Adv ert isements m ' • a Rain marred the beginning of Homecoming ’73, as the an¬ nual parade and bonfire were cancelled. The pep rally was forced inside and the cheerleaders struggled with a small but rowdy crowd. A biting wind dominated the next day. Parade spectators huddled together against the cold, watching the floats and marching units pass by. For the seniors, the game was a fitting ending to their four homecoming games. As freshmen, the team tied, and as se¬ niors, they left with a final score of 7-7 against McLean. The highlight of the game came at halftime when Lida Obrcian was crowned Homecoming Queen of 1973 and Dianne Sharp was crowned her Maid of Honor. The Homecoming ’73 Court was presented at the dance which had as its theme, “Knights in White Satin”. As the couples danced to the vibrant music of Homestead, Home¬ coming 1973 drew to a close. 20 Homecoming 21 •••••« r rim wmx ' ■ Oix+ . HAf)C) ' 1 i ? t Hcu k)J t H C 14 C ffttfY Z. The most fun was the Powder Puff Football Game. In November, the junior-senior team faced the freshman-sophomore in an annual challenge. Cap¬ tains of the junior-senior team were Connie Dugan and Liz Murtaugh. Leading the freshman-sophomore team were Karen Dugan and Pam Mann. The usual supporters, in the form of cheerleaders, were there; but, in addition, a whacky pep band, under Chris Wist’s direction, performed at half-time. The cheerleaders were Robert Altmar, John Berthe, Chris Campbell, Bill Fortney, George Ishee, and Andy Watts. Their antics helped make the game a success. The coachers were, for the junior-senior team, Dave Dubell and Jim Evans and, for the freshman- sophomore team, Mr. Lewis and Mr. Sirk. Also, no game would be complete without an official, Buzzy McNutt. The game was won by the junior-senior team with a 36-0 final score. Other fund raising activities have been selling of baked goods, popcorn, and stationery. Also, G.A.A. was in charge of home football concessions. 28 PLAZA SUITE by Neil Simon “Visitor From Mamaroneck” Bellhop . Karen Nash . Sam Nash. Waiter. Jean McCormack . . For the younger audience, the ensemble per¬ formed “Tubby the Tuba” with Robert Terio as the tuba soloist. For the adults, there was Christmas music, and Frank Harden and Jackson Weaver from WMAL Radio were there to narrate “Tubby the Tuba.” Halfway through the concert, to a fan¬ fare from the French horns, the band pre¬ sented Mr. Duman with a letter jacket. “Uncle George” was printed across the front, a Budweiser patch was attached to the sleeve, and a Marching Band letter was also on the front. For the wind ensem¬ ble, it was a successful first concert. 31 Oak Grove becoming a Herndon tradition after three years The Oak Grove Program, now in its 3rd year at Herndon, celebrated Christmas this year with a party. The Program’s young chargers were entertained by a “Night Before Christmas” skit, a visit by Santa Claus and some Christmas Carols. Mrs. Erard and Mrs. Heningburg formed the Oak Grove Program in 1970. Since then it has been sup¬ ported by Eunice Shriver and has become a part of Herndon High School. The program involves fourth pe¬ riod English classes and the retarded students from Oak Grove School. Mrs. Erard feels this program is a great benefit to all students involved and “we can all learn something from the children.” 1973 Basketball Homecoming Court Freshman: Patti True Mike Bennett Sophomore: Sue Van Howeling Dan Chamberlain Juniors: Marla Thomas Stan Fleming Seniors: Marlyse Smith Tom Shephard Basketball Homecoming is sponsored by the members of the Pep Club. In a secret bal¬ lot the King and Queen were chosen from the four couples of the Homecoming Court. Announced at half-time, the King and Queen were Stan Fleming and Marla Thomas. Marla was crowned by the Co- Captains of the Basketball team, Randy Jessup and Tom Shepard, and Stan was crowned by the President of Pep Club, Diann Uminski. Could you put 1500 students into Herndon’s auditorium? If you can, you have a . . . Herndon High Assembly This was the year of the bands for S.C.A. assemblies. The assemblies were comprised of rock bands, jazz groups, folk singers, and a rock historian. Each assembly began with Cathy Clement yelling at the audience to sit down. After about ten minutes, students struggled to their seats. The crowded audience, hoping only that the band would be good, were glad to be out of class. 