7e4zmwfz As we, the all-powerful class of '54, near the last days of our reign in and about the campus of Dear Ole Heuck's, we deem it wise. just and expedient to make some provision for all our earthly goods, troubles and tribulations for which we confidently expect to have no more use. Be it hereby ordained and established that this provision invalidates all previous arrangements for the divisions of our spoils. To the Juniors we hereby bestow our Senior Dignity and importance to be theirs for the next year. To the Juniors also we bequeath the joy and trouble of graduation. To the Sophomores we leave all the encouragement and faith toward newer and better ideals. Also to you, the dear Sophs, our Biology books, first year Algebra and thrills of world History. To the Freshmen we bestow all our pencils, paper and all other useful material to be found most anywhere in anyone's desk, and above all to you, our baby brothers and sisters, our sympathy. To all the Faculty we leave our best arguments, those that stood up under yours and all our best wishes for a brighter, quieter future. Also to you, our favorite teachers, and equal amount of sympathy. Last but bestg to Miss Ida and the ladies of the Lunchroom, a much more orderly meal time, our broken milk bottles, all the English Peas and all tl1e dishes fnot broken, always to be carried back as we so set the example. This the last will and Testament of the Class of '54, in the year of our lord, Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Four.
