The. icrophone. ft non ?u - DEDICATION Behind every successful organization there is usu- ally a person or persons who unselfishly give their time and effort to make that organization a stronger one. The Class of 1982 would like to commend Mr. Col- lins and Mrs. Abbott for giving up their time and giving to us their spirit and support in order to bring the Class of 1982 together . We thank you for your dedication and support, but most of all for being our friends. The spirit of togetherness has contributed to the success of the Class of 1982. Every class that graduates from Hermon starts out as individuals and develops into a unified group. This year's senior class, in particular, has had a rough time. Our freshman year we came in as strangers just like every other class. Our sophomore year showed few accomplishments, leaving us with little enthusiasm. Our junior year with Mr. Carrigan, we began to pull ourselves together and won the winter carnival. The beginning of our senior year brought us the closeness that we needed to carry us through. With the help of Mr. Collins and Mrs. Abbott, the rest fell into place. The bonds between us strengthened as we dominated our school through victory after victory. If it weren’t for our class togetherness, we would not be the winners that we are now. 3 Escape From Algebra This is bizarre. Here I am in this classroom feeling totally isolated. I am bored. I don’t like being bored. Being bored makes me nervous. Very nervous indeed. The walls. Are they moving? Nol Get a grip on yourself. But they’re moving. I swear it. They’re moving in closer, constricting me. I’ve got to get out. I eye the door. No. impossible. I'd be gunned down before I could work the security bolts. Windows? Barred. Anyway, it’s a 500-foot drop onto the rocks. Thinkl Tunnel — Locigal. I slowly slip down in my seat and peel Up the tiles. Yes. it’s possible. I dig. Using my fingernails, teeth, and a short pencil I dig a hole. It gets deeper, longer. Have I cleared the classroom yet? Probably. I dig up. Wowl I’m in the hall. I made it. I jump out. I run ... Past the office . Nol I’ve been spottedl Remain calm! I walk casually by. Suddenly a secretary wearing a military Uniform and carrying a machine gun Stops me. Do I have a pass? My mind is racing. How should 1 answer? No. I don't. She quickly inserts a clip. I run. Machine gunfire racking my ears. Painl Immense Pain. Bullets tearing through my flesh I crawl, sliding my blood soaked body Across the cold tiles. I reach for the doors leading outside. And then Oh, Nol The bell rings Trampled to death by hungry students And Voc. Ed. Just another bloody lump for George to clean up. An unsuccessful attempt to Escape From Algebra.” 4 Keith Cousins 85” CflRyoLft BUS DRIVERS Row I: R. Hill. E. Alexander. A. Jones. Row 1 M. Spencer. J. Overlook. C. Bishop. M. Fitz. E. Conant. C. Three identical and two fraternal, these twins make this year’s seniors distinctly different. Whether it was fate, a remarkable coincidence, or mere good fortune that brought them together, the graduating Class of 1982 is proud of their oddity and proud to be unique. 31 WINTER CARNIVAL 1980 - 1981 Norn Higgins. During this one week in Feb- ruary. school spirit and class togetherness really comes through. The day events include such things as checkers, arm wrestling, pie eating, and tug-of-war. After school the events include roller skating, swim- ming, sliding, and sports night. And last, but far from least, is the Winter Carnival Prom. This prom is formal, and a good time is had by all. The class competition and participation is tre- mendous during this special time of the school year. Leaving Off 1 heard you that terrible night Begging her to help you. You said it would make things right. But she and 1 both knew. We knew the pain you were in — But couldn’t ease your fears. Because you asked us to commit a sin. Down your face came a lonely tear. 1 really try to understand — But why do you want to go? 1 comfort you by holding your hand And try not to let my fears show. You say you want to touch the sky. But Dad, why do you want to die? Anonymous Obsession 1 saw the innocence on your face, content- ment in your eyes. 1 watched you walk with silent grace, under midnight skies. 1 saw the breeze move your hair, as you tilted your head to the sky. 1 wanted to sit beside you there, but instead, 1 started to cry. Sunsets passed, you left the beach, and faded into the night. You, my arms could not reach, and 1 was stricken with sudden fright. 1 ran to the spot where you had been and dropped to my knees. The tears stung my face again ... 1 stared out at the sea. 1 could never explain or give expression, how tightly 1 was gripped with such obses- sion. McGown. Row 2-. H. Jenkins. P. Wellington. J. Burke. M. Smith. J. Burke. Attending Girls' State were Sue Bishop. Beth Dolley. Suzanne Pratt. B.J. Clement, and Kristi McGown. In Dirigo Girls’ State everyone learned the fundamentals of government. Delegates learned election tactics and responsibility of of- fices. They were allowed to run for town and state offices of their choice. After elections the House of Representatives and Senate were set up and some issues were voted on. Dirigo Girls' State received many honored guests. Representative Bill Cohen. Governor Brennan, and some senators spoke on various political topics. At the end of the week a campaign was run for governor and Bridget Coughlin of Bangor won the election. The 1981 Dirigo Boys’ State was held at the University of Maine at Orono in June. Five dele- gates were selected to attend: Rob Crockett. Brian Graves. Dean Higgins. Steve Pickard and Bill Pulver. Delegates participated in regular town meet- ings. party caucuses, a primary election and a state wide” Dirigo Election, culminating in the election of Federalist Brian Hall of Bangor. All the Hermon delegates ran for public office, with Brian being elected to the State Senate and Bill elected Town Sheriff. Brian was also appoint- ed District Court Judge by Governor Hall (his roommate!). 71 D. Higgins. B. Pulver. B. Graves. R. Crockett. S. Pickard. KEY CLUB Row || A. Johnston. E. Johnston (Pres.). M.