36 37 Mark Zasada as Charlie Brown. m YOU ' Rt A 6000 MAM 3 CHARUE BROWN A MUfICAL (HIZRimHOir fW THE EMTi« WAltf om r «c comic snip pf MOTS ' By CHARLES M SCHULZ muVc A«p .yfiics bk CihRK G£SW6£ 38 Schroeder, Lucy, Patty, Charlie Brown and Snoopy assemble. American Field Service Debbie Barber The American Field Service is an organization which was created after World War II in order to foster friendship and understanding between countries of the world. The Herndon High School chapter of A.F.S is mainly a fund raising one. We have had bake sales, a dance, a dough¬ nut sale, and a friendship chain. The money we raise is used to bring a foreign student to Hern¬ don and to send one of our students overseas. The exchange students must go through a program of intensive screening to determine that in personality as well as intelligence they are well quali¬ fied to make their foreign experience enriching for themselves, their host families, and for those whom they come in contact with. This year we are sponsoring a Herndon student, Debbie Barber, in Como, Italy. Through cor¬ respondence we keep in touch with her and learn about Italy ourselves. It is also our pleasure to have at Herndon, Isa Muller from Brazil. She is living with Paddy Brunetti and her family in Herndon. Through A.F.S. we hope to create an atmosphere of friendship and better understanding both at Herndon and throughout the world. 42 BACK ROW: Bill Jarrett, Steve Westphal, Bob Sinclair, Paddy Brunetti, Matt Orlins. They meet in the pla¬ netarium every Thursday to use the planetarium’s facilities for viewing stars and listening to music. The club’s sponsor is Mr. Chandler. In running the club he is aided by Brian Har- boume, who holds the illustrious title of President. Second- in-command is Robert Greer, who valiantly takes over when the President is absent. All the club’s records are kept by the secretary, Sally Ann Reed. Charles Gauntt watches over the club’s meager funds with a suspicious eye. The club holds observing sessions at night in order to give the members a chance to use their new-gained knowledge under actual conditions because the sky appears different under the planetarium dome. However, star-gazing is not the only activity that Astronomy Club indulges in. They are in the process of building two telescopes from scratch. They are presently ginding the mirrors, passing them around so that every interested member has a chance to work on the telescope. During the fall, the club put on an “Occult Underworld” show in all the lunch shifts. The show was written and per¬ formed by the club members. Most of the members are tal¬ ented in one field or another in Astronomy. They take turns presenting lectures for the benefit of the other club members. In this way everyone learns a little about Astronomy. BACK ROW: Jim Davis, Frank Fiorella, Ken Barkhau, Brian Harboume, Robert Greer, Steve Westphal, Paul Gallagher. The two terminals of the club are Jer¬ ome and Harvey. Jerome is the on-line Terminal, connected to Sigfried, the telephone. Harvey is the tape-typer terminal. The two terminals share a workroom with a tape-eating air- conditioner. The club is presided over by the two year dictator, Sally Ann Reed, who rules it with an iron voice. Assisting her is Jeff Weeks, the Vice President-Trea¬ surer. His two jobs are to count the rich¬ es and to take over when the President is stricken with laryngitis. The secre¬ tary is Tracy Fuschino. Her claim to fame is that every meeting she faithful¬ ly passes around an attendance list. Helping the club are several other people, known as members. Some of the more illustrious members are Robert Greer and Brian Harboume. They are members-at-large; they’ve yet to show up for a meeting. Many hours of practice have been spent in preparation for their numerous performances. Dur¬ ing the summer, most of the members spent a week at Roanoke College where a special drill team camp was held. Many of their routines originated at the camp where they came in second place out of eleven other schools represented there. They have performed not only at half-time activities during football and bas¬ ketball seasons, but also in several parades, a special performance at George Mason University, and several other activities. It consists of Howard and his helpers: Brad Martin and John Hatchett. The club’s token damsel-in-distress is Sally Ann Reed. She holds the distinction of being one of the two people in the club who owns a mask. Occasionally the club goes into Washington D.C. or elsewhere to view a tournament in or¬ der to compare their style with that of a professional. The sponsor of the club is Mr. Abraham. He allows the club to pursue their own interests since he does not know much about fencing. The club teaches the unintiated how to fence. They are skilled in the use of both saber and foil. The nice part about it is that a new mem¬ ber does not have to buy his own equipment — he can borrow someone else’s (like How¬ ard’s). Fencing Club 54 Howard puts John on guard. French Club This year the French Club went out of its way to break the image of being the dullest club in the school. In an all-out effort to meet finances for a trip to Canada, members became expert at throwing together cake mixes on Tuesday evenings for our regular Wednesday bake sales. The members sponsored their first annual spring dance, carrying the theme of the “Nifty-Fifties”. All members participated actively in the annual Foreign Language Clubs’ Christmas Party in which they put on a satire of their French classes. The club sponsored its annual French restaurant trip in the spring. In an ef¬ fort to become a more integral part of the school, the club helped