CLASS HISTORY The old saying, 'History repeats itself,' seems to have proved true in the case of the class of l9h6 of Hernando High. In the fall of the session of 1933-193A the little red schoolhouse on the hill had its usual gathering of pre- cocious tots to enroll in the first grade. The personnel of this group varied as time went by, but a few of the original ones made it through twelve years of school. . True to tradition, these young scholars suffered the pangs experienced by all seekers after knowledge. With some of the number these pangs were brought on by the application of the hickory limb, a much-used weapon in those days. On the other side of the picture, however, there were many bright spots in the lives of the group. One memorable ex- perience in the sixth grade was a trip to the Pink Palace and the zoo in Memphis. Tall tales are still being told of things that happened on that excursion. In grammar school the class was enlivened from time to time by the addition of other members, some of whom proved to be permanent. The high school days of the class of '46 established the fact that this was indeed an outstanding class. The girls made their mark by contributing musical talent, pulch- ritude, and' intellect. The boys, on the whole, won fame through their prowess on the athletic field. The class par- ticipated in an unusually large number of school activities but at the same time managed to maintain a reputation for shining in the social world. Billy Flinn showed remarkable wisdom by coming from Olive Branch in his junior year to join the class. As is customary with most classes, the class of l9b6 reached the climax of its career when it finally became the senior class of the Hernando High School. In the summer of l9L5 the little red schoolhouse had undergone such a renova- tion that it was hardly recognizable when school opened in September. A new member was added to the class in the person of Paul Allison from Lewisburg. The football team won the district championship. The class sponsored the new school paper, The Teen Times. A number of the class were on the staff of the Wildcat, the first annual in the history of the school. The usual amount of excitement prevailed over.the senior play, the senior parties, and graduation. The night of May-25 brought with it the closing exercises and the last official gathering of the class of l9b6. When all was over, each member, as he went out of the building with diploma in hand, cast one last, lingering look at the little red schoolhouse. One important chapter in his life's history had been completed and beyond that lay blank pages waiting to be filled. 12
