Escape From Algebra This is bizarre. Here I am in this classroom feeling totally isolated. I am bored. I don’t like being bored. Being bored makes me nervous. Very nervous indeed. The walls. Are they moving? Nol Get a grip on yourself. But they’re moving. I swear it. They’re moving in closer, constricting me. I’ve got to get out. I eye the door. No. impossible. I'd be gunned down before I could work the security bolts. Windows? Barred. Anyway, it’s a 500-foot drop onto the rocks. Thinkl Tunnel — Locigal. I slowly slip down in my seat and peel Up the tiles. Yes. it’s possible. I dig. Using my fingernails, teeth, and a short pencil I dig a hole. It gets deeper, longer. Have I cleared the classroom yet? Probably. I dig up. Wowl I’m in the hall. I made it. I jump out. I run ... Past the office . Nol I’ve been spottedl Remain calm! I walk casually by. Suddenly a secretary wearing a military Uniform and carrying a machine gun Stops me. Do I have a pass? My mind is racing. How should 1 answer? No. I don't. She quickly inserts a clip. I run. Machine gunfire racking my ears. Painl Immense Pain. Bullets tearing through my flesh I crawl, sliding my blood soaked body Across the cold tiles. I reach for the doors leading outside. And then Oh, Nol The bell rings Trampled to death by hungry students And Voc. Ed. Just another bloody lump for George to clean up. An unsuccessful attempt to Escape From Algebra.” 4 Keith Cousins 85”

DEDICATION Behind every successful organization there is usu- ally a person or persons who unselfishly give their time and effort to make that organization a stronger one. The Class of 1982 would like to commend Mr. Col- lins and Mrs. Abbott for giving up their time and giving to us their spirit and support in order to bring the Class of 1982 together . We thank you for your dedication and support, but most of all for being our friends. The spirit of togetherness has contributed to the success of the Class of 1982. Every class that graduates from Hermon starts out as individuals and develops into a unified group. This year's senior class, in particular, has had a rough time. Our freshman year we came in as strangers just like every other class. Our sophomore year showed few accomplishments, leaving us with little enthusiasm. Our junior year with Mr. Carrigan, we began to pull ourselves together and won the winter carnival. The beginning of our senior year brought us the closeness that we needed to carry us through. With the help of Mr. Collins and Mrs. Abbott, the rest fell into place. The bonds between us strengthened as we dominated our school through victory after victory. If it weren’t for our class togetherness, we would not be the winners that we are now. 3
