Team Members Mark Barton, Keith Carpenter, and Christopher Wist practiced every day after school with Sponser Miss Mary Duke and alternates Steve Drill, Gilad Gordon, and Ruth Polishuk, trying to improve their speed and accuracy. After winning their first 2 games by wide margins, they eaked out a narrow victory in the Semi-Final against Springbrook and Loudon Valley. Both Herndon and Springbrook had scored 50 point bonuses and were tied at 455 all going into the final free for the round. Herndon pulled away to win with a score of 555 to Springbrook ' s 515 and Loudon Valley ' s 450. Herndon won a minimum of $2,100 in scholarship money this year, with a chance to win almost 5,000 dollars if they won the Final and Washing- ton-Baltimore Inter-City Championship. They were scheduled to compete in the Final against Sidwell Friends and Walt Whitman on April 26,1974. 22 24 25 POWDER PUFF FOOTBALL 27 DRESS DOWN SENIORS RINGS AND PICTURES SPORTS FOOTBALL The varsity football team did not have the season they would have liked to have had, but despite this, spirit was very high. The only places where win-loss records really count are in professional sports. In professional football, the player is out to win money. There are other goals, but the main factor is still money. In high school football, other benefits take the place of money, such as enjoyment, learning, discipline, and spirit. The members of the varsity football team gained all of these and many more. Taking this into consideration, the football team deserves much credit. The freshman team had a very good season. They are expected to make an exciting varsity team in 1975-76. ERNOOfy IERN0ON HiR N! 36 38 39 BASKETBALL The basketball team ' s record in the regular season this year with eight wins and ten losses overall, with a disappointing record of six wins and ten losses in district competition. Our sixth place finish in district was due to the inexperience of several players in the beginning of the year, but after the first four games of the season we began to win. Coach Jessup installed an excellent, new fast-break offense, which contributed greatly to our success. We were fortunate to have five starters who could score, for a well balanced attack. Steve Schultz was the leading scorer, with Mark Nepivoda and Rick Mabry close behind. Mark Pagano, Steve Schultz, and Bo McGrath provided good re¬ bounding, as well as scoring. Jim Welch did an outstanding job as manager of the team. All of the team practiced hard to improve and win in the district tournament. We defeated Madison in our first game of the tournament with an outstanding effort from the team, coach, and fans. The next night we came back with the same formula to defeat Marshall and assure a place in the regional tournament. Field hockey has long been misunderstood. Many see it as being dangerous, even brutal. Not so if the proper technique is utilized! It is a game that requires skill and finesse. It demands that the participant make quick and intelligent judgments that will affect herself and her teammates. It also requires a great deal of teamwork in order for a team to execute the game in a proper and successful manner. The girls who participated during the 1973 season at Herndon possessed all of the above mentioned qualities, and were therefore able to enjoy a successful and rewarding season. Add to their skill, their spirit of competition and togetherness, their willingness to make the necessary sacrifices and efforts and you can find the key to most successful hockey season that Herndon has enjoyed in many a year. Varsity ' s overwhelming desire to win the district championship worked against them in their final game, causing them to try too hard; however, no. 2 is surely an enviable position and besides, standings don ' t tell the whole story. This years teams possessed a special something that has enshrined them in the hearts and memories of their coaches for a long time to come. f L $ jbBt ' Bfc g- -% lj - m , yjjteiS OFFENSE: LEFT TO RIGHT: Martha Street, Susie Hallama, Gail Tennant, Nancy Gallahan, Barbara Henke, Jenny Arritt, Kathleen Murphy, Pam Birch, Cathy Lowe. % ' % : k :■ s ' • $- J.V. This is not a quote from a gold medalist or any other famous person. It was said by someone who has won much more than a victory in sports. It does, however, have much to do with a sport such as cross country track. Success is not only in winning but rather in gaining confidence, improvement, and satisfaction. This must be learned before anyone can get anything out of a sport, even enjoyment. It was very apparent that each of the members of the Herndon High Cross Country team found this out. It seems very likely that if a poll was taken to see how many of the students knew what kind of season the team had, the majority of them would not know. It is not easy to have any kind of team spirit with this kind of support. A few dedicated people went on despite this, to compete in cross country for this school. It might be added that they did this quite well, too. 54 55 SWIMMING 1973-1974 season was the second year for the Herndon Water Hornets. To say the least it was an outstanding year being un¬ defeated in the Great Falls District. The team this year was comprised of 50 swimmers and divers. This is the only coed varsity sport at Herndon High. It is often an underestimated sport. Tennis is not as simple as it may seem. Although it may appear that it would be very easy to go out and hit that little ball across a low net with a good sized racket, if you have ever tried it, you know that it is not quite that way at all. It takes much hard practice to excel at tennis. The girls of Herndon High Tennis Team showed how much they practiced by the ways they excelled, ending the season with a 7 win, 2 loss record. If you thought that the Billy Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs match was exciting, you should have seen the girls of the Herndon team. The team consisted of Terry Brown, Linda Clark, Jonell Dunn, Cathy Hoebel, Ginette Hemley, Lisa Kauffman, Rosonne Lacci, Laura MacDonald, Maureen Malone, Gail Short, Ellen Spalding, Suzanne Griffin, Holly Ketchel, Nan Rich, and Susie Weber. FORENSICS Forensics consists of 5 categories: prose poetry reading original oratory extemporaneous speaking written spelling contest In these different contests girls and boys do not compete together in any oratory activity. 1st place winners only, from the schools go to the District competition in each event. 1st and 2nd place winners at the District level go to Regionals and the 1st and 2nd place winners there go on to the state level. Usually 30 to 40 students participate at the school level. Unfortunately not enough students take an interest so much of the talent goes undiscovered. It is not a club; it is an activity. If there were more interest a club could be formed. There are other opportunities to compete such as the Washington Forensic League.