sponsor the student production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”. SPONSORS: Mme. Sleeper, Mme. Klein, Mme. Samuels. The students all have a chance to obtain a belt of a certain degree, but must put forth an effort which the instructors consider essential. Until recently the club has been unorganized and has had a lesser degree of success. Now the arts of Judo (Tai Kwon Do, Shado Kan Karatae and Kung Fu) are combined into one art. Their activities were only exceeded by their enthusiasm. The membership doubled and they went on to have one of their most successful years ever. The club started the year off right by winning first prize in the float category of the Homecoming Pa¬ rade. As the leaves turned color, an all day hike on the Appalachian Trail was made. As the year progressed, supplementary textbooks were bought for the Latin classes and a guest speak¬ er was invited to speak on ancient Rome and show slides. On an icy night in February, the club members went into Washington D.C. to see the hit musical “Godspell”. Next, they started a chapter of the Latin National Honor Society. This spring, the club had a cookout and hike in the Prince William Forest Park, and made extensive improvements in the Latin Court. The highlight of the year for several members was a ten day tour of Greece during spring vacation. They spent the first part of the trip in Athens visiting historic Greece. They concluded the trip with a four day cruise of the Aegean. Finally, to top off the year, the Latin Club held their annual Roman banquet in a nearby restaurant. The highlights of the majorettes’ year was the Inaugural Parade. Along with the band, the girls joined a 1976 member band from Fairfax County and marched down Pennsylvania Avenue representing the youth of tomorrow. 68 Li j 1 13 TT r The math team did well this year in the Fairfax County Inter-high Math League. That is the description of Pep Club in a nutshell, but it goes alot deeper than that. It is constantly trying to keep bulletin boards and posters up to date. It is frustrating that banners won’t stay up. It is trying to come up with new and exciting ideas to get the students involved with their school. It is having crazy activities like ballon walls, hairy leg contests, coat checks, endless bake sales and car washes. It is putting on a Homecoming for basketball. It is the members working hard, giving a lot of time and effort. It is the officers working during and after meetings to make the club a success. It is Diann Uminski, president; Mary Eitel, vice president; Wendy Beitel, vice president; Lynn McKenzie, treasurer; and Dianne Sharp, secretary. It is the heart-breaking job of trying to raise spirit at a school that seems to hate the word. It is hoping that next year the club will do better and the student body will realize that spirit is not an unheard of word. The sponsors are Mr. Angle, Miss Swinson, Mrs. Zablotney, Miss Barkey, and Miss Lohse. Pep Club 72 Quill Scroll Quill Scroll is a national honorary society for high school journalists. The members demonstrate responsibility through the safe handling of firearms. The Rifle Club not only builds marks¬ manship, but also discipline, character and sportsmanship. There are two ways to achieve success in the Rifle Club. You can obtain personal satisfaction by qualifying for NRA marksmanship awards and you can participate with others as a member of a five man team in interscholastic competition. Riflery is a growing sport. In 1965, there were six rifle teams in our area league. Today there are twelve. This shows that in the last eight years the competitive mem¬ bers have increased twofold. We are learning that firearms have a proper place in our society, their use and abuse, reasons for their abuse and how we, as law-abiding citizens, can correct this abuse. Firearms can be a source of plea¬ sure, and to many, a thing of beauty. It is up to us, the people, to preserve them in their proper perspective. Russian Club The President of the Russian Club is Jeff Weeks. The Vice-President is Robert Rust, and the Secretary is Vicki Inge. After much debate and re-electing, the Russian Club finally got its officers and constitution. Their purpose is to promote an understanding of the people and culture of the Soviet Union . The Russian Club subscribes to newspapers and magazines that tell of the Soviet Union. As a new club, they even took part in the Joint Language Club Christmas party and presented a play in Russian. No one understood it, but they all agreed it was very nice. The club also put forth all kinds of delightful little goodies for the public to devour. However, the Russian Club is not really the Russian Club. Instead they are the Pa-russki Club which is a sloppy transliteration of the Russian word for Russian. S.C.A. If you rode a camel to school, which hump would you sit on? If you had a giraffe for a friend, would you rather slide down its neck or paint its spots purple? If you were in love with a kangaroo, how would you break the news to your parents? If