The team romped through the football and basketball seasons and will probably do the same in the volleyball and softball seasons. The team has the tremen- dous support of the seniors, led by Mr. Winn. This year the senior girls decided to have an official class game team similar to the boys' team. It was decided unanimously to name the team after Mr. Winn; WINN'S WILD WOMEN. The seniors started off big by winning the field hockey championship, going undefeated. At this time WINN'S WILD WOMEN are undefeated and both teams plan to regroup for volleyball, the last intramural sport. WINN'S WILD WOMEN TOP ROW: B. Frost, D. Harris, G. After a week of nerve-wracking suspense, you find you've made it to the second tryout. The next morning, you find your name on the list of speakers and you have your first nervous breakdown. There are more to come! The next step on the ladder to stardom is a frustrating month of practice. Aside from getting extremely bored by saying the same thing over and over, there are lots of weird little hang-ups you have to get rid of. For example, if you don't get enough expression in your voice, you sing Happy Birthday and cry at the same time. D. Mason Finally the big day comes! After a rotten rehearsal and no sleep the night before, you're waiting for the next nervous collapse. Then—you're on! Somehow you blunder through and stumble back to your seat. Oh! the re- lief! It's time now for your final nervous breakdown, but, for some reason, you never have it—the whole thing has been too much fun. D. Harris N. Bragg 69 J. Hawes S. As time passed on you moved along and have come out squeeky clean. Your love that you give me is like a car just coming out of the wash. Every other girl I've ever known had splotches on their); you're as clear as the windshield of my newly washed Plymouth. Your voice is as soft as the hum of my tires on pavement. Your eyes sparkle like my headlights in the evening dusk. You make my world turn like my fanbelt turns. Would you please wear my safety belt? Bill Booth '74 Ow! My poor backbone. I just hit another jagged win- dow sill. Boy, let me tell you, the life of a school book is no calm float down a lazy river--it's more like a toboggan ride down an extremely bumpy slope! It all started back in '67, when I came shiny new from the presses. It didn't take long for the shine to wear off. I've been everywhere from the bottom of the wastebasket to the highest shelf in the school. It's a good thing I don't have heightrophobia! By the end of a quarter. I've swollen twice my normal size from tests and homework papers. I've been kicked around at the bottom of a grimy locker all year because some- one couldn't find me. It gets lonely down there, with no one to talk to, no fights to see, no school secrets to hear, and no one's dinner getting squashed all over me. It wasn't always like this. When I first came off the presses, I was so proud and cocky, I thought I would revolutionize education. Kids would slurp up the knowledge from me, and always be impatient for more. In reality, there is only one out of twenty stu- dents who even open my cover, and one out of fifty who wants to! Sigh. So much for grand dreams. Oops! Here comes the horde for a new year. Wonder where I'll end up this time... Sherrie Pickard '74 72 MY WOODS L ove has left. 0 ften N o one seems to care. E verything L i ving seems to 1 gnore you. In time N othing E Ise matters. LeeAnn White '76 Sun warming my skin Wind messing my hair Brook cold and sharp rush past my feet Birds filling my ears with song. Deer quiet and soothe my nerves Squirrels give me all the gossip Pines give me their sweet smell Do you wonder why I love my woods, now? A CHAPTER FROM MY LIFE It all began with one phone call. A call that was to shatter my whole life. I was very near to tears, but I managed to hold them back. When the day came we got silently into the car. The drive there seemed end- less, although it was just a few miles away. We parked the car and from there I was on my own. I opened the door and got out slowly. As I went down the cement walk, the trees seemed to crowd in upon me. Every nerve and fiber in my body became tense. But I walked on. And then finally, there it was. Standing so high and proud in front of me. I froze. But then I thought, may- be things will be better when it's over. So I walked up the steps, and I went through the door with the sign that said. Dr. Bastey, Dentist. Connie White '75 LONELY I get so lonely that the sun can't dry my tears nor do the birds' songs sound sweet. I get so lonely that all the little sounds are like a lion's roar. I get so lonely— wonder where all my laughter has gone... dawn apri I '74 73 OBSERVATIONS FROM CRIB NO. 12 Well, here I am World! All seven pounds and two ounces of me. It's going to be fun growing up--I can tell. This sure is a funny looking place—all white and funny smelling. And the people running around! They're all wearing napkins over their mouths. You don't suppose they're bank robbers, do you? Oh, dear! Gee, look at that great big hole in the wall. There's a whole bunch of men looking in and making faces at us. They look as if they had seen a hundred dollar bill on the sidewalk and just as they went to pick it up, the wind blew it down a sewer drain! What a bunch of weirdos! Maybe they let the psychiatric patients out for a while. Hey, here comes a new arrival, bawling his head off. Pipe down, you little brat! Can't you let your elders have any peace? After all, we've been here 3 hours already and you have just gotten here. You'll learn. I'm hungry. What happened to all the nurses? First they're cooing all over you like you're the first kid they ever saw; then they up and desert you. HEY, IT'S FEEDING TIME!!! No answer. They all must be off shooting pool somewhere. Ah, here comes a nurse and it's about time, too. I was beginning to worry. OK, sweetie, I'll have a steak — medium-rare--mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, biscuits, and for dessert, apple pie a la mode. What's this? A bottle? MILK?!?! You expect me to drink milk and nothing else?! Haven't you heard about the needs of a growing child? (Sigh) Grown-ups never listen... Blah! Funny tasting mi Ik...they must have spiked it. Aiding to the delinquency of a minor. Disgusting. Oh, ohj Here comes old Prune Face, the head nurse. I'll bet she's the one they use on those commercials about sourpusses with irregularities. She always has that funny look on her face. Hey, she's stopping at my crib..She's picking me up! Where am I going? Why are you stopping here in front of that big hole in the wall? I don't want to look at those weirdos! What's that you say? My Daddy? Where? HIM?!?! That guy who looks like he's been on an eight-day binge? My father? Well...it's possible. He DOES have my ir- resistibly cute nose, and my sparkling bright blue eyes. Yeah, I guess that's him all right. Hiya, Dad. Well, so it's finally time to go. Rats, just as I was getting used to the old place, too. Well, maybe I'll be back someday. I hope so...I'd sure like to know what they put in that milk, 'specially after that new kid tap danced his way down the hall after drinking two bottles of the stuff.
