Football Shows Strength In 6-3 Season The 1981 Hersey football team, coached by joe Gliwa, had a rough 6-3 season which was good enough for second in the MSL North. Only two very close losses kept them from the playoffs. One loss was to Wheeling in an offensive showdown 39-33 and the other to Fremd in a 79- 16 overtime game. The Huskies led the league in scoring with 21.8 points per game. We had a very explosive offensive team , stated Coach Gliwa. Hersey sent four players to the All-Conference team. They were Dave K oziol, jim Mueller, Bob Connor andjim Limperis. jim Limperis was voted by his teammates as the M. V.P. and was also selected for the All-Area team. Mark Kovack was voted the Most Improved Player. This season was marred by the death of a starting linebacker, Kurt Thyreen. He was a great athlete and scholar. The feelings of the team were best summed up by Coach joe Gliwa when he said, Kurt is now playing for a new team and a new coach.
