West Side Story ends in tragedy as Maria holds her clying Tony. 'West Side Story' Thrills Audiences West Side Story was the second summer musical that was performed by students from other schools along with Hersey students. Four adults from the Des Plaines Theatre Guild also had parts in the show. The musical was performed August 4 and 5. The plot of the show is almost identi- cal to that of Romeo andluliet. Tony, a member of the jets, and Ma- ria, whose brother is the leader of the Sharks, a Puerto Rican group, fall in love despite the differences between the two groups. Prejudices and battles keep the lov- ers apart until, finally, in one quarrel, Bernardo, leader of the Sharks, is killed by Tony. The hatred between the jets and Sharks deepens and soon Tony is dead also. There is sorrow for both groups now and under this common grief they are finally brought together. Another fight breaks out between the Sharks and the lets. Year In Review 19
