MAINE SCHOLARS’ DAY Chris Bamford Terza Simon Maine Scholars' Day is when 500 talented high school juniors from around Maine get together to expe- rience college life. They are given a test in which ten students may win a free tu- ition to UMAINE. Hermon has had one scholarship winner. The students are selected by their PSAT exams, rank- ing in class, classes that they took, and their cumulative averages. The students ex- perience life in a dorm while taking real college classes. They make many friends and learn a lot from this valuable experience. |eff Meiczinger Michael Caboury DIRIGO GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ STATE 28 Stacy White Picture Not Available ■v l • Tammy Chris Douglass Bamford Girls’ and Boys' State is a large role-playing simulation game in wnicn a state is cre- ated. Actually it is a state of mind, where 500 high school seniors-to-be, throughout the state, learn about state and lo- cal government. With help from elected and appointed officials (Governor, Speaker of the House, and Area Town Managers) instruction is giv- en and hopefully learned re- garding our democratic polit- ical process. Running for office, via pe- tition papers, making a ballot, going through a mock town warrant with an area town manager are just a few of the things to be learned. These two programs pro- vide an excellent opportunity to become involved, fight ap- athv. learn by doing, live on a college campus with a room- mate, and meet leaders of to- morrow. |eff Meiczinger Karl Drake Michael Gabon ry
