E dwina Cronin We have been told by the older generation that we have just finished four of the best years we shall ever experience. Sure, we are optimistic about the future, but we are sentimental about the past. We are going to miss a lot of things. We are going to miss those Herrin-Marion games and Mr. Lee's gentle voice. We shall not see the blood on Mr. Venegonfs shirt any more. We shall not be Mrs. Lingle,s little illiteratesng she will have others. No more issues of the TATTLER! No more early rising to catch that bus! We do regret leavingg however, we must move on. But this is I1Ot the end-all and the be-all. With the background provided for us by H. T. H. The plot dealt with the efforts of Silas J. Everheel to gain possession of the valley from Eldon Berry, present de- scendant of a family who settled it in the Gold Rush days of '49, With the help of his risen,' ancestors, who were disgruntled with his soft-handling of Everheel, and Prim, his girl, Eldon suc- ceeded in running the villain out of the magical valley. And magical it was! Where else did sun flowers ever grow as tall as trees and bean stalks grow as tall as a house in a day. Excellent performances were given by Robert Quaglia, Millicent King, and Jack Zwick. However, the show was stolen by a wisecracking witch, a men- tally deficient Berry ,from the past, and Everheel's brow-beaten mechanic. They were portrayed by Mary Jo Baggott, Diane Hutchison, Roger Hendricks, and Herman Marlow, respectively. Many thought the play would be a dud because of last year's successful presentation, THE ROBE. Nevertheless, GREEN VALLEY was a great success. Next year's seniors will have to go all out to surpass it. Director: MRS. CAREY Assistant Director: MRS. LQCKWOOD Page Ona Hundred Eight Iflrm-11c'C ,.,,... The most exclusive organization on the Herrin Township High School campus is the National Honor Society. Members are nominated by the teachers, and a special faculty committee representing all of the school departments, makes the final choices. To be eligible for membership, a student must be in the upper one-third of the junior or senior class scholastically. Nominees are judged on scholarship, character, leadership, and service. The Herrin Chapter is affiliated with a national organization. The first banquet ever to be held here honoring National Honor Society members and their parents took place April 28, 1955. Faculty members and the board of education were also guests. One hundred and twenty people listened to Sander Zwick, an alumnus of the Herrin Chapter, speak at this banquet. The members elected last year were Tom Haney, Roger Hendricks, Diane Hutchison, hlillirent King, Carol Ann Nlarlow, and 'lack Zwivk. The play may or may not be 'cthe thing but tradi- tion set down by the Bard of Avon so long ago has been carried on to present clay with greater popularity than ever before. The Dramatic Club of Herrin High School has the distinction of being one of the oldest and largest clubs in school. Twelve years of continuous activity, directed by its sponsor, Mrs. Carey, have seen the club grow from a membership of 27 in 1943 to its present mem- bership of 87 entlnisiastic Thespians. Page Ona Hundred Twenty lligh standards make membership in the club a prized attainment, for it signifies many hours of hard work, as well as natural talent. To be a member of the Dramatic Club one must have at least one semester of speech and must provide a portion of the program for one meeting. Dramatic Club members supply the talent for at least two major plays, several one act plays, and numerous programs given at school and at various civic organizations in the community. One of the greatest rewards for participation in these' extra-curricular activities comes on graduation night when the much coveted Dramatic Club Pin is presented to qualified seniors. This year 17 seniors-Regene Blazine, Mary Jo Bag- gott, Tom Moulton, Roger Hendricks, Gloria Agers, Jo Ann Smith, Lou Bertane, Jim Caleaterra, Lillian Brayfield, Jane Gamble, Millicent King, Diane Hutchi- son, Edwina Cronin, Robert Quaglia, Herman Blarlow, Don Perry, and Jack Zwirk were honored on gradua- tion night. This large group, the largest in the clubs history, is due to the eight one act speech class plays given in 1953, last year's junior class play, The Robef and this year's senior endeavor, i'Green Valleyf, both of the last mentioned plays using large casts. Dramatic talent was evident also in the fine one act plays presented at the club meetings. The Pearlsf, 'Tigureheadsf' HHenry Aldrichf, NAngel Child, The Pattersonis Dinner, Finders Keepers, The Wise Freshmanf' and The Purple Door Knob were proof of the acting ability of Herrin High School students. Four one 11Ct plays were given to the student body this year. Students were transported from the comfort- able living room belonging to the three old maid aunts in Alexander's Proposal to the somewhat hectic home pictured in Tell It To the Moransf' then to the cap- tain's cabin aboard the Old Hooker in the search for llc, and finally to the crippled submarine on the ocean floor in Submerg1'd. CREED OF FUTURE FARMERS I believe in the future of farming, with a faith born not of words but of deeds-achieveinents won by the present and the past generations of farinersq in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come up from the struggles of former years. I believe that to live and work on a good farm is pleasant as well as ehallengingg for I know the joys and discomforts of farm life and hold an inborn fond- ness for those associations which, even in hours of dis- couragement, I can not deny. I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work ef- ficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and Page One Hundred Twenty-Four skill as I can secure, and in the ability of organized farmers to serve our own and the public interest in marketing the product of our toil. LIBRARY Under Miss Sanfordis able supervision, our library has reached great proportions. After our high school was destroyed by fire in 1948, all the fiction, biographies, and short stories that were salvaged could be placed on one shelf. Now there are more than 7000 volumes of fiction, biographies, and reference books. We have 550 volumes of biography, 275 dictionaries, encyclopedias, and atlases, and over 2000 volumes of fiction. This year the students have had access to eighty- five magazines. Forty-eight of these magazines were used in the various depart- ments, and thirty-seven, in the study hall. Our library has improved not only in quantity but in quality. During sum- mer vacations, our librarian has spent hours in selecting the best books for high school students. Miss Sanfordis thorough training in the classics has made her doubly valuable as an efficient librarian.
