addItIon of another chlld to theIr fam1ly T1llman M He grew to young manhood much as any other boy In that sectIon of th. country notable for Its old homesteads and Pennsylvanla German ways At the age of nlneteen he came wIth hls parents to Harvey County Kansas After two years he returned to hIs former home In Pennsylvama where he 'narrled LIZLIC A Hess They made thelr home near Newton Kansas Here they engaged IH farmIng for th1rty years wIth the exceptlon of a few years spent In connectlon wIth a farmel s creamery at Har peI Kansas Eleven chlldren blessed theIr home nIne of whom grew to l'T'l3tLlI'1tV On September 12 1912 one seven year old daughter was fatally burned by the exploslon of a gasolme lIght plant This same erploslon severely burned Brother Erb on both legs HIs wounds responded very slowly to treatment and three years later hIs Tight leg., was amputated Though he was actlve durmg., the rest of hIs lIfe hlS left leg was never entlrely healed To say that he was an Hesston Academy and Blble School was opened hlected as Its Busmess Manager from the start he saw the school grow from an Academy havmg an enroll ment of 21 students housed In a three story frame buIldIng buIlt In a wheat fleld to an Instltutlon of over two hundred students enjoy Ing the advanta es of a modern brlck buIldIng and a well Improved campus Each student In attendance through these years had personal dealmgs wIth Brother Erb Even before students reached the grounds they fIrst Wrote to Brother them a warm welcome typlfvlng the spIr1t of the InstItutIon When students were slow In paylng thelr term bIlls h1s emphatIc characterlstlc remlnder In chapel made an effectIve appeal to negllgent students On Arbor Day hIs brIef e:IposIt1on on the proper method of plantmg trees and shrubs of dlgglng dandelIons of observlng the ethxcs of returnlng borrowed tools enhsted all students to a hearty co operatIon Students maklng part of theIr way through school were no small part of hIs con cern How to provlde more work for worthv students was a constant problem to solve Nor dxd his Interest cease when all work was arranged He saw that they ac cordmgly had the pl oper tools w1th whIch to work and that they used them effectlvely Ever Interested In student act1v1tIes Brother Erb was present at all publlc pro grams often dropped hIs work to llsten to chorus practlces and was an actlve member In such organlzatlons as Audubon Socletv Mennonlte HlStOT1Cal SocIety and Campus Improvement Club In the fall of 1928 for the fIrst tlme In the hlstory of the school Brother Erb took a wacatlon Whlle vIsItIng In the eastern part of the Unlted States doctors advlsed hIm to undergo an operatIon and they furthermore suggested that he return home to haxe It done Durmg the last years of hIs lIfe a cancer had developed and as a last resort hIs left leg was also amputated But the shock of the operatIon was too severe and hIs lIfe went out quletlv at Bethel Hospltal Newton Kansas January 25 1929 As has been lntlmated he was one of the leadlng men In or0IanIzIng Hesston Col lege The most outstandlng feature of hIs work was hIs careful management of the fI nancIal program of the InstItutIon As the school grew In enrollment In currIculum and In equmment the budget for 1tS operatIon was also Increased The Increased needs necessltated clear vIsIon and sound Judgment In everv Imestment In full possesslon of these qualltles he was actIvely engaged IH launchlng the present endowment program whlch wIll provlde a new source of safe and permanent Income for our colleges Nor can we stress hIs work In connectlon wIth Hesston College wIthout acknowl edglng hIs actlve part In church and communlty Hls Interests were not conflned to one Instltutlon but all actIvItIes of the communltv vshlch he saw were an essentIal addIt1on to the welfare of each cItI1en recewed hIs hearty co operatIon and support As blshop he served the Mennomte church In Kansas for over thIrtv years
