1 987 MICROPHONE Hermon High School Hermon, Maine l Dedication Vir 5, flo a 11 May I have your attention please! Mrs. Mona Small went to work as the school secretary in December of 1966, when she was hired by Principal Harold Brown. Since that time she has worked as the secretary for three more principals. Over the years she has seen her three sons and a granddaughter graduate from Hermon High School, and is herself a Hermon High School graduate. All three of her children have become teachers, two of whom are presently employed at Hermon High. As you can see, Mona has close ties not only to this school, but to the Town of Hermon as well. Therefore, the Class of 1987 wishes to dedicate the 1987 Microphone to Mrs. Mona Small in ap- preciation of all that she has done for Her- mon High over the years. MAINE SCHOLARS Every May the students from the Junior Class are selected on the basis of their grade point average and PSAT scores to attend the annual Maine Scholars Days at the University of Maine. There the students stay in dormitories and attend short lectures presented by university professors on subjects such as chemistry, history, and forestry. Over 500 students from all over Maine are selected for this honor. All students there take a test and twelve scholarships are awarded based on the test score results. The students also tour the Maine campus and attend dances, movies, etc. This yearâs students selected from Hermon were (pictured at right) Dolly Smith, Flete Newby, and Stephanie Smith. 32 F R E S Row One: M. We were ex- tremely successful! in our advertisement sales this year. This shows a lot of community support for the book as well as a great effort on the part of a dedicated few. Although we did lack staff, due to circumstances beyond our control, the yearbook was turned out all the same. This would not have been possible without the in- valuable assistance of my co-editor and business manager. Thank you for your support. DJK Even though itâs now winter, I can easily envi- sion the mass confusion at the beginning of the summer when the book arrives. I realize that everybody might not like everything in the yearbook. I humbly apologize for that. When two people design 104 pages of a 104 page year- book, they can get slightly burned out. I hope that next year, though, more students will care enough to add their personal touch to the Microphone before it comes out. I would like to thank everyone that dedicated a lot of time and energy into the 1987 yearbook. Thanks, Dave-I must say you certainly are a decent fellow. FRENCH CLUB Most Hermon students think of the French Club as the people selling donuts every Tuesday and Friday morning. That money went to fund an annual trip to Quebec City this spring. The French Club has also put on a fon- du party, went Christmas Caroling at some nursing homes, made a French Cafe for the teachers, and held a total immersion weekend where students attempted to communicate only in French. 46 SPANISH CLUB Front Row: M. The Spanish Club is much like the French Club in that all members must currently be taking the language of the Club. This year, the Spanish Club hosted a one day total immer- sion, planning Spanish activities and cooking a Spanish meal. They also sold lollipops, went Christmas caroling in Spanish, and put together some traditional Spanish Pinatas. M. Bennage (Secretary-Treasurer), T. Hargreaves (Vice-President), C. KEY CLUB The Key Club is an international organization of over 100,000 high school students. Though dedicated to service, the Key Club has fun too. Some of this year's projects have included a Hunterâs Breakfast, a Thanksgiving dinner for the elderly residents of an apartment complex, the ring- ing of the Salvation Army bell, bake sales, pizza par- ties, and the sponsoring of a fashion show to raise money for the Kiwanians Pediatric Trauma Center. In April, the newly elected officers and members that worked the hardest attended the New England District Convention with over 1,000 other New England Key Clubbers. It ran a very successful Winter Carnival with many different and interesting activities, such as the annual tug-o-war and a swimming excursion at the University of Maine pool. The student council also sponsored a Sweetheart Prom held on Valentines Day, the first ever held. It was the most successful prom in recent memory. An ice skating trip to the Alfond Arena was organized in early March. The students werenât the only ones who benefited from student council activities this year. The teachers were given Teacher Appreciation Days which included a breakfast treated by the student council. The entire staff and falculty were invited to join in the feast. The 1985-86 baseball season was a disappointing one as far as wins and losses are concerned. The outlook for next year is promising because many underclassmen received valuable varsity playing time. 66 SOFTBALL 1986 The 1986 Varaity Softball Team had a record of twelve wins and four losses. The Lady Hawks went to the quarter-finals and beat MCI five to three. Unfortunately, the Lady Hawks lost to Bucksport seven to six in the semi-finals. The Golden Bucks went on to capture the State Championship. You can see in the picture to the right that the pressure is really on Carol Bamford during the quarter- finals against MCI. The familiar stance of Coach Collins in the pic- ture above signifies the importance of the game. During the season the team started some new things, like sports psyching, with Penny Cardello, and the team got their chance to follow a drawn up diet plan. All of these added materials helped the team make it to the tournament. There they went and battled with MCI. The game was extended to four over- times, where the Hawks showed that their spirit and tough work all season were paying off. Unfor- tunatly, MCI ended the Hawks season of 6 wins, 2 losses, and 4 ties when they scored the winning goal. We all are excited for next year, when the Junior Varsity team will have a year under their belt. This team attributes 23 players who either won or tied all of their games except two. This yearâs team was lead by Sophomore runner Clint Gordon. He ran extremely well this year yet due to an off race Cordan didnât qualify for the states. During the season he beat runners that went on the compete in the state meet. Another good and consistent runner, David Hayward, ran well also. His times came very close to those of Gordanâs. Before Eric Nute moved up to varsity, he appeared in the Maine Running Magazine as a leader in J.V. running. This spunky girls team was the best team that Mr. Mulvey has had since heâs coached at Hermon High. Throughout the season each and every runner set goals and worked hard to attain them. The girls did extremely well in the Penobscot Valley Championships, but the big race was the Eastern Maine Regionals which would determine which teams would com- pete for the state crown. In order for a team to qualify for the states, it must be in the top six. Well ... The Lady Hawks score for the Regional meet was exactly the same as that of Medomak Valley. They were tied for sixth place. It ended up that our sixth place runner, Shannon Newcomb, had beaten Medomak's sixth place runner. This allowed them to compete in the state meet. There the girls placed eighth as a team. In the state meet Cathy York, who finished in the top five in the P.V.C.âs and the top three in the regional meet, finished tenth. She was also a member of the All State team. Her pic- ture and an article appeared in Main Running Magazine. Another very talend runner, Michelle Annis, in her second year, placed 52 in the state. 71 Row One: A. Davis, S. McLaughlin, E. Higgins. M. Hawes, C. Kimball, J. Campbell, T. Dunning. D. Emerson, M. The Girls Varsity Basktball team had a very exceptional year. The team was very young and inexperienced in Varsity ball, but their talent and sheer determination overcame this. The girls won more games than was expected. After ending their season with a 9-9 records, the ball club went on to compete in the Class âBâ tournaments. They entered sixth seeded while the opposing team went in third seeded. The competition was very close and either team could have won. Though both teams were very determined, Medomak Valley came up with the win with the score of 45-41. The lady Hawks were led by senior cap- tain Stephanie Smith and senior Sue Seymour, junior Michelle Cole, sophomores Heather Cantwell and Wendy Blackwell, and freshman Sharon Rines.
