Kenneth Steider EARS QF IND I PRQGRESS 2 Proposed site for the new m d ITABLE 50 YEARS AGO Hesston College Hesston Academy and Bible School opened its doors September 22, 1909. The school developed from an appeal to the Kansas-Nebraska Conference in 1907 for a lN1ennonite school west ofthe Mississippi River 'gin which Bible would be made a specialtyf, A HCircular Letterw, published by the founders in 1908 and handed by the first solicitors to all who were asked for contributions, stated! That it shall be the purpose ofthe school and especially ofthe faculty and management to conduct the institution for the good of the Church and the cause of Christ, rather than for personal gain or self-exaltation. The institution during its fifty years has held this sacred wish of its founders for a Bible-permeated curri- culum. 4 DG Dedication 3'5- This being the Colden Anniversary vc-ar ul Hesston College, we wish to express sincere honor and gratitude to the many people who have given of themselves so willingly to the great cause ol' Christian education. 'lllli FIRST FACULTY -john ll. Kanagv,-Iohn D. Charles, Daniel ll. Bender. and Stella Cloopriclvr lirb. We are deeply indebted: To the Nlennonite Churcli lor realizing ilu' nv:-cl of higher education on the Christian lc-vel. To the devoted faculty and stall' members who have served so noblv throughout the years, and whose lives and words have given direction to scores of truth seeking youth. To the constituency who has upheld Hesston College both with gifts and prayers. To the Alumni who are living UHesston in the far corners ofthe earth. To the students who each year make Hesston College a new reality and a new need. 5 Green Gables, Summer of 1909 This building, the oldest on campus, is probably the most familiar to many people. It was built during the summer of 1909. For about six years it served as the dormitory. dining hall, Classrooms, chapel, and church. It was the starting point from which an expansion program has been growing until now, and we pray that the program may con- tinue for many years. Green Gables. 1958 6 Green ables A - 4.
