EDITOR: Millie Osowski ASSOCIATE EDITORS: Marty Fosse, John Lenzini BUSINESS MANAGER: Nancy Sohn PHOTOGRAPHERS: Bill Bishop, Joey Helleny STAFF: Chris Branca, Jim Dillard, Felicia Rancilio, Ella Smothers ADVISOR: Anthony B. Venegoni GO PLACIDLY amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms win all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen L others, even the dull and ignorant, for they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser per- sons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is. Many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself, especially do not feign affection. Neither be cyni- cal about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imagin- ings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are the child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisey confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all of its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Try to be happy. Senior Millie Osowski has won first place in the 15th District Voice of Dcmocacy speech writing contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Millie's entry in the contest is sponsored by the Hemn VF- W Post 1567 whose commander is Robert Craig. The theme for this year's contest is “Mv Re- sponsibility to Freedom. Each contestant was asked to write and then tape-record a three to five minute broadcast express- ing his views on the theme. The 15th district comprises all counties south of Franklin County. It is one of 16 districts in Illinois which will be repre- sented at the state contest in Springfield February 10. The play, in three acts, will probably be given in late March, or as Mrs Bates, play director avs. We've got until the end of May. or until we get a curtain. Year Book Enters Final Phase The best ever is the only way that staff members rescribe tall, opened the door to Mrs. Morris' room, and pushed a small sattcry-opcrated train into the quite classroom. This surprised not only the English class but some Spanish .tudents were quite startled when they discovered Mr. Rushing vas in Mrs. Morris’ classroom, observing her class when the tiny rain appeared. It appears that Assistant Principal Richard Henley has been warning the halls lately, looking for mischievous students to put n the dog house. Beware! Twenty-five students of Mr. Jerry Kirby's biology classes plan to take a field trip to SIU this month They will spend the entire afternoon on campus. A friend of Mr. Kirby, who works with eadavers. will show the students how dissections are performed. Yvonne Brandon, sophomore, recently wrote a poem which teems to capture every student’s thoughts about cutting class. “To Class or Not To Class” I think I'll skip this coming hour. I’m feeling rather mean and sour I hate this hour anyway; I’ll come again another day. My stomach hurts; my head is light. This dad-bum corridor’s too bright. My locker’s stuck — the lock got jammed, not :i lest (I wish I’d crammed). teacher of the year, makes this a good time to say some gtx d things about the faculty here. It is rare that a teacher ever gets any verbal credit or thanks for the things that he or she does that arc not re- quired by his contract. We feel that now is a good time. The teachers of HHS who sponsor clubs deserve some thanks. Those of us who get involved know how much time and trouble this can sometimes mean. The teachers who act as ad- visors to publications spend much of their free time with this headache. The junior-senior play requires many hours of otherwise leisure time for both the cast and the advisor. Teachers who help on the prom and the homecoming dance also rate our favorite list. And those who just show interest also deserve kudos. To all the individuals who help, whether we have made an example of them or not. we say thanks. We hope everyone else will too.
