50 YEARS AGO Hesston College Hesston Academy and Bible School opened its doors September 22, 1909. The school developed from an appeal to the Kansas-Nebraska Conference in 1907 for a lN1ennonite school west ofthe Mississippi River 'gin which Bible would be made a specialtyf, A HCircular Letterw, published by the founders in 1908 and handed by the first solicitors to all who were asked for contributions, stated! That it shall be the purpose ofthe school and especially ofthe faculty and management to conduct the institution for the good of the Church and the cause of Christ, rather than for personal gain or self-exaltation. The institution during its fifty years has held this sacred wish of its founders for a Bible-permeated curri- culum. 4

For about six years it served as the dormitory. dining hall, Classrooms, chapel, and church.
