In the fall of the session of 1933-193A the little red schoolhouse on the hill had its usual gathering of pre- cocious tots to enroll in the first grade. The personnel of this group varied as time went by, but a few of the original ones made it through twelve years of school. . True to tradition, these young scholars suffered the pangs experienced by all seekers after knowledge. With some of the number these pangs were brought on by the application of the hickory limb, a much-used weapon in those days. On the other side of the picture, however, there were many bright spots in the lives of the group. One memorable ex- perience in the sixth grade was a trip to the Pink Palace and the zoo in Memphis. Tall tales are still being told of things that happened on that excursion. In grammar school the class was enlivened from time to time by the addition of other members, some of whom proved to be permanent. The high school days of the class of '46 established the fact that this was indeed an outstanding class. The girls made their mark by contributing musical talent, pulch- ritude, and' intellect. The boys, on the whole, won fame through their prowess on the athletic field. The class par- ticipated in an unusually large number of school activities but at the same time managed to maintain a reputation for shining in the social world. Billy Flinn showed remarkable wisdom by coming from Olive Branch in his junior year to join the class. As is customary with most classes, the class of l9b6 reached the climax of its career when it finally became the senior class of the Hernando High School. In the summer of l9L5 the little red schoolhouse had undergone such a renova- tion that it was hardly recognizable when school opened in September. A new member was added to the class in the person of Paul Allison from Lewisburg. The football team won the district championship. The class sponsored the new school paper, The Teen Times. A number of the class were on the staff of the Wildcat, the first annual in the history of the school. The usual amount of excitement prevailed over.the senior play, the senior parties, and graduation. The night of May-25 brought with it the closing exercises and the last official gathering of the class of l9b6. When all was over, each member, as he went out of the building with diploma in hand, cast one last, lingering look at the little red schoolhouse. One important chapter in his life's history had been completed and beyond that lay blank pages waiting to be filled. 12 -,U,A,a.r- .W 4 if ' rw 1 fy - I 5' mf f gu fx , 1 H 15.4 ,M . .f-aK.,fIg ...X .- ! 1 x MX, TT YWSV9 IVi1k1lN 'Y xi'f'f5v- mhwwv- I fr ,Lk, at 3 - Ethel Brewer Barbara Crawford Jennie Lee Davidson C . As we think over some of the good things that came from it, we place high among them the school spirit that was aroused. We think of the cooperation that it brought about between the patrons and the school and of the loyalty that our supporters displayed. As for the foot- ball players themselves, it should have been of great va- lue to them, not only from the standpoint of physical training, but also from the fact that it provided oppor- tunities for learning and prac- ticing good sportsmanship. This last statement brings us to the point of our editorial. Good sportsmanship may take place in athletics or in any other kind of activity where competition is involved. Life is made up of thousands of sit- uations where sportsmanship and fairplay are significant. All the students of the Hernando High School would do well to remember that every day we have oppor- tunities to display good sports- manship. Each person should ask himself: Am I a good sportsman? How do I play the game? In my work, as well as in my play, am I generous, fair, and honorable? Remember: WWhen the great Scorer comes To write against your name, He writes not that you won or lost But how you played the game.' TI CHANGES IN FACULTY We regret to lose Mrs. Mar- garet Telford, our fourth grade teacher, and Mrs. J. S. Mills, our Mathematics teacher, from our faculty. They are leaving to join their husbands, who have just returned from overseas. Our best wishes go with them. We welcome to our faculty Mrs. C. H. Myers, who will take Mrs. Telford's place and Mrs. Paul Brown, who will teach Math- ematics. Mrs. Myers, was for a number of years a member of the grammar school faculty at Corinth, Mississippi. Mrs. Brown, before her marriage several years ago taught in the Hernando High School. NEW CURTAIN FOR STAGE Mr. C. H. Myers has contract- ed with Mr. John Lobdell of Rose- dale, Mississippi for a new cur- tain to be used on the stage of the Hernando High School auditor- ium. The money for the curtain will be obtained from various ac- tivities in which all grades of the school will participate. HERNANDO WINS CHAM IONSHIP The l9b5 football season was one of the brightest in Hernando football history. Guided by Coach Macie Chambers, the Hernando Wild- cats won eight games and lost one during the regular season. The 25 ES Wildcats won the Northwest Region Championship and were unscored on by conference teams. At the close the season Hernando was invited participate in a Lions' Bowl at Kosciusko, Mississippi and was defeated by the Philadelphia Panthers. Football facilities were greatly improved at Hernando High this year by the addition of lights to the playing field. With the advent of night foot- ball, record crowds witnessed the home games of the 'L5 sea- son. Enthusiasm reached an all- time high, and the loyal support of the fans was greatly appre- ciated by the team. The most cherished victories of the team came with the defeats of Oxford, Olive Branch, and Tun- ica, all three ancient rivals of the Wildcats.
