Individual Events Team Stresses Public Speaking The award-winning Individual Speech Events Team participated in numerous speech activities throughout the year. They attended several invitationals including Niles North, Lake Park, Deerfield and Dundee. There are various events for the members to concentrate on including original mono- logue, prose reading, radio, oratorical dec- INDIVIDUAL EVENTS. Front Row: Ann, Langley, Barbara Forbis lamation and comedy reading. A lot of work is devoted to the preparation and memoriz- ation of each individual event. Although Laurie Lacher was the only member to qualify for the state level, the team did an excellent over-all job. Almost all members went to Districts, where they achieved fifth place. Row 2: Mrs. Su- mann, zanne Skutta, Barb MacNama.ra, Theresa Hanssen, Linda Wratten, Language Clubs Stress Customs, Ideas The major purpose of the Hersey language clubs is to spark an extra interest in foreign languages, as well as offering students a chance to learn more of the culture, customs and ways of life in foreign countries. Activities of the clubs included bake sales, cultural food parties and movies. Educational endeavors outside the regular French, German and Spanish classes con- sisted of films, tapes, records and lectures concerning their respective languages. Debaters Confront Pollution Issue Resolved: That the Federal Government Should Establish, Finance and Administer Programs to Control Air andfor Water Pol- lution. Such was the topic that engrossed Hersey's debaters this year, making them experts in the field and aware of present state, local, and national regulations. The Debate Team attended numerous tournaments from Southern Illinois University to Arlington Heights, and gathered valuable pointers from workshops. Research, long hours of practice, and early morning awakenings are part of the debater's world.