you had to tell about the Scribe in 500 words or less, how would you do it? But maybe you don’t even know what the Scribe is, perhaps some French restaur¬ ant or a G.P. movie? Believe it or not, the Scribe is Herndon High School’s Literary- art magazine. The Scribe consists of one very competent sponsor (Mrs. Nancy Ny- rop), one editor (Valerie Wohlfeld), a staff (Lis Ginsberg, Janette Petty, Amelia Pat¬ ton, Howard L. Waddell III, sometimes Lucy Adams), and all contributors, to whom we are completely dependent on for all material published. At Scribe meetings all material is read and evaluated by the staff as to originality, value, and suitability. The main purpose of the Scribe is to represent the student body’s creativity, in terms of both quality and quantity. If you found a zebra in your bed one nite, what would you do? 76 Spanish Club The Spanish Club started the year by electing officers. The officers elected were Debi Miller as President, Janet Walther as Vice President, Elizabeth Wilson as Secretary, and Judy Roe as Treasurer. The Spanish Club had its first dinner in November Don Pedro’s in D. C. In December, the club participated in the Joint Language Club Christmas Party. The club presented its version of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and had a pina- ta. The Spanish Club sold doughnuts during the third nine weeks. The club plans to have another dinner in the spring. Spanish Honor Society La Sociedad Honoraria Espanol, the Spanish Honor Society, is continuing to honor worthy students of Spanish. This fall, the Society had its annual induction, presided over by Susan Se¬ nior, President; Brian Harboume, Vice President; Dave Robin¬ son, Secretary; and Mrs. Rosemary Pukal, faculty sponsor. If ail of these qualities are to be taken into consideration, this past season must be judged as one of Herndon’s best. The team showed not only these qualities, but many more. A football team cannot be measured by its win-loss record alone . . . other things can be just as important. The players receive such benefits as physical and mental discipline, responsibility, team competition, and even enjoy¬ ment. The rest of the student body, too, benefit from football, not only because of the fun of attending the games, but from the sense of school spirit attained. Herndon ended its football season with three wins, six losses, and one tie. This can be judged as a losing season, unless the other accomplishments are taken into consideration. Judging by those accomplishments, it was definately a winning season. 97 : 98 99 Junior Varsity Football J.V. One part of soccer that doesn’t come naturally is the desire to work hard. Working hard is not just practicing the sport, but running and more running to get in shape. After a player is in shape, he can then start practic¬ ing. Practicing then gets him ready to compete against other players. The Herndon Soccer Team not only showed the skills necessary to play the sport, but also the desire to work at it. The varsity team did not have the season they would have liked, but the J.V. came in first in the county. The upcoming varsity team shows great prospect. You are at the brink of exhaustion and your knees are about to give in — do you quit? No, not if you’re a cross country runner. If you were, you would keep bearing the pain until you became a winner. Not only does cross country running cause physical hardships, but it also creates the horrible feeling of being alone. All you hear are your own footsteps and heavy breathing. You think about how, if you lose, there is only one person to blame and that one person is yourself. Coming in first is not the only way to win. Winning can also be achieving physical fitness, confidence, and much more. The Herndon Cross Country Track Team put forth a lot of effort this year to make a good showing for the school. The runners may not have won all of their meets, pointwise, but they did gain self-esteem. If you believe that, go see one of the girls’ hockey games. Hockey sticks flying across shins or into a jaw. The sticks sometimes hit people more than the ball. Off the field a girl may be an angel, but put a hockey stick in her hand and you’ve created a monster. This isn’t to say that the girls on the Herndon Hockey Team are Frankensteins, because they’re not. The girls fought hard in all of their games this season and deserve a lot of credit. The team put in many tiring hours and played their games while only a small cheer¬ ing section watched. Although hockey did not draw the crowds that football did, it did reap similar benefits and excitement. Girls’ Tennis Team Nancy Manus Tennis is not just hitting a fuzzy little ball back and forth across a net. It is a game that calls for as much, if not more, stamina as any sport you can name. It is a game in which coordination is as important as strength. The players body must become one with his mind and his reflexes timed to almost perfection. Once a player finds that he has the talent, he must then find the determination to work hard