HERMO CARMEl r EEVAAT GEEABURA _________________ =3 We. the class of nineteen eighty-eight, fondly dedicate our yearbook to two men who have greatly influenced our lives: Mr. Paul Murphy and Mr. Russell Clukey. Mr. Paul E. Murphy. Director of Guidance and Good Friend, was brought up in Old Town, where he attended St. Josephs School. He later graduated from John Bapst. He received his B.S. in Education from UMO in 1966 and his M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling in 1967. Mr. Murphy had a number of outstanding jobs to his credit with the most familiar being from 1967-72 as a youth counselor for the State of Maine Employment Security Commission. From 67-70, he did his first tour of duty at Hermon High School as a social studies teacher and department head. From '78 until the present. Mr. Murphy has been Boys’ State Director. During this time. Mr. Murphy was teaching in the Bangor System. He returned to Hermon in '83 as the Director of Guidance and Counseling. He directed the chess club to five successful seasons and had the energy to teach a class at the Bangor Adult Education Center. Mr. Murphy had past political involvement as a member of the Human Rights Commission, a member of the Representative Assembly and a voting member of the Democratic State Convention. He has been a long-standing Boy Scout Counselor. On a more personal side. Mr. Murphy has a wide variety of hobbies including fishing, hunting, scoring the Hermon ball games, and officiating the junior high softbalTprogram. collecting items at the local dumps, continually improving upon his intellect and wit. while being incapable of throwing out even a single piece of paper. Through this dedication, we would like to express our admiration of Mr. Murphy and our gratitude for all his inspiration and support. Mr. Russell Clukey was the kind of principal that the students and faculty alike could calf a friend. He was always willing to lend a shoulder to lean on. to help carry the heavy loads, to give advice, and to always do these tasks with a sincere wisdom that could not be doubted. To his students and co-workers. Mr. Clukey was always available for sharing joy. We thank you. Mr. Russell Clukey, for sympathizing and even empathizing with us all — no matter the situation. We appreciate your dedication to us more than you could ever know. 3 SCHOOL BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT Row 1: Mrs. P. Johnson. Mrs. C. King. Mrs. P. Kimball. Mrs. S. Andrei. Row 2: Mr. T. They are given a test in which ten students may win a free tu- ition to UMAINE. Hermon has had one scholarship winner. The students are selected by their PSAT exams, rank- ing in class, classes that they took, and their cumulative averages. The students ex- perience life in a dorm while taking real college classes. They make many friends and learn a lot from this valuable experience. |eff Meiczinger Michael Caboury DIRIGO GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ STATE 28 Stacy White Picture Not Available ■v l • Tammy Chris Douglass Bamford Girls’ and Boys' State is a large role-playing simulation game in wnicn a state is cre- ated. Actually it is a state of mind, where 500 high school seniors-to-be, throughout the state, learn about state and lo- cal government. With help from elected and appointed officials (Governor, Speaker of the House, and Area Town Managers) instruction is giv- en and hopefully learned re- garding our democratic polit- ical process. Running for office, via pe- tition papers, making a ballot, going through a mock town warrant with an area town manager are just a few of the things to be learned. These two programs pro- vide an excellent opportunity to become involved, fight ap- athv. learn by doing, live on a college campus with a room- mate, and meet leaders of to- morrow. |eff Meiczinger Karl Drake Michael Gabon ry JUNIOR PRIZE SPEAKING First Row: Mrs. Stewart. International Fellowship, Inc. is an exchange student program working with Junior and Senior High Schools throughout the United States and Canada in an effort to promote a two-way exchange of teenage “ambassadors” between our countries and other countries of the world. They represent their country and enter into the lives of the people by becoming a part of a family unit. Headquarters is located in Buffalo, New York, and employs administrative, placement, records, foreign and transportation personnel ready to serve. The program is not funded by grants or donations from any political, industrial, or religious groups, but operates on a budget determined by the income generated from the program costs. 32 C. She and her aide, Robin Hunt, can be found in all parts of the school — from stamping books in the library to teasing Mr. Clukey in the office. Katie is a victim of a drunk driving accident which happened when she was only 10 years old. After being in a coma for nearly a year, Katie decided she wanted to live, and has been progressing ever since! Although doctors claimed she would never speak, Katie proved them wrong when she did start to speak in February. No one knows what Katie’s next accomplishment will be — but you can bet she’s not finished yet! Thank you, Katie for bringing joy and love into our school. Mrs. Hunt 49 I iy v' r •« •- . The all-female staff produced four issues between the months of September 1987 and June 1988, not to mention persevering despite a lack of finance and a change of editors. We give our congratulations to the HAWK staff: Kathy Whitmore (junior), Rebecca Gallagher (junior), Laura Roberts (junior), and the Editor, Deanna Partridge (sophomore). Special thanks to Oriel Badger and Mrs. Phyllis Worthley for getting the fledging HAWK into flight! HAWK CHESS TEAM 56 Row 1: O. Badger, j. Meiczinger, S. Mahon, J. Plourde, W. Stevens. Row 2: S. GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL Special congratulations go out to Michelle Cole for scoring over 1000 points in her school- girl career. Michelle accomplished this feat first playing for Bangor Christian High School then rounding out her basketball career at Hermon High School. 83 TOURNEY! After finishing in the number one spot in East- ern Maine, the Hawks, under the leadership of Coach Blood, defeated Belfast in the first round of the Tournament, then were defeated by the Eagles of Ellsworth in the semi-final round. 84 After finishing in the number three spot in East- ern Maine, our girls squared off against the number six MCI Huskies. Our girls held off the Huskies, then pulled the tourney upset by beating the Red Riots of Orono in overtime. Though our girls were defeated in the finals by Houlton, we salute them for a terrific season. CONSTITUTION RAP We’re free to pray every day to any God that comes our way; we can speak our minds anytime on radio or on prime time; “People's Court” is our favorite show; we can watch Judge Wapner let them go; you can carry a gun to protect yourself but you can’t use one on someone else — if you do and you’re put in jail, you have the right to a fair bail — then the people in the jury will get it over in a hurry — so if you’re purple, green, or blue the Constitution protects you. — AP English Class BJVl During period 2 on September 17, students filed into the gym for the Constitution Day Assembly. Oral presentations celebrated the spirit of the times. Students receive a cupcake — a symbolic part of the huge star-spangled cake. U.S. History classes for periods 2 and 4 prepare THE CONSTITU- TION CHRONICAL. Stacy White plays a piccolo solo during a Sousa march. Many faculty members wear costumes of the times.
