Cheerleaders Strive for Spirit One of the most enthusiastic groups at Hersey are the cheerleaders. They keep the crowds going at all the games with plenty of effort. Becoming a cheer- leader is not an easy task. There are tryouts held before each football and basketball season. Anyone that is interested can tryout. The judges consist of coaches, teachers and alumni cheerleaders. In addition to the cheerleaders there is the Fall Club, which have been cheering with the girls for three years. The Fall Club is made up of a group of eight guys, who also have to tryout to earn their positions. Hersey is still the only school in the Mid- Suburban Conference to have guys on the cheerlead- ing squads. The addition of guys has proven to be a great asset these past years. Mrs. Bridget Lucas and Mr. Robert Hannon co- sponsor the cheerleaders. They have been coaching for three years. One night a week for two hours th ey spend teaching the squads different routines. The captains for this year's Football squads were Terry Conlon and Craig Schachtschneider for Varsi- ty, Colleen Gera ty for Junior Varsity, Chris Michaels for Sophomore, and Becky Schram for the Freshman squad. Providing the leadership for this year's basketball cheerleaders were as follows: Caren Gauvreau and Craig Schach tschneider for Varsity, Sandy Reeve for girl's Varsity, Beth Watson for Sophomore and the Freshman captain was Kathy Christopherson. Cheerleading requires plenty of hard work and practice. All the dedication that the cheerleaders put in to their work always pays off They always seem to work together and spread the H uskie spirit around to everyone. With plenty of practice Varsity Basketball Cheerleaders show off a great accomplishment. Colleen Sweeney, Karen Lakome, and Colleen Veselits keep the rowdy fans going. by Rose Vazzano 'k..