and devote much time to practice. Then, after much practice, a player is ready for competition. Tennis is a sport in which individual competi¬ tion is linked closely with team competition. When a player loses his match he not only lets himself down, but also his team. Even though winning is not everything, it is still hard to accept a loss. After a period of time, the memory of the loss fades away and the player realizes the other aspects of the sport. A few of these aspects are enjoyment, coordination, development of reflexes, and many more. Tennis is said to be “the people’s sport”. The people who made a good showing in the 1972 fall season were the girls on the Herndon Tennis Team. They not only showed themselves as a team, but many players also stood out individu¬ ally. There were many young players on the team who will be back next year to provide another exciting season of tennis. The girls on the teams practiced very hard even though they did not have the benefits the boys have. A boy, if he’s good enough, can hope for a scholarship. The most a girl can hope for is a nice pat on the back. With this and many oth¬ er disappointments, the girls’ teams played hard and never gave up. Girls’ basketball does not have great popular¬ ity as of yet, but the possibility of having it in the future is strong. 131 Yorktown . HHS . RAILROAD P.O.BOX 333 HERNDON, VIRGINIA 22070 HERNDON LUMBER AND MILLWORK inc. 266 During World War II, the British discovered that younger seamen were less able to survive the ordeals of shipwreck than their older mates. The younger men, it seemed, were giving up sooner under extreme hardship. So a school was set up to teach survival techniques and build, through experi¬ ence. the tenacity necessary to withstand severe stress. That was the beginning of Outward Bound. Today there are schools all over the world with seven in the U.S. These are wilderness schools, but they teach more than merely how to survive in the wilderness. Their purpose is to help each stu¬ dent plumb the depths of his capacities by placing him in sit¬ uations where he discovers that he can accomplish far more than he dreamed possible, Further, students learn, through helping each other under stress, a new regard for each mem¬ ber of the crew and a genuine sense of teamwork. Outward Bound has courses for young men, girls, adults, co-ed courses and special seminars for management and teachers. It is non-profit, financed by private grants, contri¬ butions and tuition charges. Over half the students attend on full or partial scholarships. You don’t have to be an athlete or have any special skills to attend Outward Bound. We’ll teach you everything you need to know. If you’d like to know more about it, or you want to help someone else attend, write Outward Bound®, Inc., Reston, Virginia, or one of the schools listed below. We gave each student 6 matches, a fishhook, simie frinj and three days alone on an island. Here’s what they gave us: -Ufa + e Northwest Outward Bound School. 3200 .Judkins, Rd„ Kugene, Oregon 97403. Little do you know the struggles that went into the 1973 Hornet. What would you do if you were trapped in a dining room with 2 other crazed yearbook editors? Would you try and put out a yearbook even when you are 100 pages behind? The answer to these and other irrelevant questions is yes; if you were gullible enough to sign up on the staff in the first place. This year, the Hornet is being put out by a skinny editor, a puritanical assistant editor, weird copy writers and the world’s strangest photo editor. For balance, the yearbook has Fred Case for a sponsor. Mr. Case, as you know, is one of our local biolo¬ gy teachers and the only person on the Hornet staff who knows what he is doing. De¬ spite the wacky staff, this year’s yearbook is not bad (we like it). We’ve tried to make the yearbook a bit different this year. We’ve tried to make it more meaningful and relevant for today’s students. Hopefully we’ve succeeded. As these words are being typed on an innocent Cnderwood Five typewriter, one’s conscience is being plagued by the deeds of all those who labored to produce this monumental work. Should they not be praised too? Of course, dear reader, so bearing this in mind: this yearbook is dedicated to: Cathy Orlins: (() mighty editor) for all her hard labors Mr. Case: for all the teacher candids Linda Lincoln: for patience, understanding and putting up with John Hatchett’s wild ideas Sally Ann Reed and Howard Livingston Waddell III: for all of the weird copy The Photo Staff (wherever you are): for pictures (when you took them) The staff in general: for hard work (when and if) The business staff: for all the business John Hatchett: for all the award winning pictures, the layouts with the black lines running across them, and all the odd jobs you ended up doing (and didn ' t partic¬ ularly enjoy). By the way this year the Hornet is putting out a spring supplement. It will contain spring sports, prom, graduation, and anvthing we left out. It will be delivered in the fall.
