Band Has . . ' eevum' Spirit! The pride of Illinois, john Hersey's fine band orga- niza tion, once again delighted area music lovers dur- ing the 7981-82 school year. The long competitive year began in the summer and was especially tough on the freshman. Summer band was an experience most freshman disliked. For the first week, the freshman had prac- tice for four hours a day under the grueling luly sun. Basic skills and marching manuevers were drilled to perfection. For the next ten weeks, the entire band met for ten hours a week to practice their shows for the fall. For the first time the band learned two shows, The band began their season in the fall and per- formed during half-time of home football games. Pomberets, Colorguard and the Twirlers added color and variety to the shows. The band competedat U of land the North western Parade. They also performed at the Octoberfest. After football season, the band broke into two groups, Symphonic Winds and Concert Band. They performed with Peter Nero at the Pops Concert last March. Poms, flags and twirlers also performed. Mr. Zubler directed the band this year. His assis- tant in directing was Mike Hetzel. The drum majors this year were Rick Fritch and Dan Gauper. The Hersey band had a very successful year. They have gained respect from musicians all over the country. By Stefanie Boll Drum major Rick Fritch leads the band downfield. Hildi Diefenderfer never stops striving for perfection. Band members take a break in the loft. The brass section ends with a strong note. Trumpeters concentrate while performing. i B,-ad Wigs 50105 during half- Chris Fogarty twirls for an ex- time- cellent performance.
